The Birthday Betrayal / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Wheel

Marcus didn’t answer.

The photograph trembled in Evelyn’s hand.

A single question had changed everything.

Who was driving?

Not what happened.

Not why they were there.

Not who was responsible.

Who was behind the wheel when her father died?

The garden, once filled with birthday music and laughter, now felt like a place where every shadow carried a secret.

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

For twenty years, she had believed she knew the story.

A rainy night.

A terrible crash.

A tragic loss.

But now she understood something.

The story she had been given was incomplete.

And incomplete stories were often the most dangerous kind.

“Marcus.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Answer me.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

His hands shook slightly.

Brielle looked at him.

“Dad.””

He didn’t respond.

“Dad, tell her.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I was driving.””

The words landed heavily.

Evelyn felt the world shift.

“You?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence afterward was worse than shouting.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You told me my father was a passenger.””

“He was.””

“And Claudia?””

“She was in the front seat.””

Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Then why does this picture say otherwise?””

Marcus looked at the image.

“I don’t know.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You do.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked around the garden.

At the guests.

At Nathan.

At Brielle.

Then back at Evelyn.

“Not here.””

Evelyn almost smiled.

The old instinct.

The old request.

Move somewhere private.

Hide the truth behind closed doors.

But this time she refused.

“No.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“Evelyn.””

“You spent twenty years deciding what I could handle.””

She stepped closer.

“Today, I decide.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus lowered his head.

Finally, he said:

“I was driving because your father asked me to.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he was injured.””

Her expression changed.

“Injured?””

Marcus nodded.

“He had been attacked.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Attacked by who?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“The same person who was stealing from his company.””

Evelyn looked at Nathan.

“Did you know this?””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“Your father called me that night.””

“Why you?””

“Because he trusted me.””

Evelyn looked away.

The irony was painful.

Her father trusted Marcus.

Marcus kept secrets from her.

And somehow, both men had convinced themselves they were protecting her.

“What happened when you arrived?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“I found your father outside the building.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“Was Claudia there?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn waited.

“And?””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Claudia was hurt.””

Brielle covered her mouth.

“She never told me that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“She didn’t have the chance.””

Evelyn felt a wave of sadness pass through her.

Despite everything, she still remembered little Brielle.

A child losing her mother.

A child who deserved answers too.

“What happened next?””

Marcus stared at the ground.

“We drove away.””

“From where?””

“Your father’s office.””

“Why?””

“Because he said we couldn’t trust anyone.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Not even the police?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not until we knew who was involved.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It didn’t to me either.””

He paused.

“But your father showed me something.””

“What?””

“A list.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“A list of names?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who was on it?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

“People who had access to the company’s finances.””

Evelyn waited.

“Names, Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“Your uncle.””

Her stomach tightened.

Again.

But this time, the name didn’t feel impossible.

It felt like another piece falling into place.

“Anyone else?””

Marcus hesitated.

And Evelyn noticed.

“Who else?””

Marcus said nothing.

“Who else?””

His voice became quieter.

“Claudia.””

Brielle looked shocked.

“My mother?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father thought someone was using her.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Using her for what?””

“She had access to records.””

“So you thought Claudia was involved?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your father didn’t know.””

The confusion grew.

“Then why was she on the list?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Because someone wanted it to look like she was.””

A silence followed.

Nathan slowly understood.

“This was a setup.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked at the photograph again.

The three people standing beside the car.

Her father.

Claudia.

Marcus.

Three people connected by a secret.

One person who died.

One person who disappeared.

One person who stayed.

“You survived.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

“And Claudia didn’t.””

“Yes.””

“And my father didn’t.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why were you the only one left?””

The question hurt him.

She saw it.

But she needed the answer.

Marcus looked away.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Before Evelyn could respond, Nathan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Evelyn noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

Nathan turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown number.

*Stop digging into the past.*

A second message arrived.

*You already lost one family. Don’t lose another.*

Brielle stepped back.

“They know we’re here.””

Marcus looked toward the house.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because this isn’t about the past anymore.””

He looked at her seriously.

“It’s happening now.””

The statement chilled her.

Nathan quickly gathered the files.

“Mrs. Carter, we should move these somewhere secure.””

Evelyn nodded.

But before anyone could move, a sound came from inside the house.

A crash.

Everyone turned.

The glass doors leading into the living room were open.

Nobody had been inside.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Stay here.””

Evelyn almost laughed.

“After everything today, you still think I’m staying behind?””

Marcus looked at her.

This time, he didn’t argue.

Together, they walked inside.

The house felt different.

It was still her home.

But it no longer felt safe.

A drawer near the office had been pulled open.

Papers were scattered across the floor.

Nathan rushed toward the desk.

“The files.””

Evelyn’s heart sank.

“The ones you brought?””

Nathan checked the folder.

Still there.

Then he froze.

“What?””

He pulled out the old document.

The one with her father’s handwriting.

“It’s gone.””

Marcus looked alarmed.

“What?””

“The original note.””

Evelyn felt cold.

The most important piece of evidence.

The one connecting the past to the present.

Someone had entered their home.

Someone had searched the room.

Someone had known exactly what to take.

Then Evelyn noticed something on the desk.

A small object.

A silver key.

She picked it up.

“I’ve never seen this before.””

Marcus looked at it.

And immediately went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

His eyes locked on the key.

“That belonged to Claudia.””

Brielle stepped closer.

“My mother?””

Marcus nodded.

“She kept it hidden.””

“Hidden where?””

Marcus stared at the key.

Then whispered:

“In a place only she and your father knew about.””

Evelyn felt her pulse quicken.

“What place?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Because his phone rang again.

The same unknown number.

He answered slowly.

Nobody spoke at first.

Then a voice came through.

A voice Marcus recognized.

His face changed.

“No.””

Evelyn watched him.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The voice on the other end spoke again.

And this time, everyone heard it through the speaker.

“Marcus…”

A woman’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Alive.

Evelyn froze.

Because she recognized the name Marcus whispered next.

“Claudia?””

The garden, the files, the insurance policy, the lies…

All of it suddenly felt smaller.

May you like

Because the woman who was supposed to be dead…

was calling her husband’s phone.
