Chapter 7: The Signature That Shouldn't Exist
Marcus stared at the second signature until the letters blurred.
Daniel Brooks.
His business partner. His closest friend since college. The man who had stood beside him at Poppy's first birthday, carried Marcus's mother to her car when she became too weak to walk, and promised to look after the family if anything ever happened to him.
Daniel had witnessed a document giving Vanessa temporary decision-making authority over Poppy.
And Marcus had never seen it before.
Vanessa reached toward the papers.
"Give those to me.""
Marcus pulled them away.
"Don't touch them.""
"Marcus, you're misunderstanding what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
She glanced toward the breakfast room.
"Not here.""
"Why? Afraid someone might hear the truth?""
Her face tightened.
"This is a private family matter.""
"You put my signature on a document I never signed. You had someone witness it. And now you want privacy?""
Vanessa pressed both hands against the kitchen island.
"You were traveling constantly. Poppy needed consistency. Someone had to make decisions.""
"Then why didn't you ask me?""
"Because you never listened!""
Her voice cracked through the kitchen.
For a moment, Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa seized the silence.
"You were always on the phone. Always in meetings. Every time I tried to discuss the household, you said we'd talk later. I was left to handle everything while you played devoted father whenever you came home.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"You could have told me you were overwhelmed.""
"I did!""
"You never told me my daughter was frightened of you.""
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus studied the document again. The language was formal, but several clauses were unusually broad. The authorization appeared to allow Vanessa to make decisions about Poppy's daily care, educational arrangements, and household routines during Marcus's absences.
It did not appear to grant her unrestricted legal custody. Even so, the document was serious enough to require professional review.
"Did Daniel prepare this?"" Marcus asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
"He helped with the paperwork.""
"Did he know I hadn't signed it?""
"I don't know what he knew.""
"You're telling me he witnessed a signature without seeing me sign?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Don't put words in my mouth.""
Marcus took out his phone.
"I'm calling him.""
"Don't.""
The speed of her response made him pause.
Vanessa seemed to realize her mistake.
She drew herself upright and forced her voice into a calmer register.
"Daniel is a busy man. You're going to drag him into an argument that has nothing to do with him.""
Marcus dialed.
Daniel answered on the fourth ring.
"Marcus? It's early. Everything all right?""
"No. I'm looking at a document with your signature on it.""
Silence.
Then Daniel said, "What document?""
"An emergency household authorization for Poppy. It contains my signature, which I never gave, and yours as a witness.""
Another pause.
"Where did you get that?""
"From an envelope hidden in a storage cupboard.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Listen to me. Don't do anything until we talk in person.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Why?""
"Because I can explain the circumstances.""
"Did you witness me sign it?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Daniel, I asked you a direct question.""
"I witnessed the document, Marcus.""
"Did you see me sign it?""
The silence stretched.
Finally, Daniel said, "No.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa turned toward the window.
"Then why did you sign as a witness?""
Daniel spoke quickly.
"Vanessa told me you'd authorized it verbally. She said you were in a meeting and couldn't sign the final copy, but that you needed the arrangement in place before your next trip.""
"And you accepted that?""
"I trusted her explanation.""
"You witnessed a signature you didn't see.""
"I know how it sounds.""
"It sounds like you signed a statement that wasn't true.""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"I made a mistake.""
Marcus looked at the date again.
"Why did you keep this from me?""
"I thought it was a temporary household arrangement. I didn't realize she'd use it this way.""
"Use it how?""
Daniel hesitated.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"What aren't you telling me?""
"I think you need to speak to a lawyer before making any decisions. I can meet you this morning and bring the messages I still have.""
Marcus ended the call without agreeing to anything.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
"You're going to involve lawyers now?""
"Yes.""
"You'll destroy our relationship over a piece of paper?""
"You destroyed my trust when you let me believe my daughter was safe while you frightened her in my absence.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You have no idea how hard I tried to make this family work.""
Marcus placed the papers inside the envelope.
"Then why did you hide them?""
She looked at him but couldn't answer.
He walked toward the breakfast room.
Poppy was sitting at the table with her blue teddy bear beside her plate. Grace had placed a small bowl of oatmeal in front of her, along with sliced strawberries.
When Marcus entered, Poppy looked up.
"Did you find something bad?""
He pulled out a chair and sat beside her.
"I found something I need to understand.""
"Are you angry?""
"Yes," he admitted.
"But not with you.""
Poppy nodded as if she needed to hear those exact words.
Then she took his hand.
"Can we stay together today?""
Marcus kissed her forehead.
"All day.""
He called his attorney, Evelyn Carter, and asked her to come to the mansion with any specialist she considered appropriate for reviewing the document.
He also instructed Ellis to preserve the relevant security records and provide copies through a secure channel.
No accusations would be made publicly. No document would be altered. No one would pressure Poppy for additional information.
For the first time since returning home, Marcus had a plan that didn't depend on anger.
At ten-thirty, Daniel arrived.
He carried a slim folder and looked as though he hadn't slept.
Vanessa was waiting in the living room.
The moment he entered, she stood.
"You promised me you'd handle this.""
Daniel stopped near the doorway.
"I promised to help you organize household paperwork. I never promised to lie to Marcus.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"Don't pretend you're innocent. You signed it.""
"Yes," Daniel said.
"And I shouldn't have.""
Marcus entered from the hallway.
"Then tell me everything.""
Daniel opened the folder.
"I have messages from the day Vanessa asked me to witness the document. She told me you'd approved it verbally. I didn't contact you to verify that claim.""
"Why not?""
"Because I thought she was telling the truth. And because I wanted to avoid delaying the paperwork.""
Marcus stared at him.
"You put convenience ahead of checking whether I had actually agreed.""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You both know the purpose was to protect Poppy. I never intended to hurt her.""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Intentions don't erase what happened.""
Evelyn arrived a few minutes later. After reviewing the document and Daniel's messages, she advised Marcus not to rely on the authorization until its authenticity and legal effect had been assessed.
She also recommended that all relevant records be preserved and that any future arrangements concerning Poppy be made transparently and through proper legal channels.
Marcus agreed.
Vanessa sat rigidly on the sofa, twisting a ring around her finger.
Then Daniel pulled one final sheet from his folder.
"There is something else," he said.
Marcus looked at him.
"What?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"She asked me to prepare a second version of the authorization.""
Vanessa shot to her feet.
"Daniel!""
He continued anyway.
"The second version was dated for next month. It contained broader language about long-term care arrangements if you became unavailable for an extended period.""
Marcus felt a chill move through him.
"Why would she need a second version?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"Because you said the first one wasn't clear enough!""
Daniel turned toward her.
"I said the wording was legally uncertain. I told you to consult an attorney. I never said to create another document using Marcus's signature.""
Marcus looked between them.
The room seemed suddenly too small.
He had come home because his daughter was crying beside a metal bowl.
Now he was looking at evidence of a document he had never signed, a witness who admitted he hadn't seen the signature made, and a second version that had apparently been discussed without his knowledge.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Is there anything else I need to know?""
She stared at him.
For a moment, she seemed ready to speak.
Then she looked at Daniel.
And whatever she saw in his expression made her close her mouth.
Marcus waited.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, "You should ask Daniel why he agreed to help me in the first place.""
Daniel's face drained of color.
Marcus turned slowly toward his friend.
"Why did you?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Evelyn's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, her expression growing more serious.
Then she looked directly at Marcus.
"The document isn't the only issue," she said.
"There may be a financial transaction connected to the same period.""
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
"What transaction?""
Evelyn glanced at Daniel's folder.
"A payment authorized through one of your household accounts.""
Vanessa gripped the back of the sofa.
May you like
Marcus looked at her.
And for the first time, she didn't try to deny it.
