Chapter 9: The Family Hidden Beyond the Lies
“That’s your sister.””
The words should have been impossible.
They should have sounded ridiculous.
A story too unbelievable to exist.
But nothing about my life made sense anymore.
A dead mother who was alive.
A missing uncle who returned.
A brother who vanished.
And now…
A sister.
I stared at the photograph on my father’s phone.
The woman beside Gabriel sat in the shadows.
Her face was partially hidden.
But the bracelet.
That bracelet.
A small silver chain with a tiny blue stone.
My mother had worn one exactly like it.
I remembered.
Not clearly.
Not like a normal memory.
Like a photograph buried under years of dust.
A woman holding me.
A baby crying.
A little girl laughing.
A voice saying:
“Marcus, be gentle. She’s your little sister.””
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“I remember.””
Everyone looked at me.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What?””
I closed my eyes.
“There was a baby.””
My voice shook.
“I thought it was a dream.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“Marcus…”
“I remember a blanket.””
I looked at her.
“Yellow.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You remember.””
I opened my eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked broken.
“Because Richard told me you forgot.””
I turned toward my father.
Again.
Always him.
Always another wall.
Another locked door.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
I stared.
“You didn’t know?””
He shook his head.
“I thought she was gone.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard.””
My father looked at him.
“I thought everyone was gone.””
The words were quiet.
Almost human.
But they didn’t erase anything.
I pointed at the phone.
“Who is she?””
Evelyn wiped her tears.
“Her name is Lily.””
The name landed differently.
Because somewhere inside me…
I knew it.
“Lily.””
My mother nodded.
“She was two years old when everything happened.””
I looked at the picture again.
“Then how…”
Nobody answered.
Daniel did.
“Because someone took them.””
The room went cold.
“Someone took them?””
He nodded.
“After the accident, while everyone was focused on finding Evelyn, Gabriel, and Marcus…”
He looked at my father.
“Someone moved Lily.””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Yes.””
“Impossible.””
“You really believed you controlled everything.””
The anger between them was decades old.
“You thought hiding the truth meant owning it.””
My father looked away.
I felt something crack inside me.
Because for years, I thought my father was the person who protected me from the world.
Now I wondered if he was the person I needed protection from.
“Where is Lily?””
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
“I don’t know.””
Her voice broke.
“But she’s alive.””
I looked at her.
“You never stopped looking?””
She shook her head.
“Never.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Claire spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
Everyone turned.
I looked at her.
My heart sank.
Because every secret in my life seemed to come with another.
“What?””
She stepped forward slowly.
“I wasn’t involved in your mother disappearing.””
I waited.
“But…”
She looked down.
“I knew about Lily.””
The room froze.
I couldn’t speak.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Before I met you.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“When I first started working with your father’s company, I found old files.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What files?””
She looked at him.
“The ones you thought were destroyed.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“What did you find?””
Claire looked at him.
“Records about the accident.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Because your father made me believe you were safer not knowing.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“And I was wrong.””
That honesty hurt more than an excuse.
“You should have told me.””
“I should have.””
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
I wanted to be angry.
But the woman standing in front of me wasn’t the enemy.
She was another person trapped in my father’s shadow.
Daniel opened the notebook again.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“Of course there is.””
He didn’t react.
“There was a reason Gabriel and Lily survived.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What reason?””
“They weren’t just witnesses.””
He looked at my father.
“They had something.””
My father’s face changed.
“What?””
Daniel pulled out a small flash drive.
My heart sank.
“You kept that?””
Daniel nodded.
“Gabriel gave it to me.””
“What’s on it?””
“Everything.””
The room went silent.
My father stood suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time, he wasn’t angry.
He was terrified.
“What is on it?””
Daniel held the drive tightly.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
Daniel stared at him.
“Of who really caused the accident.””
The air disappeared.
My father looked like he had aged ten years.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“The person who ordered it wasn’t your father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Everyone looked confused.
Daniel continued.
“Richard made terrible choices. He lied. He covered things up.””
He looked at my father.
“But he didn’t cut those brakes.””
My father closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting thirty years to hear that.
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The person who benefited the most.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Before he could answer…
The mansion lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Someone screamed.
Glass shattered somewhere near the hallway.
My body reacted before my mind.
I grabbed Claire and pulled her down.
The emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
Security rushed toward the entrance.
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
A door opening.
Slowly.
Everyone froze.
Because nobody was upstairs.
I looked at my father.
“Who else is in this house?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel moved toward the stairs.
“Stay back.””
But I followed.
“No.””
“Marcus.””
“I’m done staying behind.””
We climbed slowly.
Each step felt louder than the last.
The hallway was empty.
Except for one thing.
A photograph lying on the floor.
A new photograph.
I picked it up.
My hands started shaking.
It showed my family.
Not the family I knew.
The family I never knew existed.
My mother.
My father.
Daniel.
Gabriel.
Lily.
And me.
Standing together.
Smiling.
But there was one person standing behind us.
Someone whose face had been scratched out.
Daniel took the picture from me.
His expression changed.
“Impossible.””
“What?””
He turned it over.
On the back was a message.
Fresh ink.
Not thirty years old.
Written tonight.
*You’re looking for the wrong villain.*
My father stepped closer.
Then he stopped.
Because beneath the message was another line.
A name.
The name of the person who took the picture.
The name of the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
My father whispered:
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
His voice barely existed.
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather died before I was born.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“That’s what we were told.””
The hallway went silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Meet me alone if you want to know why your entire family disappeared.*
Below it was an address.
And a name.
The sender.
I stared at the screen.
Because the name belonged to someone I thought I would never see.
May you like
Someone who had been dead for thirty years.
*Charles Hayes.*
