Chapter 14: The Man Who Sold Our Silence

Dad called Thomas seventeen times.

He didn't answer once.

By six that evening, Richard had confirmed that the company named in the clinic's records was registered to Thomas Carter. Its business address was a rented office, and its accounts had received several payments from an estate associated with Martin Whitmore.

The payments had begun six months earlier.

The same month Claire's request to destroy the statement had been prepared.

Dad paced the living room while Richard explained the records.

“Thomas was paid to keep the document hidden.””

“Possibly,” Richard said.

“The transfers are suspicious, but we need to establish their purpose. The company may have been used without his knowledge.””

Dad held up the photograph of Thomas with Claire.

“Then explain this.””

“I can't explain it yet.””

Dad looked toward the window.

“I defended him. I believed him when he said he was protecting Elena's wishes.””

Richard spoke carefully.

“Daniel, don't let anger push you into conclusions we can't prove. If Thomas has been involved, we'll find the evidence. If someone is using his name, we need to find that out too.””

Dad nodded, though his expression remained hard.

Then his phone rang.

Thomas.

Dad answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Daniel, please listen to me.””

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Stay there. I'm coming.””

Thomas's voice trembled.

“I can explain.””

“You've had years to explain.””

Dad ended the call.

Rachel insisted on coming with him, but Dad asked her to stay with me.

“I need you here,” he told her.

“If anything changes, I want Madison to have someone she trusts.””

Before he left, Dad hugged me.

“I'll be back soon.””

“Are you going to be angry with Uncle Thomas?””

“Yes,” he admitted.

“But I'm going to listen before I decide what to do.””

I watched his car disappear down the driveway.

Then I sat at the kitchen table with my notebook.

I wrote:

Why do people say they love you and then lie?

Rachel read the question over my shoulder.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“Does lying mean they never loved you?””

She thought about it.

“Sometimes people lie because they're afraid. Sometimes because they want something. And sometimes they convince themselves that they're doing the right thing when they're really protecting themselves.””

“Can they still be forgiven?””

“Yes. But forgiveness doesn't mean you have to trust them again immediately.””

I looked at the pendant in my hand.

“Can someone be sorry and still have to face what they did?””

Rachel nodded.

“Absolutely.””

At Thomas's apartment, Dad found him sitting at the kitchen table with a stack of documents.

Thomas looked exhausted.

“I was going to call you.””

“You've said that before.””

Dad placed the photograph on the table.

“Explain.””

Thomas looked at it.

His face fell.

“I met Claire three weeks ago.””

“Why?””

“She told me she had the original laboratory report.””

Dad stared at him.

“What?””

“She said Elena had given her a copy before she died. She claimed the report proved there was a serious discrepancy in Madison's records, and she wanted me to help her obtain the remaining documents.””

“You knew about the report?””

“I knew Elena had requested a test. I didn't know where the results were.””

“And you accepted money from Claire.””

Thomas shook his head.

“The payments went to the company. I never took money personally.””

“That's not an answer.””

Thomas opened a folder.

“The company was supposed to provide records-management services. Claire said she needed someone to help organize her father's estate documents. She told me the clinic's statement was part of that estate.””

Dad's voice rose.

“You're a lawyer. You knew the statement concerned a living child's medical records. You knew Claire had tried to obtain guardianship of Madison. And you still accepted the work?””

Thomas looked down.

“I was trying to get access to the original documents.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't trust you to believe me after everything I'd hidden.””

Dad stared at him in disbelief.

“So you hid more things.””

Thomas nodded.

“I was wrong.””

“Did you submit the destruction request?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize it?””

“No.””

“Then why is your company listed as the director?””

Thomas pulled out a document.

“Claire asked me to register the company so we could request archived records through a legal services provider. She said the company would be used only for that purpose. I signed the incorporation paperwork, but I didn't authorize anyone to destroy a document.””

Dad studied him.

“Who had access to the company account?””

“Claire's attorney. I gave him access to handle the records requests.””

“Did you know he had requested the statement's destruction?””

“No.””

Thomas took a shaky breath.

“I found out this afternoon. That's why I called you.””

Dad didn't respond.

Thomas pushed another paper across the table.

It was a letter from Claire, dated three weeks earlier.

In it, she claimed that Elena had left her an original genetic report and instructed her to protect Madison from Daniel if the records proved he was not the child's biological father.

Dad read the letter twice.

“She used Elena's name to justify everything.””

“I believe so.””

“You believe so?””

Thomas's voice cracked.

“I can't tell you what Claire truly believed. I can only tell you what she told me.””

Dad dropped the letter.

“Did you ever see the report?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he reached into a drawer and took out a small envelope.

“I saw one page.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Claire gave it to me during our meeting. She said it was a summary of the test results.””

Dad opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a laboratory report. Several sections had been blacked out, and the page had no visible signature.

One line remained legible.

*Biological relationship: consistent with tested paternal parentage.*

Dad stared at it.

“Who was tested?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Claire wouldn't tell me.””

“Then how could she claim it proved I wasn't Madison's biological father?””

“She said the original report identified another person.””

Dad looked up.

“Did you believe her?””

“I wanted to believe that the report could explain why Elena had been frightened. But I didn't know whether the copy was complete or authentic.””

Dad put the page back in the envelope.

“Where is the original?””

“I don't know. Claire said it was in a secure location.””

“Where?””

“She wouldn't tell me.””

Dad stood.

“You should have come to me the moment you saw this.””

“I know.””

“You should have told me about the payments.””

“I know.””

“You should have told me about the guardianship petition, the package, and the letters.””

Thomas bowed his head.

“I know.””

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Then Thomas said, “There's something else. Claire told me she wasn't trying to take Madison away because of the records. She said she was trying to prevent someone else from doing it first.””

Dad turned slowly.

“Who?””

“She never gave me a name. But she said the person who could identify Madison's biological father had started asking questions again.””

Dad's face hardened.

“Who could identify him?””

Thomas looked at the photocopy.

“The donor's identity was supposed to remain confidential. But Martin Whitmore was involved in the original records. If anyone knew whether the number had been changed, it was him.””

“Martin is dead.””

“Yes. But Claire claimed he left a private file containing the donor's name.””

Dad looked at the envelope.

“Where is that file?””

Thomas swallowed.

“I think Claire has it.””

Dad returned home after dark.

He told Rachel everything he had learned, including the suspicious payments and the incomplete laboratory report.

Rachel was furious.

“Thomas knew Claire was trying to control Madison's future, and he still worked with her?””

“He says he was trying to get the records.””

“And he didn't think to tell you?””

Dad rubbed his face.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.””

I came into the room holding my notebook.

“Did you find the truth?””

Dad looked at me.

“Not yet, sweetheart.””

I sat beside him.

“Is Uncle Thomas a bad person?””

Dad considered the question.

“I think he made serious mistakes. Whether he can make things right is something he'll have to prove.””

“Do you hate him?””

“No. But I'm hurt, and I don't trust him right now.””

I leaned against Dad.

“That's how I feel about Claire.””

He wrapped his arm around me.

“You're allowed to feel that way.””

The following morning, Richard called with an update.

The laboratory had completed its identity verification and was ready to release Elena's sealed report.

But before the document could be delivered, the laboratory's legal department received an emergency request to suspend the release.

The request claimed that disclosure could expose the identity of a protected donor and cause irreparable harm.

It was signed by Claire Whitmore.

Richard filed an objection immediately.

Then he called Dad.

“The laboratory has also received a letter from Claire's attorney,” he said.

“It claims Claire is the lawful custodian of the original report under Elena's instructions.””

Dad's expression darkened.

“She has no such authority.””

“That's what we intend to establish.””

Richard paused.

“There is one more development. Claire has requested a hearing regarding temporary guardianship of Madison.””

Dad stood.

“She lost that petition three years ago.””

“This is a new application. It alleges that the recent dispute over Madison's medical records has created instability in your home.””

Dad stared at the phone.

“She is using the uncertainty she helped create to argue that I can't care for my own daughter.””

“That's how the application appears to be framed.””

Dad ended the call and immediately contacted his attorney.

For the first time, Claire wasn't hiding behind old photographs, missing letters, or anonymous messages.

And this time, she wanted the judge to believe that the only person who could protect me was the woman who had spent years making me feel unwanted.
