Chapter 7: The Mother Who Was Watching From the Shadows
The letter felt heavier than paper.
I held it between my fingers, staring at the handwriting of a woman I had spent my entire life mourning.
A woman I had buried.
A woman who was standing in front of me.
And yet somehow…
A woman who had been sending messages from the past.
“This isn’t possible,” Evelyn whispered.
Her voice wasn’t angry.
It wasn’t afraid.
It was broken.
She looked at the letter like it had reached out from a life she thought was finished.
I looked at Daniel.
“You said you got this yesterday.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the signature again.
“Then how do you know it’s from my mother?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Because nobody else would know what’s inside.””
My eyes moved back to the words.
If you are reading this, it means Richard failed to keep me hidden.
My stomach tightened.
“Hidden?””
Evelyn sat down slowly.
She looked older than she had moments ago.
Not because of age.
Because of memories.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel walked toward her.
“Evie…”
She looked up.
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“You need to tell him.””
She shook her head.
“I thought it was over.””
“It isn’t.””
I looked between them.
“Tell me what?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked at me.
“The night of the accident…”
Her voice trembled.
“I didn’t die.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
The room became silent.
“What do you mean?””
She looked at the floor.
“Everyone thinks Richard made me disappear.””
My father looked away.
Evelyn continued.
“But that isn’t exactly what happened.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Then what happened?””
She looked at Daniel.
He gave her a small nod.
Like he was telling her she didn’t have to carry it alone anymore.
“I survived the crash.””
Her words were quiet.
“But I was badly injured.””
I listened.
Trying to understand.
Trying to rebuild a childhood I had never been allowed to remember.
“I woke up in a hospital three days later.””
I froze.
“Three days?””
She nodded.
“When I woke up, Richard was there.””
My father’s expression changed.
Evelyn looked at him.
“He told me Marcus was safe.””
I stared at my father.
“You were there?””
He didn’t answer.
My mother continued.
“I asked to see you.””
Her eyes filled.
“I begged.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he say?””
Her voice broke.
“He said you didn’t remember me.””
Nobody moved.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“He told me you woke up calling for your father.””
She wiped her face.
“He told me you were afraid of me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice came out weak.
“That doesn’t sound like me.””
“You were six,” she whispered.
“You were scared.””
I looked at my father.
“Did you tell her that?””
He said nothing.
“Did you tell my mother I was afraid of her?””
His silence answered.
I stepped back.
“How could you?””
My father finally looked at me.
“I thought it would be easier.””
“Easier?””
My voice rose.
“You convinced my mother her own child didn’t want her.””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
The anger in my chest burned.
“But every time you say it, someone else gets hurt.””
My father looked down.
For once, he had no defense.
Evelyn continued.
“After that, Richard told everyone I died.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked toward the letter.
“Because he needed everyone to believe the story was complete.””
Daniel stepped in.
“He couldn’t have a missing wife and a missing child.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus, there was another problem.””
“What problem?””
He glanced at my father.
“Richard wasn’t the only person involved.””
The room went cold again.
I was starting to hate those words.
Because every truth opened another door.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel opened his notebook.
“Your father’s business partners knew about the money.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t.””
Daniel ignored him.
“They knew Evelyn had found out.””
I looked at my mother.
“So they wanted her gone?””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“And my father helped them?””
My father immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then tell him what happened.””
My father stayed silent.
That was enough.
I turned away.
I couldn’t look at him.
Not because I hated him.
Because some part of me still loved him.
And that made everything worse.
A phone rang.
Everyone looked around.
It wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Claire’s.
It was Evelyn’s.
She stared at the screen.
Her face changed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
Nobody had called her that.
Not in front of me.
Not ever.
But the word escaped anyway.
Her eyes filled.
She pressed the phone to her ear.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then her face went completely pale.
“Where?””
She stood suddenly.
“No. Don’t move.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What happened?”” I asked.
She lowered the phone.
Her hands were shaking.
“It’s Daniel.””
Daniel frowned.
“I’m right here.””
She looked at him.
Then at the phone.
“The person who called…”
She swallowed.
“Said they were Daniel.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel slowly stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn looked at the screen.
“There’s a voicemail.””
She pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Weak.
Terrified.
“Evelyn… if you’re hearing this, then he found you.””
Daniel froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
I saw it immediately.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
“Don’t trust Richard. Don’t trust anyone who says they’re protecting Marcus.””
My heart stopped.
Then the voice said:
“The truth about the accident is worse than you think.””
A pause.
Heavy breathing.
Then:
“Marcus was never the target.””
The room went silent.
I felt every person looking at me.
The recording continued.
“The person they wanted was…”
The message cut off.
Static.
Then silence.
Evelyn stared at the phone.
Daniel looked terrified.
My father closed his eyes.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who was the target?””
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
My father whispered:
“You.””
The word hit me harder than anything before.
Me.
Not my mother.
Not Daniel.
Not the money.
Me.
I shook my head.
“Why would anyone want me?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked toward the old photograph.
The one with the six blue stars.
And suddenly, he noticed something.
Something none of us had seen.
He picked it up.
Turned it over.
His fingers traced the faded edges.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“There’s another message.””
My heart raced.
“What does it say?””
Daniel brought the photograph closer to the light.
The writing was nearly invisible.
But enough remained.
Enough to read.
Three words.
The same words that had followed me through my entire life.
He whispered:
“Find the child.””
I stared at him.
“What child?””
Daniel looked at me.
And the fear in his eyes was unlike anything I had seen before.
Because he already knew the answer.
“Marcus…”
He swallowed.
“The child they were looking for…”
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at my father.
Then back at me.
“Wasn’t you.””
I felt the room disappear.
“Then who was it?””
Nobody answered.
Until my father spoke.
And his next words changed everything I believed about my family.
“Marcus…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“You had a brother.””
