Chapter 10: The Brother Who Survived
Andre stepped in front of Jasmine.
The man behind Monica stopped in the doorway.
For one long second, nobody moved.
Jasmine clutched Tasha's hand.
“Dad,” she whispered, “that's him.””
Andre kept his eyes on the stranger.
“You put the bottle in her backpack.””
The man didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
Monica closed her eyes.
Andre's voice shook.
“Why?””
The stranger looked at Jasmine.
“Because I needed you to open the bag.””
“You could have killed her.””
“I knew she wouldn't take it.””
“You don't get to decide that.””
“I wasn't trying to hurt your daughter.””
“Then what were you trying to do?””
The man looked at Monica.
“Force her to tell you the truth.””
Andre turned toward his wife.
“You knew him.””
Monica nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
She wiped her face.
“His name is Samuel.””
Andre stared.
The name from the photograph.
The name on the document.
The second son.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Samuel?””
The stranger looked at him.
“You're Marcus.””
Marcus's expression changed.
The man nodded.
“And you're not.””
Silence.
Marcus shook his head.
“Who am I?””
The stranger looked at Andre.
“That's what your family has been hiding for twelve years.””
Andre's chest tightened.
“Start talking.””
Samuel stepped into the room.
“I was born Samuel Hayes.””
Andre stared.
“My mother's second son.””
“Yes.””
“Why did I never know you?””
“Because Evelyn gave me away.””
Andre's face hardened.
“She wouldn't.””
“She did.””
“When?””
“After Daniel was born.””
Samuel looked at Marcus.
“She told everyone I died.””
Marcus whispered, “My mother told me I was her son.””
“She was.””
Andre looked confused.
Samuel nodded.
“She raised you.””
Marcus's face went pale.
“Then why do I look like Daniel?””
“Because you're Daniel's son.””
Andre stared at Marcus.
The pieces collided.
Daniel's secret child.
The photographs.
The letters.
The false identities.
Samuel continued.
“Your mother gave me to another family when I was six. Daniel found me years later.””
Andre's voice dropped.
“Why?””
“Because he discovered Evelyn had been moving children through a private adoption network.””
Monica covered her mouth.
Andre stared at her.
“You knew.””
“I discovered it after I found the letters.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid you wouldn't believe me.””
Samuel spoke quietly.
“Daniel tried to expose her.””
Andre looked at him.
“And that's why he died?””
Samuel nodded.
“Your mother arranged the crash.””
Andre's eyes filled.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel had proof.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What proof?””
Samuel looked at him.
“The records showing that you were Daniel's son.””
Marcus froze.
Samuel continued.
“Evelyn couldn't let Andre know you existed. If he knew Daniel had a child, he would start asking questions.””
Andre remembered the photograph of the pregnant woman.
The letters.
The hospital records.
Everything.
“What happened on October 14?””
Samuel looked directly at him.
“Daniel was supposed to meet me.””
Andre's throat tightened.
“But he never arrived.””
“He did.””
Samuel's voice cracked.
“He arrived at the meeting point. Evelyn was there.””
Andre closed his eyes.
“And then?””
“She confronted him.””
“What did they say?””
Samuel looked down.
“Daniel told her he was going to tell you everything.””
Andre opened his eyes.
“She killed him.””
“No.””
Samuel shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
Andre stared.
“Then who drove the car?””
Samuel looked at Monica.
“She did.””
Andre turned slowly.
Monica was sobbing.
“You?””
Monica nodded.
“I was there.””
“You told me my mother caused it.””
“She did.””
“But you were driving.””
“I was forced to.””
Andre's face twisted.
“That's not an excuse.””
“I know.””
“What happened?””
Monica's voice broke.
“Your mother got into the passenger seat. Daniel was in the back. She told me to drive.””
Andre stared.
“Why would you obey her?””
“Because she had Jasmine.””
The room went silent.
Andre looked at his daughter.
“She had Jasmine?””
“Not then,” Monica said.
“Your mother threatened that she would take Jasmine away from us. She had connections. Lawyers.
Doctors. She could make anything look legitimate.””
Andre's breathing became uneven.
“What happened in the car?””
Monica looked at Samuel.
“Daniel knew he was going to die.””
She pulled a folded photograph from her pocket.
“He gave me something.””
Andre took it.
A tiny hospital bracelet.
*BABY BOY HAYES.*
Monica whispered, “He told me to find his son.””
Andre looked at Marcus.
“You.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn't know.””
“He knew you were being raised under another name,” Monica said.
“He wanted you protected.””
Andre looked at Samuel.
“And you?””
Samuel answered.
“Daniel found me too late.””
“Where were you?””
“Across the street.””
“You saw the crash?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you come forward?””
Samuel's face hardened.
“Because Evelyn found me first.””
Andre felt tears burning his eyes.
“She threatened you.””
“She threatened everyone.””
Monica stepped closer.
“I spent twelve years trying to undo what she did.””
Andre looked at her.
“You lied to me for twelve years.””
“I know.””
“You hid Daniel's son.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe my brother died because of a drunk driver.””
“I know.””
Andre's voice broke.
“And you put our daughter in danger.””
Monica lowered her head.
“I know.””
For several seconds, Andre said nothing.
Then Jasmine spoke.
“Dad?””
He turned.
She held out her hand.
“Can we go home?””
Andre looked at his daughter.
He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.
“Yes.””
Jasmine buried her face against his chest.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“Mom said you'd hate her.””
Andre looked toward Monica.
“I don't know what I feel.””
Monica nodded through tears.
“That’s fair.””
Tasha quietly stepped forward.
“Mr. Hayes, there's something you need to know.””
Andre looked at her.
“The prescription bottle?””
“Yes.””
She held up the medical document Monica had dropped.
“I checked the medication database.””
Andre waited.
“It wasn't dangerous.””
His brow furrowed.
“What was it?””
“Medication prescribed to Monica after a procedure.””
Monica nodded.
“I had surgery.””
Andre looked at her.
“What surgery?””
She hesitated.
Then handed him the final page.
“I had cancer.””
Andre stopped.
“You what?””
“I was diagnosed months ago.””
She looked at Jasmine.
“I didn't tell her because I didn't want her afraid.””
Andre's expression softened for only a second.
“Then why hide the bottle?””
“Because your mother was using my medical records to threaten me.””
Samuel nodded.
“She used the diagnosis as leverage.””
Andre looked at the document again.
The mystery had started with a prescription bottle.
But the bottle had never been the real secret.
It had been bait.
The real secret had been Daniel.
Marcus.
Samuel.
Evelyn.
And a family built around a lie.
Andre looked at Marcus.
“What's your real name?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Marcus is my name.””
Andre frowned.
“Samuel said—”
“He's my father.””
Samuel nodded.
“Marcus was the name Daniel gave him.””
Andre looked at the two men.
“So Daniel had two sons.””
“Yes,” Samuel said.
“One he lost.””
Marcus added, “And one he never got to meet.””
Andre looked at Jasmine.
She was watching them quietly.
Then she reached into the red backpack.
“There was one more thing.””
Andre's heart sank.
“What?””
She pulled out a small envelope.
His name was written across it.
*ANDRE.*
He opened it.
Inside was a final note.
Daniel's handwriting.
Andre recognized it immediately.
His hands trembled as he read.
*Little brother,*
*If you ever find this, don't spend your life asking why I left you.*
*I didn't.*
*I spent mine trying to make sure you and my sons could live without fear.*
*If Jasmine is the one who finds this, then I know you finally learned the truth.*
Andre looked up.
Jasmine was crying.
He read the final line.
*Protect her better than we protected each other.*
Andre folded the letter against his chest.
Then he pulled Jasmine close.
Behind them, Monica began to cry again.
Andre looked at her.
“We're going home.””
Monica nodded.
“But after that,” he said, “you're telling me everything.””
She whispered, “I will.””
Andre looked once more at Daniel's letter.
For twelve years, he had believed the last thing his brother left behind was a wrecked car and an unanswered phone.
He had been wrong.
Daniel had left him the truth.
And somehow, after twelve years buried beneath lies, it had found its way into a little girl's red backpack.
Jasmine squeezed his hand.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Is Uncle Daniel really gone?””
Andre looked at Marcus.
Then Samuel.
Then at the letter.
“Yes,” he said softly.
May you like
“But he made sure we found each other.””
And for the first time since the hospital doors had opened, nobody in the room was hiding anything.
