Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Me Free
For a moment, nobody breathed.
Not me.
Not Victor.
Not even Richard Vale.
The accusation hung in the room like a weapon.
*Your father took you.*
I looked at Victor.
The man who had cried when he saw my bracelet.
The man who told me he searched for me.
The man who said he loved my mother.
My father.
Or the man pretending to be him.
My mind couldn’t decide what to believe.
“You’re lying.””
The words came out quietly.
Richard looked at me.
“I expected you to say that.””
“Because you know it’s not true.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
“No.””
He looked at Victor.
“Because everyone always chooses the version of the truth that hurts less.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Richard, you need to stop.””
Richard laughed.
“You still think you have control.””
Victor’s voice became colder.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Richard reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a small folder.
He placed it on the table.
“Then let’s let Jaylen decide.””
I stared at the folder.
“What is that?””
Richard looked at me.
“The evidence your mother collected.””
Damien stepped forward.
“You had those?””
Richard ignored him.
“She spent years searching for the truth.””
He looked at me.
“And she found it.””
My hands tightened.
“What truth?””
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
The first page had my name.
*Jaylen Victor Carter.*
But below it was something else.
A birth record.
My eyes moved across the page.
Father.
Victor Hayes.
Mother.
Angela Carter.
Everything matched.
I looked up.
“That proves he’s my father.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“What?””
His smile faded.
“You heard me.””
I turned toward Victor.
Richard continued.
“Victor Hayes is your biological father.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why did you say he took me?””
Richard looked down.
“Because he did.””
The confusion was overwhelming.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at Richard.
“Tell him the whole story.””
Richard smiled.
“Gladly.””
He pointed to the documents.
“Your mother and Victor were planning to leave.””
I looked at Victor.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
Richard continued.
“They wanted to disappear from Damien’s influence.””
Damien’s face hardened.
“That is not what happened.””
Richard ignored him.
“Angela knew Damien was dangerous.””
I looked at Damien.
“Was he?””
Damien didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Richard continued.
“But Angela also discovered something about Victor.””
My eyes moved toward him.
Victor looked exhausted.
“She discovered that Victor had been making secret deals.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of deals?””
Richard opened another document.
Financial transfers.
Names.
Dates.
I didn’t understand everything.
But I understood one thing.
Money had moved.
A lot of money.
“Victor was investigating Damien,” Richard said.
“He was trying to expose him.””
I looked at Victor.
“Is that true?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
His eyes met mine.
“Of losing you.””
The answer hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like something my mother would say.
Richard shook his head.
“This is where things get complicated.””
He pulled out another photograph.
It showed Victor holding a small child.
Me.
But the picture looked different.
The child wasn’t happy.
He was crying.
“When Angela discovered Victor had been secretly working against Damien, she thought he was putting you in danger.””
I stared.
“So she left?””
Richard nodded.
“She took you.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Victor looked down.
And that scared me.
“Victor?””
His voice was barely audible.
“She did.””
The room became silent.
I stepped back.
My whole body felt numb.
“You’re saying…”
I looked at Victor.
“My mother took me away from you?””
He nodded.
“She believed she was protecting you.””
My breathing became uneven.
“But you said you searched for me.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because I loved you.””
The words hurt.
Because I believed them.
And that made everything worse.
I looked at Richard.
“Then why did you say he took me?””
Richard looked ashamed.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“Because I wanted you to hate him.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Why?””
“Because I needed you separated from everyone.””
“Why?””
Richard was silent.
Then Damien spoke.
“Because Richard was the one controlling everything.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard’s face changed.
Damien continued.
“He wasn’t protecting me.””
A bitter laugh escaped.
“He was using me.””
Richard glared.
“Be careful.””
“No.””
Damien stepped forward.
“For years, you made me believe you were loyal.””
The room became tense.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard smiled.
“You destroyed your own family.””
The two men stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood.
They weren’t allies.
They were enemies.
Everyone had been fighting everyone.
And I had been trapped in the middle.
I looked at the documents again.
“Where is my mother?””
Nobody answered.
Then Victor pulled out his phone.
He opened a hidden file.
“I found this before you arrived.””
Richard’s face changed.
“What?””
Victor pressed play.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My knees almost gave out.
“Jaylen.””
Her voice.
After eight years.
“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””
She looked into the camera.
“But if you’re watching, it means everyone finally stopped protecting you from the truth.””
Tears filled my eyes.
She continued.
“I need you to know something.””
She smiled sadly.
“I never forgot you.””
I covered my mouth.
“I thought about you every day.””
The room disappeared.
There was only her.
My mother.
“I need you to forgive everyone who made mistakes trying to save you.””
She paused.
“But especially yourself.””
My tears fell.
“You were never the reason people suffered.””
A shaky breath.
“You were the reason people fought.””
The video continued.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there for your graduation.””
I laughed through tears.
Because somehow she knew.
“I wanted to see you in that cap.””
My heart broke.
“I wanted to hear your name called.””
The video ended with one final sentence.
“Jaylen, if you’re ready to know where I am…”
A pause.
“Come home.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Victor looked at me.
“She’s alive.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time in years, hope didn’t feel painful.
It felt possible.
A week later, I stood in front of a small house outside the city.
Not a mansion.
Not a place protected by cameras.
Just a simple house with flowers in the yard.
The kind of place my mother would choose.
My hands shook before I knocked.
The door opened.
And everything stopped.
She looked older.
Her hair had more gray.
Her face had more lines.
But she was still my mother.
“Jaylen.””
I couldn’t move.
Neither could she.
Then she whispered:
“My baby.””
And I finally broke.
I stepped forward.
She held me like she was afraid I would disappear.
Like she was the one who had been searching.
“I’m sorry.””
I cried into her shoulder.
“I’m so sorry.””
She held me tighter.
“I know.””
Behind me, Victor stood quietly.
Marcus stood beside him.
Even Damien had come.
Not as a powerful businessman.
Not as a man in control.
Just as an old man who finally understood what he had destroyed.
Months later, everything changed.
Richard Vale was arrested after the evidence Angela collected was released.
Damien stepped away from his company.
Victor rebuilt the relationship he thought he had lost forever.
And Marcus…
Marcus became the brother I never knew I needed.
The graduation ceremony was rescheduled.
A small celebration.
Just family.
This time, I wore a real gown.
A real cap.
And when my name was called, I heard the loudest voice in the crowd.
My mother.
“Jaylen Carter!””
I looked at her.
At Victor.
At Marcus.
At everyone who had fought for me.
For years, I thought my story was about being abandoned.
I was wrong.
My story was about being found.
Not because someone discovered where I was.
But because I finally discovered who I was.
And as I threw my cap into the air, I realized something my mother had always known.
The truth can hurt.
The truth can break you.
May you like
But the truth also gives you something no lie ever can.
A chance to begin again. :::
