Chapter 7: The Truth Behind His Name
Daniel stared at the steel door.
The voice came through again.
“Ask her who your real father is.””
His mother’s knees nearly gave out.
Vanessa caught her before she fell.
“Eleanor,” Vanessa whispered.
Daniel turned sharply.
“Don’t touch her.””
Vanessa released her.
Eleanor sank onto a wooden crate, both hands trembling.
Marcus stood motionless beside the shelves.
Lenora’s gun remained lowered.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked from face to face.
“Who is he?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Son…”
“Who is my father?””
“You know who your father is.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice cracked through the room.
“I know the man who raised me. I know the man whose photographs are all over this house. I know the man who died twenty years ago.””
He pointed toward the steel door.
“But someone just told me I’m not his son.””
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.””
She whispered, “Your father was James.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Silence.
“Mom.””
Her eyes met his.
And Daniel saw it.
The answer had been there for years.
Buried beneath every hesitation.
Every strange look.
Every time she had changed the subject when someone mentioned his resemblance to his father.
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel turned to him.
“You know.””
Marcus said nothing.
“You know who my real father is.””
“I know what James told me.””
“Then tell me.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Your biological father was Calvin Price.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vanessa began crying.
Lily looked confused.
“Who is Calvin?”” she whispered.
Daniel didn't answer.
His entire childhood seemed to rearrange itself in his mind.
The height he inherited.
The shape of his eyes.
The stories his father had never liked telling.
The strangers who occasionally stared at him too long.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
Eleanor reached toward him.
“Daniel.””
He backed away.
“You let me believe James was my father.””
“He was your father.””
“Not by blood.””
“He raised you.””
“That doesn't answer me.””
“He loved you.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everybody loved me enough to lie to me.””
Eleanor flinched.
“James knew.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“Your father knew.””
Marcus nodded.
“He found out when you were a baby.””
“Then why didn't he leave?””
Eleanor's tears rolled down her face.
“Because he loved you.””
Daniel turned toward the steel door.
“Calvin is my father?””
A voice answered from the other side.
“Yes.””
Daniel's entire body went rigid.
The voice no longer sounded like James.
It was deeper.
Older.
Calm.
Calvin’s voice.
Daniel looked at Lenora.
“You said Calvin was James’s attorney.””
Lenora nodded.
“He was.””
“And my biological father.””
“Yes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why would he do this?””
Eleanor whispered, “Because it was complicated.””
“Everything is complicated.””
Daniel pointed to the photographs.
“Twenty years of murder, blackmail, secret accounts, threats against Lily, and now I find out the man I called Dad wasn't my biological father.””
His voice broke.
“What part of this wasn't complicated?””
Lenora stepped forward.
“Calvin and Eleanor had a relationship before James.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
She lowered her eyes.
“It was over before I met James.””
“Then why did Calvin stay?””
“He didn't know about you.””
Marcus added quietly, “Not at first.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then how did he find out?””
“James told him.””
“When?””
“After he discovered the records.””
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“This can't be real.””
Vanessa spoke through her tears.
“It is.””
He turned.
“How much did you know?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Enough.””
“Enough?””
“I found out before we married.””
Daniel stared.
“You knew who my biological father was.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
He gave her a hollow smile.
“That excuse is getting old.””
Vanessa walked toward him.
“I found the original files after we got married. Your father had hidden them in the old office.””
“What did they say?””
“That Calvin had financed some of the business.””
“That isn't a crime.””
“No.””
She looked toward the steel door.
“But he wasn't only financing it.””
Daniel waited.
Vanessa swallowed.
“He was one of the people collecting information.””
“About James?””
“Yes.””
“About my mother?””
“Yes.””
“And about me?””
Her silence was enough.
Daniel turned away.
Lily stepped closer.
“Daddy?””
He crouched so they were at eye level.
“I'm here.””
“Are you mad at me?””
His heart shattered.
“No.””
“Are you still my daddy?””
Daniel hugged her.
“Always.””
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Even if that man is your real daddy?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Behind them, Eleanor began sobbing quietly.
Daniel stood.
The steel door shook.
Everyone froze.
A fist struck it.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice.
“Eleanor, open the door.””
Calvin.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“How does he know we're here?””
“Because he knows the house.””
“He shouldn't.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“James never changed the access codes.””
Daniel looked toward the shelves.
“There are access codes?””
“There used to be.””
Lenora moved toward the nearest computer.
“There may be another entrance.””
She switched on an old monitor.
The screen flickered.
A password box appeared.
Daniel saw a handwritten note taped beneath it.
*First memory.*
He stared.
“What's my first memory?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Your sixth birthday.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That's what you remember.””
“What does that mean?””
“James made you believe your first memory was that birthday.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why?””
“Because your real first memory was from the night he brought you home.””
Daniel’s brow furrowed.
“I was a baby.””
“You were old enough to remember a voice.””
“What voice?””
She looked at the steel door.
“Calvin.””
The monitor suddenly flashed.
*PASSWORD ACCEPTED.*
Everyone jumped.
Lenora turned.
“I didn't enter anything.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
A video file appeared.
*DANIEL—1992.*
His stomach tightened.
Marcus whispered, “James recorded everything.””
Daniel clicked the file.
The screen filled with grainy footage.
A young Eleanor sat on a hospital bed.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face looked exhausted.
Beside her stood James.
Young.
Terrified.
And carrying a newborn baby.
Daniel covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
James looked into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Daniel, you're old enough to know why I lied.””
Eleanor began crying beside him.
James continued.
“You are my son because I chose to be your father.””
He paused.
“But I wasn't your biological father.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
James's recorded voice continued.
“Calvin doesn't know what I know yet. When he finds out, he'll come for you.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
The screen showed James placing a small envelope beside Eleanor.
“You must never trust him.””
Lenora stared at the monitor.
Marcus whispered, “He knew.””
The recording continued.
“I made a deal with Calvin to keep Eleanor safe.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“What deal?””
Nobody answered.
On screen, James continued.
“I promised Calvin he could have the company.””
Daniel frowned.
“In return, I kept the house and raised the child.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“That isn't all.””
The recording suddenly skipped.
Static.
Then James appeared again.
His face was bruised.
Blood covered one side of his shirt.
Daniel stood abruptly.
“What happened to him?””
No one answered.
James looked directly into the camera.
“If they tell you I died in an accident, don't believe them.””
Daniel's pulse raced.
“Dad…”
James continued.
“Because the accident was staged.””
The video cut to black.
Lily cried softly.
Daniel stared at the blank screen.
His father hadn't died accidentally.
His father had known he was going to die.
And he had recorded a message specifically for Daniel.
A tiny red light blinked on the old computer.
*FILE 2 AVAILABLE.*
Daniel clicked it.
The next video showed Calvin.
Young.
Standing in a parking garage.
Across from him stood James.
They were arguing.
Daniel increased the volume.
Calvin said, “You promised me the boy.””
James answered, “He's not yours.””
Calvin grabbed him by the shirt.
“You know what he is.””
James pushed him away.
“You're not taking him.””
Calvin said something Daniel couldn't hear.
James froze.
Then Calvin stepped closer.
“He'll come back to me eventually.””
The video ended.
Daniel stared at Eleanor.
“What did he mean?””
Eleanor was shaking.
“He knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Calvin wasn't just your biological father.””
Daniel waited.
Eleanor took a trembling breath.
“He was looking for something inside you.””
Daniel frowned.
“What could possibly be inside me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“The birthmark.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“You have a birthmark on your shoulder.””
“So?””
“It's not just a birthmark.””
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“It's a symbol.””
Daniel slowly touched his shoulder.
“What symbol?””
Vanessa whispered, “A code.””
Lenora’s expression changed.
“That's why Calvin wants him alive.””
Daniel stared.
“Alive for what?””
The steel door suddenly unlocked.
Everyone turned.
Calvin’s voice came through the opening.
“For the same reason your father died.””
The door began opening.
Daniel pulled Lily behind him.
Calvin stepped into the room.
He wasn't holding a gun.
He didn't need one.
He looked directly at Daniel.
Then at the birthmark beneath Daniel’s collar.
And smiled.
May you like
“My son,” Calvin said softly.
“You finally found the key.””
