The Boy With My Son’s Name / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: What My Mother Took

I found my mother in her kitchen that afternoon, sitting at the table with a cup of untouched tea.

She looked older than she had the day before.

The curtains were open, and bright sunlight fell across the counter. A bowl of oranges sat beside the sink. Everything looked ordinary, painfully ordinary, as if the world had not been rearranged by a hospital record.

She looked up when I entered.

"Naomi.""

I placed the copied correction report on the table.

"Tell me what you did.""

Her eyes fell to the document.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered, "Where did you get that?""

"From the hospital archive. Patricia Green documented it, and the original is being preserved for investigation.""

My mother gripped the edge of the table.

"Then it's over.""

"No. It isn't.""

I pulled out a chair.

"Jayden remembers you meeting Loretta at the hospital. He remembers you wearing your gold watch. He remembers Loretta asking for a photograph.""

My mother covered her mouth.

"And he remembers you saying the boy I raised was never supposed to leave with me.""

She began to cry.

I waited.

For once, I wasn't going to rescue her from the silence.

Finally, she looked up.

"I didn't know which baby was yours when I first arrived.""

"Then what happened?""

She stared at the window.

"Evelyn called me before dawn. She said the hospital had discovered a serious identification error and that Marcus's brother had become involved.""

"Michael.""

She nodded.

"She said Michael had been asking questions about the babies. She was afraid he would take advantage of the confusion to claim control of the family estate.""

I felt a surge of anger.

"So you let an inheritance determine what happened to two children?""

"No!"" She struck the table with her palm.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"You keep saying that as if it changes anything.""

My mother lowered her voice.

"Evelyn told me that one of the babies had been born with a medical complication. She said the hospital had confused the identification bracelets and that the family needed time to determine which child required specialized care.""

"Was Jayden sick?""

"I don't know.""

"Was Eli?""

"I don't know, Naomi!""

Her voice broke.

"I was told things I couldn't verify. I believed people who sounded certain because I was terrified of losing you.""

I stared at her.

"You didn't lose me. You lost the truth.""

She wiped her face.

"When I saw the two babies, I asked which one was yours. Helen Ward told me the paperwork had already been corrected.""

"And you believed her?""

"Yes.""

"Even though both entries had my name?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

"What happened to the other baby?""

She took a long breath.

"Loretta said she would make sure he was safe while the hospital reviewed the records. She told me she had family who could help.""

"Jayden grew up without a stable home.""

My mother began sobbing.

"I didn't know.""

"You never asked.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

The admission hung between us.

I pulled the photograph from my folder.

It showed my mother standing beside the bassinets, her hand resting on one of them.

"Why did you take this photograph from Loretta?""

My mother stared at it.

"Because it showed the bracelets.""

"Which bracelets?""

"The original ones.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"You had the original photograph all these years?""

She nodded.

"After Loretta discovered the records had been altered, she came to me. She wanted me to help her expose what happened.""

"And you refused.""

"I was afraid.""

"So you took the photograph.""

"She gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"She said I would understand once I saw it.""

My mother reached into a drawer and removed a small wooden box.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Inside lay a photograph, a hospital visitor badge, and a folded note.

She placed the photograph in front of me.

It showed two newborns lying side by side in a double bassinet.

One wore a bracelet marked *ELI BROOKS*.

The other wore a bracelet marked *JAYDEN JAMES*.

On the back, in Loretta's handwriting, were the words:

The names were correct when I took this picture.

I stared at the image.

"Then someone changed the bracelets afterward.""

My mother nodded.

"That's what Loretta believed.""

"Who?""

She pressed her hands together.

"She suspected Michael.""

"Why?""

"Because he was the person who removed the original bracelet log.""

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped the floor.

"Then why didn't you give this to the police?""

"Because I was told Michael had died.""

I froze.

"What?""

My mother looked at me through her tears.

"Three years ago, Evelyn's lawyer told me Michael had been killed overseas. He said there was no point reopening the case because the only person who could explain the missing log was dead.""

I stared at her.

"Did you see a death certificate?""

"No.""

"Did you verify it?""

"No.""

I turned away, pressing my fingertips against my forehead.

Eight years of fear.

Eight years of decisions based on things nobody had bothered to verify.

I couldn't bear another excuse.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Naomi, we have an update.""

"What is it?""

"The hospital's compliance team located an additional record connected to the original bracelet log. It was filed under Michael Brooks's name, but the handwriting doesn't match his known signature.""

"What's on it?""

"A transfer authorization. It indicates that one newborn was released to a person who wasn't listed as a parent.""

My knees weakened.

"Who?""

Daniel paused.

"The name is partially obscured, but the first and last letters are visible. It begins with H and ends with D.""

I looked at my mother.

She had gone completely still.

"Helen Ward," I whispered.

Daniel heard me.

"That's the name we're investigating. There's another detail. The authorization contains a handwritten notation stating that the receiving party had already been approved by a family member.""

"Which family member?""

"We don't know yet.""

I looked down at the wooden box.

The visitor badge lay beside the photograph.

I picked it up.

The name printed on it was clear.

*HELEN WARD — HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR.*

But beneath it, in tiny handwriting, was another name.

*M. BROOKS.*

My mother stood.

"Naomi, please.""

I turned toward her.

"Did Helen take one of the babies?""

She shook her head desperately.

"I don't know.""

"Did she give one to Michael?""

"I don't know!""

"Did she give Jayden to Loretta?""

My mother covered her face.

"I thought Loretta had taken him to keep him safe.""

The words stopped me.

"You thought?""

"She told me she would look after him until everything was sorted out. She promised she'd bring him back when the investigation was finished.""

"Did she ever?""

My mother shook her head.

"No.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Two babies.

Two bracelets.

Two names.

And a woman who had spent eight years trying to convince herself that silence was mercy.

I gathered the documents and moved toward the door.

My mother followed.

"Naomi, where are you going?""

"To find out who authorized the transfer.""

She grabbed my wrist.

"Please don't involve the police until we understand everything.""

I pulled free.

"You had eight years to understand everything.""

I left her standing in the kitchen.

Outside, the sunlight was bright enough to hurt my eyes.

I called Daniel and told him about the visitor badge and the photograph. He said he would add them to the evidence already submitted and coordinate with the investigators.

Then I called Denise to check on the boys.

Eli answered first.

"Mom?""

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

"Did you find out?""

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

"I found more evidence.""

"Does that mean Jayden is my brother?""

I swallowed.

"It means we need to let the investigation establish the truth.""

He sighed.

"Okay.""

Then he added, "Jayden wants to talk to you.""

A moment later, Jayden's voice came through.

"Ms. Naomi?""

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"I remembered something else about Grandma.""

My heart tightened.

"What is it?""

"Before she died, she told me that the lady who took the photograph wasn't the person who changed the bracelets.""

I stopped walking.

"Then who was?""

Jayden's voice dropped to a whisper.

"She said the person who changed them was someone who knew both babies before they were born.""

I felt the world narrow around me.

"Did she tell you their name?""

"She did.""

I could hear him breathing.

"She said the person was your husband.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then Jayden added one final sentence.

"Grandma said Marcus Brooks was alive when he signed the original bracelet log.""

I stared at the photograph until my fingers began to shake.

Because if Loretta had been telling the truth, then my husband hadn't simply discovered the hospital's mistake.

He might have been involved in it.

And I was no longer certain that the man I had loved had ever told me the truth about our family.
