Chapter 5: The Signature I Never Remembered

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

The image was blurry.

Old.

But clear enough.

Two newborn babies.

Two tiny faces.

Two lives beginning at the same time.

And beneath them…

A document.

A signature.

My signature.

The phone trembled in my hand.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was looking at me.

At the expression on my face.

At the fear I couldn’t hide.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Dad?””

I didn’t answer.

My eyes remained locked on the picture.

The signature was mine.

The same way I signed every paycheck.

Every school form.

Every birthday card.

Every piece of paper that carried my name.

Marcus Hayes.

But I had never seen that document before.

I knew my own handwriting.

I knew the way my M curved.

The way my H leaned slightly forward.

It was mine.

Impossible.

Victor watched me carefully.

Then he said:

“Now you understand.””

I slowly looked up.

“Understand what?””

“That your memory isn’t the truth.””

My jaw tightened.

“You forged this.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

“Then explain why my signature is there.””

He didn’t answer.

That bothered me more than a lie would have.

Because Victor Hale always had an answer.

He always spoke like he was ten steps ahead.

But now…

He hesitated.

Claire noticed too.

“Marcus,” she said quietly, “show me the picture.””

I handed her the phone.

The moment she saw it, her face changed.

She looked like she had been punched.

“No…”

“What?””

She zoomed in.

Her fingers shook.

“This document…”

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I saw this before.””

My heart dropped.

“When?””

“The night the boys were born.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe how many people had decided what I was allowed to know.

“Everyone was protecting me.””

My voice grew colder.

“Everyone except me.””

Sarah remained silent on the phone.

Then she whispered:

“Marcus…”

I looked at the phone.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the signature?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I believed her.

That somehow made it worse.

Because if Sarah didn’t know…

Who did?

I looked at Victor.

“You.””

He didn’t deny it.

“You signed the forms.””

“I don’t remember.””

“That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.””

My fists tightened.

“What did I sign?””

Victor walked closer.

“A consent agreement.””

“For what?””

“For medical treatment.””

I stared at him.

“That’s all?””

He remained quiet.

I stepped forward.

“What did I sign?””

The silence stretched.

Then Claire spoke.

“It wasn’t only medical treatment.””

Victor looked at her sharply.

“Claire.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

The wind moved through the alley.

A paper bag rolled across the ground.

Small things.

Normal things.

The world continuing while mine collapsed.

Claire took a breath.

“The document had a second section.””

“What section?””

She looked at Daniel.

“A section allowing experimental observation.””

My stomach turned.

“Observation?””

Victor interrupted.

“You’re making it sound worse than it was.””

I turned toward him.

“A newborn baby was taken from his parents.””

“He was treated.””

“He was studied.””

“He was protected.””

“He was a child.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“And children grow into adults because people make difficult decisions.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice was low.

“People like you make decisions because you think you’re smarter than everyone else.””

Victor looked at me.

“You think love makes you qualified?””

I stepped closer.

“I think being his father makes me qualified.””

For the first time, Victor looked angry.

Not annoyed.

Angry.

“You weren’t there.””

The words surprised me.

“What?””

“You weren’t there when Daniel’s condition worsened.””

Daniel looked up.

Victor continued.

“You didn’t see the machines. You didn’t see doctors fighting to keep him alive.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at Victor.

“And you did?””

“Yes.””

“And you decided that gave you ownership?””

His silence answered.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“You knew me?””

Everyone turned.

His voice was small.

“You knew me when I was a baby?””

Victor looked at him.

For a second, I saw something strange.

Not kindness.

Not guilt.

Something closer to possession.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Then why didn’t you tell me I had a family?””

Victor didn’t respond.

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me.””

My chest tightened.

Ethan immediately moved beside him.

“You’re not alone.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But I don’t even know who I am.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You’re my brother.””

Those words were simple.

But they carried more power than anything else.

Victor looked away.

Like he didn’t want to see it.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, no picture.

Just text.

*“Don’t trust Victor Hale. He didn’t act alone.””*

I frowned.

Another message appeared.

*“The person who approved the transfer was someone inside your family.””*

My blood went cold.

Inside my family.

I looked at Sarah’s name on the phone.

No.

Impossible.

Then another message arrived.

*“Look at the birth certificate.””*

I opened the attachment.

A scanned document appeared.

A birth certificate.

My hands became numb.

There were two names.

Two children.

Two birth dates.

But something was wrong.

I zoomed in.

The father’s name.

Marcus Hayes.

The mother’s name.

Sarah Hayes.

Everything looked normal.

Until I reached the bottom.

The signature section.

The witness.

My heart stopped.

Because the witness wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Claire.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had held Ethan when he was a baby.

Someone who had been in our house.

Someone who had comforted Sarah during the worst months of our marriage.

Someone I trusted completely.

I whispered the name.

“No…”

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad?””

I looked at the signature.

Then at Victor.

“Who else was involved?””

Victor didn’t answer.

But Claire did.

Her face had gone pale.

“Marcus…”

She pointed at the document.

“That person…”

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She swallowed.

Then said the name.

May you like

And the moment she said it, I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

“Your mother.””
