Chapter 7: The Friend Behind the Betrayal

I had spent twelve years looking for the person who broke my family apart.

I searched for enemies.

I searched for strangers.

I searched for the people who wanted the club destroyed.

But I never searched for the person standing in front of me.

Because I trusted him.

Because I defended him.

Because I called him family.

The figure stepped fully into the warehouse light.

And every memory I had of the last twelve years suddenly felt different.

The late nights.

The private conversations.

The advice.

The warnings.

The moments when he told me who to trust and who to fear.

All of it.

Every single moment.

A carefully built cage.

I couldn’t speak.

Neither could anyone else.

Then Reggie whispered the name.

“Marcus.””

The man smiled.

Not a cruel smile.

That would have been easier.

It was almost disappointed.

Like he expected this moment eventually.

“Hello, Reggie.””

My eyes moved between them.

Marcus.

The man who stood beside me after Ghost disappeared.

The man who helped me rebuild the club.

The man who told me Ghost betrayed us.

The man who said he was protecting the legacy.

The man whose name Daniel had hidden from me.

My voice came out quiet.

“Tell me it isn’t true.””

Marcus looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something in his face.

Something like sadness.

Then it disappeared.

“You still ask the same question.””

“What question?””

“Whether people you love are capable of hurting you.””

The answer made my stomach tighten.

Because it wasn’t a denial.

It was almost a confession.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stay away from him, Bear.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You survived.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Because I knew what you were.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“No.””

He looked around the warehouse.

“Because you finally accepted what everyone else already knew.””

“What?””

“That Bear was never meant to lead.””

The words hit like a slap.

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know me.””

A strange expression crossed his face.

Almost pity.

“I know you better than anyone.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew what I showed you.””

Marcus smiled.

“And that’s exactly why you were easy to guide.””

The room went cold.

I had known Marcus longer than almost anyone.

Before he became the club’s strategist.

Before people called him the smartest man in the room.

Before anyone trusted him.

He was the person who noticed things others missed.

When I made a mistake, he saw the consequences.

When I struggled, he found solutions.

When the club was falling apart, he was the one who helped me rebuild.

I remembered sitting with him after Ghost disappeared.

I remembered staring at empty chairs in the clubhouse.

I remembered telling him:

“I don’t know if I can do this.””

And Marcus had placed a hand on my shoulder.

“You can. You just need to stop looking backward.””

I thought he was helping me heal.

Now I wondered if he was helping me forget.

“You manipulated everything.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

“I corrected things.””

“Corrected?””

“Yes.””

He walked closer.

“The club was weak.””

“You destroyed it.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“The people inside it destroyed it.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You framed innocent people.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t get to talk about innocence.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

Marcus nodded.

“You did.””

A pause.

“But I never expected you to become a threat.””

I stared at Daniel.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That bothered me.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I was investigating Marcus.””

Marcus smiled.

“And you found too much.””

Daniel continued.

“I discovered he wasn’t working alone.””

My eyes moved back to Marcus.

“Who else?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was when I knew.

There was someone else.

Someone above him.

Someone who had been hidden even deeper.

A sudden noise came from outside.

Engines.

Several vehicles.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

“They’re here.””

Reggie raised his weapon.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t look at him.

“Everyone who wants that box.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Bear, we need to go.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You knew they were coming.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because I wanted you to finally see the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

He looked toward the metal box.

“I expect you to open it.””

The answer surprised me.

“What?””

Marcus nodded toward the box.

“Daniel hid the evidence because he thought it would expose me.””

A pause.

“But he was wrong.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Your box doesn’t expose one person.””

He looked at me.

“It exposes everyone.””

Nobody moved.

The warehouse doors shook.

Someone outside was forcing them open.

Marcus continued.

“The club’s history isn’t what you think.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who started everything is not someone you’ll believe.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You still think you’re the hero.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“And you still think you’re the smartest person alive.””

The two men stared at each other.

Two sides of a war I had never known existed.

I looked at the box.

At the notebooks.

At the evidence that had been hidden from me.

Then I made a decision.

I grabbed the box.

Marcus watched.

“You’re finally choosing.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I lifted the box.

“I’m finally thinking for myself.””

For the first time, Marcus looked surprised.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The man who had planned everything didn’t expect me to stop following his script.

We escaped through the back entrance.

The old warehouse had a hidden service tunnel beneath the storage area.

A tunnel Marcus apparently didn’t know about.

Or maybe he did.

At this point, I trusted nothing.

We moved through the darkness.

Daniel carried Eli.

Ghost walked beside me.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Then Ghost finally said:

“You okay?””

I looked at him.

The question almost made me angry.

“Am I?””

He looked down.

“I deserved that.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But I need answers.””

“You’ll get them.””

“Not later.””

I stopped walking.

“Now.””

Ghost looked at me.

The old Ghost was gone.

The man standing beside me looked tired.

Broken.

“I left because Marcus threatened everyone I loved.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He knew where my family lived.””

My expression changed.

“Your family?””

Ghost nodded.

“He told me if I didn’t disappear, they would suffer.””

I looked toward Daniel.

“Did he know?””

Daniel nodded.

“He did.””

“Then why didn’t either of you tell me?””

Ghost looked away.

“Because Marcus knew exactly how you would react.””

“And?””

“You would have gone after him.””

“Yes.””

“And you would have died.””

The anger rose again.

“So you both decided to control my life?””

Ghost didn’t defend himself.

“Yes.””

The honesty stopped me.

“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away.””

I looked at him.

“You let me believe you betrayed me.””

“I know.””

“For twelve years.””

“I know.””

The tunnel became silent.

Then Eli spoke.

“My dad said secrets hurt more than lies.””

Everyone looked at him.

The boy held the metal box tightly.

“He said lies can end.””

He looked at me.

“But secrets keep hurting people.””

Nobody answered.

Because he was right.

We reached the exit.

Outside, the night air felt cold.

Free.

But the danger wasn’t gone.

Not even close.

I opened the box.

Inside the top notebook was a photograph.

Not of the club.

Not of Marcus.

Of my father.

I froze.

I hadn’t seen that picture before.

My father was younger.

Standing beside three men.

Daniel.

Ghost.

And Marcus.

But there was someone else.

A fourth person.

A woman.

I looked closer.

My hands started shaking.

Because I knew her.

Everyone in town knew her.

The person nobody ever connected to the club.

The person everyone thought was gone forever.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the photograph.

He looked at it.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

“No.””

Ghost stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to be part of this.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

The fear in his eyes was different.

Not fear of Marcus.

Something worse.

Fear of someone he thought was impossible.

Then a phone inside the box began ringing.

Everyone froze.

The sound echoed in the night.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like someone knew we would find it.

I picked up the phone.

The screen showed one word.

*MOM.*

My heart stopped.

Because my mother had been dead for twenty years.

And when I answered…

A woman’s voice whispered through the speaker:

“Bear…”

A pause.

“You finally found the truth about your family.””

I couldn’t move.

Then she said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Your father didn’t die.””

Silence.

“He was murdered.””

May you like

And then the voice added:

“By someone who is still standing beside you.””
