The Birthday She Never Got / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Truth on the Screen

Marcus Thompson wasn’t supposed to come home early.

That was the only reason Rochelle thought she could get away with everything.

She knew his schedule.

She knew he was supposed to be at a job site across town until late afternoon.

She knew he trusted her.

What she didn’t know was that one of his workers had finished early, and for the first time in weeks, Marcus decided to leave before sunset.

He was excited.

That morning, he had called me before work.

“Happy birthday, princess.””

I smiled into the phone.

“Thank you, Daddy.””

“You ready for your party?””

I looked at the ceiling.

I wanted to tell him.

I wanted to say, Daddy, something is wrong.

But I was scared.

I didn’t want to sound like I was complaining.

I didn’t want him to think I didn’t like Rochelle.

So I just said, “Yeah.””

That was the thing about kids.

Sometimes we don’t tell the truth because we don’t know if the adults we love will believe us.

When Daddy pulled into the driveway that afternoon, he heard the celebration before he even opened the door.

Music.

Laughter.

People cheering.

He smiled.

He thought he was walking into a happy memory.

Then he saw me.

I was sitting halfway down the staircase.

Alone.

My purple dress was wrinkled from hours of sitting.

My eyes were swollen.

And I was holding a stuffed animal against my chest like it was the only thing in the world that hadn’t forgotten me.

Daddy froze.

“Ava?””

I looked up.

The second I saw him, everything I had been holding inside broke.

“Daddy.””

I tried to stand, but my legs felt heavy.

He rushed toward me.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

I just cried.

Daddy looked over my shoulder toward the living room.

Guests were gathered around the coffee table.

Kayla was opening presents.

People were clapping.

A giant sign with her name hung behind her.

Marcus stared.

Then Rochelle appeared.

She walked out of the kitchen with a surprised expression.

“Marcus! You’re home early.””

He looked at her.

“What is going on?””

She smiled nervously.

“What do you mean?””

He pointed toward me.

“Why is Ava upstairs crying during her own birthday party?””

Rochelle shook her head immediately.

“Oh, honey, that’s not what happened.””

Daddy’s face changed.

“What do you mean?””

“She wanted some alone time,” Rochelle said.

“You know how emotional she gets.””

I looked at her.

I couldn’t believe she said it.

She was blaming me.

Daddy looked back at me.

“Ava?””

My mouth opened.

But before I could speak, Kayla walked into the room.

She was holding her phone.

“Dad.””

Everyone became quiet.

Rochelle’s face changed.

“Kayla, go back inside.””

But Kayla didn’t move.

For the first time, she looked scared of her own mother.

“I need to tell him.””

Rochelle stepped forward.

“Kayla.””

“No.””

Her voice shook, but she stood her ground.

“I need to.””

Daddy looked between them.

“What’s on that phone?””

Kayla swallowed.

“Everything.””

She handed it to him.

Daddy pressed play.

The first video showed Rochelle in the dining room that morning.

She was moving decorations.

Ava’s purple decorations.

She was taking down the banner with my name.

Then Rochelle’s voice filled the room.

“Kayla deserves this more. Her family actually appreciates these things.””

Daddy’s jaw tightened.

The video continued.

Rochelle picked up my birthday invitations.

She put them in a drawer.

Then she looked toward the stairs.

“If Ava comes down, tell her to stay upstairs. Today isn’t about her.””

Nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

The truth was standing right there.

Daddy looked at Rochelle.

“Is this real?””

Rochelle’s face turned red.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

That was when I knew he was angry.

Not loud angry.

The kind of angry that comes when someone hurts your child.

“She recorded you.””

“She’s just a child. She doesn’t understand—”

“She understood enough to know something was wrong.””

Kayla started crying.

“I didn’t want her to take Ava’s party.””

Daddy looked at her.

“You knew?””

Kayla nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she turned toward me.

“I should’ve said something sooner.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because I was hurt.

But I also knew Kayla wasn’t the person who caused this.

Daddy walked to the table where the gifts were stacked.

He looked at the names written on the cards.

Most of them said Ava.

He picked one up.

Then another.

“Every single one of these goes back to Ava.””

Rochelle crossed her arms.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

Daddy looked at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You embarrassed yourself.””

The room went silent.

“I gave you my trust,” he said.

“I gave you my home. I gave you a place in my daughter’s life.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And you used it to make her feel like she didn’t belong.””

Rochelle looked away.

“I was just trying to give Kayla a special day.””

Daddy pointed toward me.

“By taking hers?””

She had no answer.

A few hours later, the house was quiet.

The guests were gone.

The pink decorations came down.

The fake birthday disappeared.

And for the first time all day, I was sitting next to my daddy.

He held my hand.

“I’m sorry, Ava.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know.””

“I should have.””

I leaned against him.

After everything, I didn’t need a perfect birthday.

I just needed to know I mattered.

The next morning, Daddy brought home a small purple cake.

Not a huge one.

Not an expensive one.

Just one with my name written across the top.

And standing beside him was Kayla.

She was holding the cake carefully.

“I made something,” she said.

I looked at the plate in her hands.

It wasn’t perfect.

The frosting was uneven.

The letters were crooked.

But it was the most beautiful cake I had ever seen.

Kayla looked at me.

“I’m sorry your birthday got stolen.””

She took a breath.

“But I want to help you get it back.””

And for the first time in a long time, I realized something.

May you like

Sometimes family isn’t just the people who are supposed to love you.

Sometimes family is the person who chooses to stand beside you when it’s hard.
