Chapter 12: The Daughter He Never Abandoned
Charlotte sat down slowly.
She kept staring at the DNA report.
"Richard told me my mother had an affair," she whispered.
"He said Daniel was just helping her.""
I pulled out the chair beside her.
"Maybe Richard lied.""
She shook her head.
"Why would he?""
I looked at the report.
Because Richard had spent decades building his life around controlling the truth.
He had told my mother I was his son.
He had told Charlotte that Daniel wasn't her father.
He had told me I was an only child.
And somehow, he had convinced all of us that the same man who loved us was the one who had abandoned us.
"Charlotte, did Dad ever tell you anything about your mother?""
She nodded.
"He said she died when I was very young.""
"Do you remember her?""
"No. Richard raised me.""
She paused.
"At least, that's what I believed.""
I looked at Detective Bennett.
"Can we verify the DNA report?""
"Absolutely. We'll arrange independent testing.""
Charlotte stood and walked toward the window.
"I spent my whole life thinking I was unwanted.""
I followed her.
"You're not.""
She looked at me.
"How can you know?""
I thought about my father.
The man who had taught me to drive.
The man who had kept an old blue sedan because it reminded him of his own father.
The man who had written letters for children he might never see again.
"Because I knew Daniel Hayes.""
Charlotte's eyes filled.
"He came to see me three weeks before he died.""
"What did he say?""
She reached into her handbag and removed a folded letter.
"He gave me this.""
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
It was my father's.
She handed it to me.
I unfolded the paper.
My dear Charlotte,
There are things I should have told you much earlier. Things I regret keeping from you.
You are not an accident. You are not a secret I wanted to forget.
You are my daughter.
I was there when you were born. I held you before anyone else could. I remember your tiny fingers wrapping around mine.
I wanted to raise you beside your brother, but there were people who believed our family was something they could divide and sell.
I failed to protect you both from that.
If Ethan ever finds you, tell him that I loved you equally.
And tell him the truth about the blue car.
I stopped reading.
I looked at Charlotte.
"What truth?""
She wiped her eyes.
"I don't know.""
I read the final paragraph.
The car contains something I couldn't trust anyone else to keep safe.
I felt my heart begin to race.
The blue sedan.
My father's old blue sedan.
The one I had driven to Tiana's birthday dinner.
The one everyone had laughed at.
I looked at Charlotte.
"Dad left something in the car.""
She nodded.
"That's what he told me.""
I immediately called the valet service.
They had transported the black luxury sedan to my apartment the previous night, but the old blue sedan was still parked in my building's garage.
I called the building manager.
"Is my blue car still there?""
"Yes, Mr. Hayes.""
"Has anyone touched it?""
There was a pause.
"Actually, someone came by this morning asking for access.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
"He said he was from your father's old company.""
"Did you let him in?""
"No. I asked for identification.""
"What happened?""
"He left.""
I looked at Detective Bennett.
"Someone is trying to get into my car.""
She immediately called for backup.
We arrived at my apartment building forty minutes later.
The garage was quiet.
My blue sedan sat in its usual parking space.
The faded paint looked even older beneath the fluorescent lights.
I walked toward it slowly.
For years, I had considered it a sentimental possession.
Now I wondered what my father had hidden inside it.
Charlotte followed.
"Do you know where to look?""
I shook my head.
"Not yet.""
I opened the driver's door.
The familiar smell of old leather and my father's aftershave seemed to linger.
I ran my hand beneath the dashboard.
Nothing.
I checked the glove compartment.
Insurance papers.
Registration.
An old flashlight.
Nothing unusual.
Then Charlotte noticed something.
"Ethan.""
She pointed toward the center console.
There was a small scratch beneath the gear selector.
Three letters had been carved into the plastic.
D.H.
I pressed the area.
A hidden compartment clicked open.
Inside was a small silver key and a photograph.
The photograph showed my father standing beside two newborn babies.
Me and Charlotte.
On the back was a message.
Two children. One family. Never let them separate you again.
I picked up the key.
It had a tiny number engraved on it.
*214.*
Detective Bennett examined it.
"Could be a safe-deposit box.""
Charlotte looked at the photograph.
Then she noticed something else.
A second piece of paper was folded beneath it.
She opened it.
Her face went pale.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She handed it to me.
It was a copy of a bank transfer.
$47,800,000.
The same amount as the account in the ledger.
But the recipient was different.
The money had been transferred from the Hayes Legacy Trust to a private account just two days before Daniel died.
The account holder was listed as:
*Evelyn Reed.*
I looked at Charlotte.
"Who's Evelyn Reed?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Detective Bennett examined the document.
"Wait.""
She zoomed in on the signature.
"That's not a bank authorization.""
"What do you mean?""
"Look at the bottom.""
I followed her finger.
The transfer had been approved using a digital authorization token.
The name attached to it was:
*Daniel Hayes — Deceased.*
I stared.
The transfer had taken place after my father's death.
Someone had used his identity to move nearly forty-eight million dollars.
But the transaction carried an additional note.
Beneficiary release requires confirmation from both children.
Charlotte and I looked at each other.
"Both children?"" she whispered.
I nodded slowly.
"That's why Dad wanted us together.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
"Ethan Hayes?""
"Who's this?""
"My name is Evelyn Reed.""
I looked at the transfer document.
"How did you get my number?""
"Daniel gave it to me.""
"Where are you?""
She hesitated.
Then she said:
"At the bank. And I'm afraid Richard knows I've contacted you.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"What do you know about the money?""
Her voice trembled.
"Everything.""
"Who are you?""
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
"I'm the woman who helped Daniel hide the forty-seven million dollars.""
I looked at Charlotte.
"And why did he trust you?""
Evelyn's answer came quietly.
"Because I'm your father's first wife.""
I froze.
"Daniel was married before my mother?""
"Yes.""
"Then who are you?""
She took a shaky breath.
"I'm Charlotte's biological mother.""
Charlotte covered her mouth.
Evelyn continued.
"And Ethan, there's something else you need to know.""
I waited.
"Daniel didn't die the night everyone told you he did.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"Someone falsified the time of death.""
"That's impossible. I attended his funeral.""
"I know.""
May you like
Her voice broke.
"Because the man you buried wasn't Daniel Hayes.""
