Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Lost Years
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because everyone was afraid of the same question.
The question hanging in the air between Marcus and Calvin.
*Was Calvin the person who took him?*
Marcus stared at the man who had stood beside him moments earlier.
The man who had carried the other half of his compass.
The man who had claimed to be the person his father trusted.
The man who had spent decades living with the memory of that night.
Calvin looked older than he had five minutes ago.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like thirty-five years of guilt had finally caught up with him.
Marcus slowly lowered the letter.
“Is it true?””
Calvin didn’t answer.
Marcus’s voice became sharper.
“Is it true, Calvin?””
The old man looked at him.
And the hesitation was enough.
Marcus stepped back.
Darnell immediately noticed.
“Marcus…”
Marcus raised a hand.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on Calvin.
“I need him to answer.””
The parking lot felt frozen.
Even the highway noise seemed distant.
Calvin took a slow breath.
“I didn’t take you.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why does she think you did?””
Calvin looked at Rachel.
Rachel didn’t look away.
“Because that’s what the evidence showed.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Evidence?””
Rachel nodded.
“Your medical records disappeared.””
She opened the folder again.
“The security footage from the hospital was erased.””
Marcus listened.
“Your name was removed from the patient database.””
His chest tightened.
“And the only person seen leaving your room that night…”
She looked at Calvin.
“…was him.””
The words landed heavily.
The bikers shifted.
Darnell looked at Calvin differently now.
Marcus felt something breaking inside him.
Not because he believed Rachel completely.
But because he couldn’t ignore what she was saying.
“Calvin.””
The old man looked down.
“Tell me.””
Calvin’s voice was quiet.
“I went to the hospital.””
Marcus waited.
“Why?””
“Because your father called me.””
Marcus frowned.
“When?””
“The night of the crash.””
Calvin looked toward the road.
“James knew something was wrong.””
Rachel crossed her arms.
“He told you to take Marcus.””
Calvin nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt confused.
“Then why did you say you failed to protect me?””
Calvin closed his eyes.
“Because I did.””
The answer came without hesitation.
Marcus waited.
Calvin continued.
“I got you out of that hospital.””
A silence followed.
Marcus’s heart sank.
“But you said you didn’t take me.””
“I didn’t.””
Calvin looked at him.
“Not the way you think.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
Calvin stepped closer.
“You were injured. Confused. Scared.””
His voice became softer.
“You were seven years old and you kept asking for your mother.””
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Marcus looked away.
A memory flashed.
A little boy crying.
A woman’s voice.
A hand holding his.
Calvin continued.
“I took you because your father begged me.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
Marcus stared.
“Then what happened?””
Calvin’s face tightened.
“I made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I trusted someone.””
The answer was immediate.
Marcus looked at Victor.
But Calvin shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at someone else.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Rachel.
Marcus felt confused.
“Rachel?””
Rachel’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Pain.
Calvin looked at her.
“I thought she was helping.””
Rachel whispered:
“Calvin…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent thirty-five years believing you were the reason I lost him.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel took a step back.
“I was trying to protect him.””
Calvin laughed bitterly.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words carried more pain than anger.
Marcus looked at Rachel.
“What did you do?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Marcus’s patience disappeared.
“What did you do?””
Rachel finally spoke.
“I changed your records.””
Everyone went silent.
Marcus stared.
“You what?””
Rachel looked down.
“I removed your name from the system.””
His expression hardened.
“Why?””
“Because they were searching.””
“Who?””
Rachel looked at Victor.
Victor shook his head.
“Not me.””
Rachel nodded.
“Not Victor.””
Marcus felt lost.
“Then who?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“The people who wanted James Hayes gone.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
The words echoed in his mind.
*I found the person who took everything from us.*
Rachel continued.
“Your father discovered something dangerous.””
Marcus nodded.
“You said that.””
“But what nobody knew was that he also found out who was behind it.””
She looked at him.
“He knew names.””
Marcus looked at Calvin.
“And that’s why he trusted you?””
Calvin nodded.
“He gave me Marcus and told me to disappear.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Why didn’t you?””
The question hurt.
Calvin looked at him.
“I tried.””
A pause.
“But someone found us.””
The memory seemed painful.
“We were leaving the city. I had a new identity prepared. A place where nobody could find you.””
Marcus listened.
“Then what?””
Calvin looked at his hands.
“Someone followed us.””
The old man’s voice became quieter.
“There was an accident.””
Marcus shook his head.
“The crash.””
“Yes.””
“And you woke up three days later.””
Calvin nodded.
“But you weren’t there.””
Marcus felt a cold feeling.
“Someone took me.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at Victor.
“Do you know?””
Victor remained silent.
That silence bothered him.
“Victor.””
The older man looked at Marcus.
“I know who ordered it.””
Marcus waited.
“Who?””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“The person who destroyed your family.””
“Name.””
Victor looked around.
Then at Eleanor.
“I don’t think you understand what you’re asking.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I spent thirty-five years not knowing my own name.””
His voice broke slightly.
“I deserve the answer.””
Victor looked at him.
Then said:
“Your grandfather.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus stared.
“My grandfather?””
Victor nodded.
“James’s father.””
The words felt impossible.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Eleanor looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
“Eleanor.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt betrayed.
“How many people knew?””
Nobody spoke.
He laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“My entire life was built on secrets.””
Rachel looked at him sadly.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He backed away.
“I need everyone to stop saying my name like they know me.””
The sentence hurt everyone.
Because they did know him.
But they had never told him.
Marcus looked at the letter again.
His father’s handwriting.
The only honest thing he had found all day.
He folded it carefully.
Then looked at Calvin.
“One question.””
Calvin nodded.
“Ask.””
Marcus stared into his eyes.
“When you found me…”
A pause.
“Did you know who I really was?””
Calvin didn’t answer immediately.
And Marcus already knew.
The silence was enough.
“You did.””
Calvin whispered:
“Yes.””
Marcus looked away.
The truth hurt.
Not because Calvin knew.
Because Calvin stayed.
“You knew my parents.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my name.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I spent my whole life wondering where I came from.””
Calvin closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
The old man’s voice broke.
“Because the people who took you never stopped looking.””
Marcus stared.
“And you thought hiding the truth would protect me?””
“Yes.””
A tear rolled down Calvin’s cheek.
“I thought if you never knew who you were…”
He swallowed.
“…they could never find you.””
Marcus looked at him.
For a moment, he saw not a liar.
Not a stranger.
Just an old man who had carried a terrible decision for decades.
But before he could respond, Victor suddenly looked toward the highway.
His face changed.
“What?””
Marcus followed his gaze.
A motorcycle had stopped near the entrance of the diner.
One person sat on it.
Wearing a black helmet.
Watching them.
Victor’s voice became low.
“We need to leave.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“Why?””
Victor looked at the rider.
“Because that person shouldn’t be here.””
The rider slowly removed the helmet.
Everyone froze.
Even Victor.
Even Calvin.
Because the person underneath wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone Marcus had seen before.
Someone from his childhood.
Someone who had been missing for thirty-five years.
Eleanor whispered the name.
And Marcus felt the ground disappear beneath him.
“James…”
The man looked directly at Marcus.
May you like
Then said:
“You’re not supposed to know the truth yet.””
