Chapter 8: The Truth About That Night
Marcus stared at the message.
For several seconds, he didn’t blink.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t even breathe normally.
The words on the screen had nothing to do with Adrian.
Nothing to do with Jordan.
Nothing to do with the inheritance.
They were about something much older.
Something I had never wanted to discuss.
*Ask your mother what happened the night your father died.*
My heart sank.
Because I knew exactly what night Adrian was talking about.
The night I lost my husband.
The night I lost a part of myself.
The night I promised Daniel I would protect our son.
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes from the phone.
He looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with suspicion.
With confusion.
“Mom.””
My hands tightened around the paper bag.
“Marcus…”
“What happened that night?””
The church went silent.
Even Adrian stopped smiling.
That told me something.
He knew enough to cause damage.
But maybe he didn’t know everything.
Attorney Harris looked at me carefully.
“Evelyn.””
I closed my eyes.
For ten years, I had carried this secret.
Not because I wanted to hide the truth.
Because I thought I was protecting Marcus.
A mother’s instinct is strange.
Even when your child hurts you, you still search for ways to save them.
But maybe Daniel was right.
Maybe hiding pain only gives it more power.
I looked at my son.
“Your father didn’t die the way you think.””
Marcus froze.
“What does that mean?””
Jordan stepped closer.
Adrian watched quietly.
I took a deep breath.
“Daniel was not supposed to be driving that night.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“He was supposed to come home early.””
My voice became softer.
“He called me before he left.””
I remembered every detail.
The sound of his voice.
The background noise.
The way he said my name.
“Evelyn, I need to talk to you when I get home.””
Those were his last words.
I looked down.
“He sounded worried.””
Marcus swallowed.
“About what?””
I looked at Adrian.
And for the first time that day, Adrian’s confidence disappeared.
“About you.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Me?””
I nodded.
“Your father had discovered something.””
Attorney Harris became still.
“You never told me that.””
“I couldn’t.””
The lawyer looked at me.
“Why?””
I looked at my son.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
Marcus shook his head.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Knew what?””
I took a breath.
“The night he died, he was going to meet someone.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying the name made everything real.
“Adrian.””
The church exploded with whispers.
Adrian immediately laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
But his voice was different.
Less confident.
I continued.
“Daniel found documents showing that someone had been moving money from the company.””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He wanted to confront him.””
Attorney Harris stepped forward.
“You’re saying Daniel knew about the fraud before the accident?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked overwhelmed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The question broke my heart.
Because I had asked myself the same thing every day.
“Because after your father died, you were already falling apart.””
Marcus looked away.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
My voice trembled.
“You stopped sleeping. You stopped eating. You stopped talking to people.””
I looked at him.
“You blamed yourself for not being there.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“And then Adrian came.””
Silence.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“You helped me.””
Adrian said nothing.
I continued.
“You told Marcus that his father’s death was a terrible accident.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“It was.””
I looked at him.
“Was it?””
The question stayed between us.
Adrian smiled slightly.
“You’re making accusations without proof.””
Attorney Harris stepped forward.
“Actually…”
He opened his folder.
“We may have proof.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
The lawyer removed another document.
“Daniel left instructions regarding his investigation.””
Marcus stared.
“How many things did my father leave?””
Attorney Harris looked at him.
“Enough.””
He opened the document.
“Your father wrote that if Adrian Cole appeared before the truth was revealed, I was to release this.””
Adrian’s face went pale.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“What is it?””
Attorney Harris looked at him.
“A copy of Daniel Johnson’s final investigation notes.””
The church was completely silent.
The lawyer read.
“Adrian Cole was not only involved in the fraudulent transfer of company assets. He also attempted to pressure Daniel Johnson into silence.””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“He’s lying.””
Attorney Harris continued.
“Daniel recorded a conversation.””
Everyone stopped.
Marcus whispered:
“A recording?””
I nodded.
“Your father always believed the truth should survive, even when people don’t.””
Attorney Harris took out a small device.
He pressed a button.
Static filled the church.
Then a voice.
Daniel.
My knees almost gave out.
After all these years.
After all the silence.
I heard my husband again.
“Adrian, this is your last chance to tell the truth.””
A second voice responded.
Adrian.
Younger.
But unmistakable.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“I understand perfectly.””
A pause.
“You manipulated Marcus.””
Adrian laughed.
“He was easy to manipulate.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The words hurt.
Daniel continued.
“You destroyed Jordan’s life.””
Another laugh.
“Jordan was weak.””
Jordan looked down.
My hands shook.
Then Daniel said:
“And you think Marcus will stay loyal to you?””
Adrian replied:
“He doesn’t need to know everything.””
A long silence.
Then Daniel’s voice.
“What happens if I tell him?””
Adrian answered quietly.
“Then he loses everything.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Adrian.
Because the truth had finally entered the room.
Marcus looked at him.
“You threatened my father.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“You knew.””
Still nothing.
“You knew he was investigating.””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Your father was too stubborn.””
The words were enough.
Marcus stepped backward.
“You let me believe…”
His voice broke.
“You let me believe Jordan betrayed me.””
Adrian shrugged.
“You needed someone to blame.””
Marcus’s eyes filled with anger.
“You ruined my life.””
Adrian laughed.
“No.””
He pointed at him.
“I gave you the life you wanted.””
Marcus froze.
Adrian continued.
“You wanted power.””
“You wanted respect.””
“You wanted people to look at you differently.””
He smiled.
“I just helped you get there.””
Marcus looked destroyed.
Because the worst part was…
Adrian wasn’t completely wrong.
He had manipulated Marcus.
But Marcus had made choices.
And that was the truth he had to live with.
Vanessa slowly removed her engagement ring.
Marcus looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know who I’m standing next to anymore.””
The words hurt him more than anything else.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You’ve been explaining for years.””
She placed the ring in his hand.
“I need to leave.””
Marcus didn’t stop her.
Maybe because he knew he had no right.
After Vanessa walked away, the church felt empty.
Even with dozens of people inside.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“You’re really going to let this destroy you?””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
Adrian smiled.
“Good.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I’m going to fix what I destroyed.””
The smile disappeared.
Marcus turned toward Jordan.
“I can’t undo ten years.””
Jordan said nothing.
“I can’t give you back what I took.””
A pause.
“But I can tell the truth.””
Jordan studied him.
Then quietly said:
“That’s a start.””
Attorney Harris closed the folder.
“The inheritance condition requires one more thing.””
Marcus looked exhausted.
“What now?””
The lawyer handed him another envelope.
“This was delivered this morning.””
Marcus frowned.
“From who?””
Attorney Harris looked at the envelope.
“Your father.””
Marcus opened it slowly.
Inside was one final note.
Only one sentence.
He read it aloud.
“If you have finally learned the truth, then you are ready to learn the last secret.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What last secret?””
Attorney Harris turned the envelope over.
Something had fallen out.
A small photograph.
Marcus picked it up.
His face changed instantly.
Because the picture showed Daniel…
standing beside someone Marcus had never expected to see.
Someone who should not have been part of his father’s final days.
Someone whose name made Marcus whisper:
“No…”
I looked at the photograph.
And my heart stopped.
Because I knew exactly who it was.
May you like
And I knew the truth was not finished.
It was only beginning.
