The Bracelet on Her Wrist / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Envelope That Could Destroy My Marriage

The moment I saw my missing bracelet on another woman's wrist, I realized my husband hadn't just been cheating on me.

He had been stealing pieces of my life.

And the most terrifying part was that he had invited the woman wearing it to celebrate eight years of our marriage.

I stood at the head of our dining table, staring at Vanessa while red wine spread across the white tablecloth.

Daniel Carter, my husband, was standing beside her.

His expression wasn't one of guilt.

It was anger.

The kind of anger a man displays when someone discovers something he believed he had hidden perfectly.

"Nia, put the bottle down," Daniel ordered.

I slowly placed it on the table.

"Tell me where she got that bracelet.""

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

Vanessa pulled her sleeve over her wrist.

"I already told you. It was a gift.""

"From whom?""

She looked at Daniel.

He didn't answer.

I smiled, although my throat felt painfully tight.

"That's what I thought.""

Mr. Bennett, Daniel's former business partner, remained near the doorway. The sealed envelope bearing my name sat between the wineglass and the anniversary cake.

Daniel reached for it.

I grabbed it first.

"Don't," he warned.

I looked at his hand.

"Are you going to tell me what I'm allowed to touch in my own house now?""

"Nia, you're emotional. You don't understand what's happening.""

"Then explain it.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Daniel, you told me she wouldn't be here.""

I turned toward her.

"Excuse me?""

She looked uncomfortable for the first time that evening.

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

"No," she snapped.

"I'm tired of being treated like I'm the problem.""

I almost laughed.

The woman wearing my bracelet was complaining about being treated unfairly in my dining room.

Mr. Bennett cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should stop pretending this is a misunderstanding.""

Daniel pointed toward the door.

"Get out of my house.""

"Gladly. But not before she sees what's inside that envelope.""

I looked down at it.

My fingers trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside were several printed photographs, copies of bank transfers, and a document with a red stamp across the top.

I recognized the first photograph immediately.

It showed Daniel standing outside a jewelry store six months earlier.

He was holding a small velvet box.

The same velvet box that had once held my bracelet.

The second photograph showed him meeting Vanessa outside a luxury hotel.

The third made my stomach turn.

Daniel was standing beside a man I had never seen before, handing him a thick folder.

"What's this?"" I whispered.

Mr. Bennett pulled out a chair.

"Please sit down, Mrs. Carter.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Don't listen to him. He's been trying to destroy me for years.""

Mr. Bennett didn't even look at him.

"Your husband withdrew nearly four hundred thousand dollars from the company account over eleven months. He moved the money through three separate businesses before it disappeared.""

I stared at the bank statements.

"Four hundred thousand?""

"Three hundred and eighty-seven thousand, to be exact.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Those were legitimate business expenses.""

"Then why did you use your wife's identity to authorize the transfers?""

My eyes lifted.

"What?""

Daniel stepped closer.

"That's not what happened.""

Mr. Bennett placed another document in front of me.

It contained my full legal name, my signature, and the account number of a savings account I had opened before marrying Daniel.

Except I had never authorized those transfers.

I knew my signature.

I also knew the tiny loop I always made at the end of the letter C.

The signature on that document had it.

Someone had copied it.

"Daniel," I whispered.

"Did you forge my signature?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Nia, listen to me. I was protecting our family.""

"From what?""

"The company was in trouble.""

"So you stole money using my name?""

"I borrowed it.""

"Without asking me?""

He raised his voice.

"Because you wouldn't have understood!""

The room fell silent.

Vanessa looked at him.

Mr. Bennett slowly removed his glasses.

And I realized that Daniel hadn't even bothered to deny it.

I turned another page.

There was a document titled Beneficial Ownership Declaration.

My name appeared beside a company I had never heard of.

The registered owner was listed as Nia Carter.

The director was Daniel.

And the company had received the money that had disappeared from his business.

"What's this company?"" I asked.

Mr. Bennett answered carefully.

"A shell company. Your husband created it using your identity.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why?""

He moved closer and lowered his voice.

"Because I was going to explain everything once the situation was settled.""

"Settled how?""

He didn't answer.

Mr. Bennett did.

"By transferring the remaining assets into your name and leaving you responsible for the missing funds.""

My knees nearly gave way.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"He's lying.""

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

"Nia, please.""

I stared at the man I had shared a bed with for eight years.

The man who had held my hand during my mother's funeral.

The man who had promised to protect me.

"You were going to let me take the blame?""

His expression hardened.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed to keep this family together.""

"What family, Daniel? We don't even have children.""

Vanessa looked away.

That small movement caught my attention.

I turned toward her.

"Does she know?""

Daniel's face changed.

"Don't involve her.""

I stared at Vanessa's bracelet.

Then at the photographs.

Then at the document with my forged signature.

"How long have you been together?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Since last November.""

"While you were telling me the company was struggling?""

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough.""

But Mr. Bennett wasn't finished.

He pulled one final photograph from the envelope.

It showed Daniel entering our house through the garage at 2:13 a.m. on a Tuesday.

He was carrying a black leather briefcase.

I remembered that night.

He had told me he was working late.

Mr. Bennett placed the photograph beside the bank statements.

"That's the night he removed the original ownership documents from your bedroom safe.""

My stomach tightened.

"What ownership documents?""

Mr. Bennett looked directly at me.

"The documents proving that this house isn't legally owned by your husband.""

I blinked.

"What?""

Daniel went completely still.

Mr. Bennett leaned forward.

"Mrs. Carter, there's something you need to know about the house you've been living in for eight years.""

May you like

And then he said the one thing that made Daniel's face turn white.

"Your husband has never owned it.""
