The Bride Knew the Waitress / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Truth at the Altar

Malcolm reached the ballroom with the broken silver charm clenched inside his fist.

Every chandelier was dark.

Only the emergency lights along the walls remained, painting the white flowers and crystal tables in a dim red glow.

“Malcolm!””

Tasha's voice came from the staircase behind him.

He turned.

She was crying.

Lena stood beside her.

Marcus was nowhere to be seen.

Malcolm looked toward the altar.

Nia was standing there.

Still wearing her black-and-white uniform.

Still wearing the same frightened expression she had worn earlier.

But now there was something different in her eyes.

Resolve.

She raised one hand.

“Come alone.””

Malcolm looked behind him.

Tasha stopped at the edge of the ballroom.

Lena stayed beside her.

Malcolm slowly walked forward.

The wedding aisle stretched between them.

White rose petals covered the floor.

His wedding cake stood untouched near the dance floor.

A champagne glass rolled across a table and fell.

It shattered.

Nia watched him approach.

“You brought it?””

Malcolm opened his hand.

The broken silver charm caught the emergency light.

“Yes.””

Nia's eyes filled with tears.

“Put it on the altar.””

He did.

Then he looked at her.

“Where's my mother?””

Nia swallowed.

“She’s alive.””

“Where?””

“She’s safe.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“I know.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“You told me she came to find you.””

“She did.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to know if I was ready.””

“For what?””

Nia looked toward Lena.

“For her.””

Malcolm turned.

Lena was crying.

Nia continued.

“Your mother knew tonight would happen.””

Malcolm stared.

“She planned this?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Nia looked toward the ballroom doors.

“Marcus.””

Malcolm's jaw tightened.

“Where is he?””

“Gone.””

“Gone?””

“He never wanted your mother.””

“What did he want?””

“The records.””

Malcolm looked at the charm.

“What records?””

Nia slowly reached beneath her uniform collar.

She pulled out a tiny metal key.

“This.””

Malcolm stared at it.

“The key?””

“It opens a safety box.””

“Where?””

“Your mother's house.””

Tasha suddenly shouted from across the room.

“No!””

Everyone turned.

Tasha stepped forward.

“Nia, stop.””

Nia's expression hardened.

“You had twelve years.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

Malcolm looked between them.

“Tasha, come here.””

She approached slowly.

Malcolm pointed toward the charm.

“You said Lena gave this to you.””

“She did.””

“You said you didn't know where Lena went.””

“I didn't.””

“You said my father was involved.””

“He was.””

“You said you were threatened.””

“I was.””

“Then why did Nia say you were protecting yourself?””

Tasha looked at Nia.

“Because she doesn't know what happened after you disappeared.””

Nia's voice trembled.

“I know enough.””

“No,” Tasha whispered.

“You don't.””

Malcolm stepped between them.

“Then tell me.””

Tasha looked at Lena.

Lena nodded.

Tasha finally spoke.

“The night Lena disappeared, your mother gave me the necklace.””

Malcolm stared.

“Why?””

“She told me to keep it.””

“Why?””

“She said if Lena ever came back, the necklace would prove who she was.””

Lena shook her head.

“That isn't what happened.””

Tasha looked at her.

“What?””

“You weren't supposed to keep it.””

Lena reached into her pocket.

She pulled out an old photograph.

It showed three young women standing outside a house.

Lena.

Tasha.

And a third woman.

Nia.

Malcolm stared at the picture.

Nia lowered her eyes.

“You knew each other.””

Nia nodded.

“We were friends.””

Tasha whispered, “More than friends.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Nia answered.

“We grew up together.””

Malcolm looked at Lena.

“You knew Nia?””

“Yes.””

“You trusted her?””

Lena nodded.

“She saved my life.””

Malcolm looked back at Nia.

“Then why did you hide from me?””

“Because your mother asked me to.””

“Why?””

Nia's eyes filled.

“Because she was afraid you would do exactly what you did tonight.””

“What?””

“Try to fix everything yourself.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“You disappeared into my wedding and expected me to understand?””

“I didn't come for your wedding.””

“Then why were you here?””

Nia looked at Tasha.

“I came because she invited me.””

Malcolm turned sharply.

“Tasha?””

Tasha closed her eyes.

“I needed to know if Nia had found Lena.””

Malcolm stared.

“You didn't know Lena was alive?””

“I suspected.””

Lena gave a bitter laugh.

“You knew.””

Tasha began crying.

“I knew she was alive six years ago.””

Malcolm went still.

“Six years?””

“I found her.””

“You found her six years ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“She begged me not to.””

Lena stepped forward.

“I was afraid Marcus would find me.””

Malcolm's anger softened into disbelief.

“Why didn't you come home?””

Lena looked at him.

“Because Dad wasn't the only person involved.””

Malcolm waited.

Lena pointed toward Tasha.

“She was.””

Tasha nodded through her tears.

“I helped your father hide the accounts.””

Malcolm stared.

“You said you only found them.””

“I lied.””

The confession seemed to empty the room.

Tasha continued.

“I helped him move money before I understood what he was doing. When I tried to leave, he threatened my family. Then Lena discovered the records.””

Lena said quietly, “And Tasha chose me.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“What?””

“She could have escaped.””

Tasha shook her head.

“I couldn't leave you behind.””

Lena continued.

“She stayed. She gave Marcus false information. She took the necklace so they would believe I had left the country.””

Malcolm looked at Tasha.

“You protected her.””

“Yes.””

“All these years?””

“Yes.””

“Even after marrying me?””

Tasha nodded.

“I loved you.””

Malcolm's eyes filled with tears.

“But you built our marriage on a lie.””

“I know.””

He looked down.

The silver charm sat on the altar between them.

Then Nia spoke.

“There is one thing neither of them told you.””

Malcolm looked up.

“What?””

Nia reached into her pocket.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“This belonged to your mother.””

Malcolm opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

He read silently.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”” Lena asked.

Malcolm couldn't answer.

He handed the letter to her.

Lena read it.

Then began sobbing.

“What?””

Malcolm took the letter back.

The final paragraph was written in his mother's hand:

*Malcolm, if Lena ever comes home, tell her I never stopped looking for her. But if Nia comes with her, tell Nia the truth: I knew who she was from the beginning.*

Malcolm frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Nia looked at him.

“It means your mother knew my real name.””

Malcolm stared.

“Nia Johnson is your real name?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Tasha whispered, “Nia…”

Nia took a breath.

“My name is Naomi Carter.””

Malcolm's eyes widened.

“And Carter was your mother's maiden name?””

Naomi nodded.

“She was my aunt.””

Silence.

Lena covered her mouth.

Malcolm finally understood.

The scar.

The necklace.

The photograph.

The secrecy.

Nia hadn't been pretending to be his sister.

She had been protecting her.

Naomi stepped toward the altar.

“Your mother raised me after my parents died. When Lena disappeared, she asked me to help keep her hidden.””

Malcolm looked at Lena.

“And you stayed hidden because of Marcus.””

“Yes.””

“And Tasha knew.””

“Yes.””

He looked at Tasha.

She nodded.

“I thought if I stayed close to you, I could protect you too.””

Malcolm let out a shaky breath.

For twelve years, he had believed his sister had been stolen from him.

The truth was different.

She had been hidden.

Protected.

Waiting.

And the woman he had almost hated had spent twelve years carrying a secret that had nearly destroyed her.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

His mother walked in.

Alive.

Unbound.

She stopped when she saw him.

“Malcolm.””

He ran to her.

She caught him in her arms.

He cried against her shoulder like the little boy he had once been.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

His mother held him tighter.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Marcus?””

“No.””

She pulled back.

“Of your father.””

Malcolm stared.

“He died.””

“I know.””

She touched his face.

“But before he died, he told me something.””

“What?””

His mother looked toward Lena.

Then Naomi.

Then Tasha.

“He said if you ever found out the truth, you would discover that the person you thought was missing…”

She paused.

“…was never the person you should have been looking for.””

Malcolm frowned.

“Then who was I supposed to find?””

His mother looked at Tasha.

Tasha began to cry.

And Malcolm suddenly understood why his bride had begged him, from the beginning, not to ask Nia her name.

Because the secret hadn't been about who Nia was.

It had been about *who Tasha had been protecting all along.*

Tasha walked to the altar.

She picked up the broken silver charm.

Then she placed it in Malcolm's hand.

“I was protecting your sister,” she whispered.

Malcolm looked at Lena.

Lena smiled through her tears.

“And I was protecting her.””

Naomi nodded.

“And your mother was protecting all of us.””

The wedding guests watched in silence.

No one applauded.

No one spoke.

Malcolm looked at the woman in the wedding dress standing before him.

The woman he had loved.

The woman who had lied.

The woman who had protected his family.

He reached for her hand.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But a beginning.

Outside the ballroom, sirens suddenly echoed in the distance.

Marcus had been found.

Malcolm squeezed Tasha's hand once.

Then he looked at his sister.

For the first time in twelve years, Lena stepped into his arms.

And as the wedding music slowly began again, Malcolm realized the strangest truth of all:

May you like

The woman he thought had ruined his wedding…

had secretly spent twelve years helping bring his family home.
