Chapter 11: The Bloodline Nobody Claimed

Daniel read the laboratory report three times before he could accept what it said.

The genetic comparison was unequivocal.

Thomas Hayes was not his biological father.

Eleanor Hayes was his biological mother.

The report listed an unidentified male donor as the biological father, with a reference to a confidential record held in the Hayes family vault.

Daniel placed the paper on the bedside table.

Thomas stared at the ceiling.

“Say something,” Daniel demanded.

His father closed his eyes.

“I don't know where to begin.””

“Try with the part where you let me believe you were my father for thirty-four years.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I raised you as my son.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“No,” Thomas whispered.

“It isn't.””

Detective Bennett had ordered additional officers to secure the corridor. She stood near the door, listening while Daniel questioned Thomas.

“Who was my biological father?””

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What?””

“Your grandfather had a relationship with Eleanor before she married me. She became pregnant, but the family concealed the truth. When you were born, my father demanded that I claim you as my own.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“You're telling me I'm my own grandfather's son?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I'm telling you that your biological father was Edward Hayes.””

Daniel went completely still.

Edward.

The man who had just climbed through the hospital window.

The man who looked like him.

The man who claimed to be his brother.

Thomas continued before Daniel could speak.

“My father had two sons with two different women. Edward was the older one. I was the younger.

Eleanor had a relationship with Edward before she married me. When she became pregnant, my father arranged for the records to be altered.””

Daniel gripped the bedrail.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to keep control of the company. He believed Edward was unstable and unfit to inherit. He wanted the child to be raised within the family without revealing the scandal.””

“So you agreed to raise another man's child?””

“I loved Eleanor. I loved you. I didn't care about the biology.””

“But you cared enough to hide it.””

Thomas's voice broke.

“I thought the truth would destroy you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“The truth is destroying me now.””

He turned away and stared through the window at the pale morning sky.

His entire life had been built around a family name that had never truly belonged to him.

He had inherited a company from a man who wasn't his father.

He had nearly married a woman who was his cousin.

And the man who had raised him had spent years protecting a secret that had shaped every decision in his life.

“Who is Marcus?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas hesitated.

“Your mother's records may explain that better than I can.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I didn't know Marcus was involved until recently. I believed Edward had disappeared permanently. I thought the old records were destroyed.””

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, we need to understand the connection between Edward and the shooting.””

Thomas nodded weakly.

“Edward and Marcus were working together. But I don't believe Edward wanted me dead.””

“Then who fired the gun?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas looked at the door.

“Marcus.””

“Why?””

“Because he believes he's entitled to the inheritance. Edward promised him a share of the trust, but the original documents contain a clause that would prevent Marcus from claiming anything if he participated in fraud or violence.””

Daniel remembered the email.

Operation Second Son.

“Marcus knew about the clause?””

“Yes.””

“And he still went ahead with the plan?””

Thomas nodded.

“He believed he could destroy the evidence and force you to relinquish your shares before anyone discovered his identity.””

Daniel sat down heavily.

The door opened.

Grace entered carrying a small wooden box.

“I found this in your mother's bedroom,” she said.

Daniel stared at it.

“What's inside?””

“Letters. She hid them beneath the false bottom of her jewelry drawer.””

Grace placed the box on the table and lifted the lid.

Inside were dozens of envelopes, each labeled with a date. Some were addressed to Thomas. Others bore the names of people Daniel had never heard of.

One envelope had his name written across the front.

*For Daniel, when the truth can no longer be hidden.*

His hands trembled as he opened it.

My darling boy,

If you are reading this, then the secrets I carried have finally reached you. I wish I could have told you the truth while I was alive, but I was afraid of what would happen if I revealed it too soon.

Thomas is not your biological father, but he is the man who chose to love you. Never allow the truth of your birth to erase the truth of the life he gave you.

Daniel stopped reading.

His eyes blurred.

Your biological father is Edward Hayes. He is your grandfather's eldest son, and he was taken from the family before he could claim his inheritance.

I loved Edward once, before I understood the damage his father's ambition had done to him. When I discovered I was pregnant, Edward disappeared. I later learned that your grandfather had arranged for him to be sent overseas under another identity.

Thomas married me knowing the truth. He chose to raise you as his own because he believed love mattered more than blood.

Daniel lowered the letter.

Thomas was watching him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

“You gave me a false one.””

Thomas's expression crumpled.

“I gave you the only life I knew how to protect.””

Daniel looked back at the letter.

The next paragraph was written in a different ink.

There is one more truth you must understand. Edward did not disappear alone. Before he left, he had a child with Margaret Bell. That child was taken from her at birth and placed with a family connected to Richard Whitmore.

Daniel's pulse quickened.

He looked at Thomas.

“Marcus.””

Thomas nodded.

“Marcus is Edward's son.””

Daniel stared at the letter.

“Then Marcus and I are half-brothers.””

“Yes.””

“And Victoria?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Victoria is Margaret's daughter from a later relationship. Richard adopted her after Margaret died.””

Daniel felt sick.

“So Victoria and Marcus are siblings?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not by blood. Marcus is Edward's son. Victoria was raised by Richard, but her biological father was a different man.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why did Edward say she was his daughter?””

“Because he believed Margaret had given birth to twins. One child was taken by Richard. The other was placed with a foster family.””

Grace leaned forward.

“Your mother's letter says the same thing.””

She pointed to the final page.

Daniel read it aloud.

“The second child was registered under the name Victoria Whitmore. But the name was not hers at birth. The child was a boy.”

He stopped.

A boy.

He looked at Grace.

“What does that mean?””

Grace turned over the last document in the box.

It was a medical record from a private clinic, dated thirty-four years earlier.

The patient was Margaret Bell.

The record listed two newborn boys.

One had been registered as Marcus Reed.

The other had been registered as Daniel Hayes.

Daniel stared at the names.

Then he saw the handwritten note beside his own.

*Identity transferred by order of Richard Whitmore.*

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Are you saying Marcus and I were switched at birth?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Your mother believed that was what happened.””

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“Then who was I supposed to be?””

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“You were supposed to be Marcus.””

Daniel sank into the chair.

He was not the son of Thomas Hayes.

He was not the child his grandfather had intended to inherit the company.

He was a boy who had been given another child's identity before he was old enough to know his own name.

And Marcus, the friend who had spent years beside him, had been the child who was supposed to grow up in the Hayes mansion.

The door opened again.

Detective Bennett entered holding a phone.

“Mr. Hayes, we've located Marcus.””

Daniel stood.

“Where?””

“At the courthouse. He's attempting to file an emergency petition to freeze your company's assets.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He can't do that.””

“He claims to be the rightful heir to the Hayes estate.””

Thomas tried to sit up.

“He has the original birth records.””

Detective Bennett nodded.

“And he has a witness.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Victoria Whitmore.””

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Victoria's voice was trembling.

“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully. Marcus has the original documents, and he's about to tell the world who you really are.””

“Why are you helping him?””

“Because he has something I need.””

“What?””

A long silence followed.

Then Victoria whispered, “The truth about my mother.””

Before Daniel could respond, she added one final sentence.

“And Daniel, if you want to survive what happens next, you need to know that Marcus isn't the only person who was switched at birth.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Grace.

She was staring at the last page of Eleanor's letter.

Her face had gone completely white.

“What is it?”” he asked.

Grace slowly turned the paper toward him.

May you like

At the bottom, in his mother's handwriting, were seven words.

*The third child was never supposed to live.*
