Chapter 11: The Man Who Signed the Papers
Daniel Cross had been missing from public records for nearly a decade.
Samuel Whitmore confirmed that before we even left the hotel. He searched his old files while the police arranged for Sophie to be taken somewhere safe with Richard and me.
"Cross was a private attorney who handled several of Michael Lawson's business affairs," Samuel explained over the phone.
"He disappeared shortly after Thomas's death.""
Richard paced the hotel room, one hand resting protectively on Sophie's shoulder.
"Disappeared how?""
"He closed his office, sold his property, and stopped practicing law. I heard he moved overseas, but I never confirmed it.""
"And now he's back.""
"It would appear so.""
Richard looked at the security photograph again.
"Do you know why he arranged Catherine's adoption?""
Samuel paused.
"Thomas believed Cross had falsified the original guardianship documents. Michael wanted Catherine separated from her father, and Cross made it legally possible.""
Catherine sat beside Sophie.
"I remember his face," she whispered.
"I was twenty-three when Thomas found me. Cross came to my house a week later and warned me not to trust him.""
Richard turned.
"Why?""
"He said Thomas was dying and wanted to use me to repair his reputation. He told me that if I accepted Thomas as my father, I'd be dragged into a financial scandal.""
"Was any of that true?""
"Thomas was dying. And there was a financial scandal. But Cross wanted me to believe my father was the villain.""
I looked at Catherine.
"Did you tell Thomas what Cross said?""
"Yes. Thomas was furious. He told me Cross had been involved in the original fraud. He promised he would expose him, but he died before he could.""
Richard's phone rang.
The police officer had found Vanessa's car abandoned near an office building on the outskirts of town. Security footage showed her entering the building with Daniel Cross.
They were requesting our help identifying the location.
Richard gave them the address from the report and immediately prepared to leave.
I looked at Sophie.
"Sweetheart, you're coming with me.""
She clung to Richard.
"Can't I go with Daddy?""
He knelt in front of her.
"I need to help the police find Mommy. Grandma will stay with you, and I'll come back as soon as I can.""
Sophie began to cry again.
Richard held her close.
"I promise you, sweetheart. I'm not leaving you.""
When he finally stood, his face was wet with tears.
I had seen my son cry only a handful of times in his life. When his father died. When Sophie was born prematurely. And now, watching him try to protect his daughter from the consequences of a secret he had never known existed.
I wanted to tell him that everything would be all right.
But I had learned that promises made in fear could become another kind of lie.
So I told him the truth.
"Bring her mother home safely if you can. But don't sacrifice yourself to save someone who refuses to stop hurting you.""
He nodded.
Then he left with Catherine and the officers.
The office building had once housed the administrative headquarters of Bennett-Lawson Development.
Thomas had sold his shares decades earlier, but the company name remained on a brass plaque near the entrance. The building was nearly empty now, its windows dark and its reception desk abandoned.
A police officer met Richard and Catherine outside.
"We've identified the man in the footage as Daniel Cross. He entered the building with Vanessa approximately forty minutes ago.""
"Have you searched it?"" Richard asked.
"We're working through the floors.""
"Then let me help.""
The officer shook his head.
"We need you to stay outside until we know whether anyone inside is armed.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
Catherine touched his arm.
"Please. We need to find out what Vanessa knows, but we also need to get you home to Sophie.""
He took a breath.
Then he waited.
Twenty minutes later, an officer emerged from the building carrying a leather briefcase.
"Mr. Bennett, we found this in an office on the third floor.""
Richard recognized the initials embossed on the front.
D.C.
Daniel Cross.
The officer opened the case on the hood of a police vehicle.
Inside were passports, bank statements, old legal files, and a stack of photographs.
One photograph showed Thomas sitting in a hospital bed.
Another showed Michael Lawson entering the hospital.
The third showed Vanessa standing beside Daniel Cross outside the same building.
The date on the back was three days before Thomas died.
Richard stared at the image.
"She was there.""
Catherine nodded slowly.
"She knew Thomas was dying.""
The officer removed a folder from the briefcase.
It contained a copy of Thomas's medical records, along with a handwritten note.
Richard read it aloud.
"Patient's condition deteriorating. Family advised to prepare for possible complications.""
Beneath the note was another line, written in different handwriting.
*Ensure the trust papers are secured before he speaks to his son.*
Richard's face went white.
"Who wrote this?""
The officer examined the ink.
"We'll need a handwriting analysis, but it may have been Cross.""
Catherine pointed to the bottom of the page.
"Look at the initials.""
Two letters had been written beneath the sentence.
V.L.
Vanessa Lawson.
Richard stepped away from the vehicle.
For several seconds, he stood with his hands pressed against his head.
Then he looked at Catherine.
"Do you think she had something to do with Dad's death?""
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
He laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
"Because we don't know," she replied.
"We know she was there. We know she wanted the documents. We know she was willing to threaten people to get what she wanted. But we cannot turn suspicion into proof.""
Richard looked at the photograph again.
"Then we'll find proof.""
The officer continued searching the briefcase.
At the bottom lay a small envelope addressed to Samuel Whitmore.
Richard opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten statement signed by Daniel Cross.
The statement described how Michael had falsified records to hide Catherine's identity and how Cross had helped him arrange the illegal adoption.
It also mentioned Thomas's final days.
Cross claimed that Vanessa had visited the hospital to persuade Thomas to sign over the trust. When he refused, she threatened to expose the old fraud and destroy the family's reputation.
Thomas had refused again.
The statement ended abruptly.
**I did not know what she intended to do after I left the room. When I returned, Mr. Bennett was unconscious.
Michael told me to keep quiet. He said the family would be better off if the truth died with him.**
Richard's hands trembled.
"That's it. That's what happened.""
The officer shook his head.
"It's a statement, not proof of murder. We need to locate Cross and question him.""
"Then find him.""
"We're trying.""
Richard looked at the building.
"Where is Vanessa?""
The officer glanced toward the entrance.
"We believe she may still be inside.""
Richard moved toward the doors.
This time, the officer didn't stop him. He simply followed close behind.
They searched the third floor, room by room, until they reached a small conference room at the end of the corridor.
The door was open.
A desk lamp illuminated a stack of papers.
And on the table lay a second letter from Thomas.
Richard picked it up.
The first line was addressed to Vanessa.
You have mistaken silence for weakness, and kindness for permission.
Richard read the next paragraph.
If you continue down this path, you will lose more than money. You will lose the chance to become the person I once hoped you might be.
He lowered the page.
Catherine was crying.
"He wanted to help her," she whispered.
"Even after everything she did, he wanted to give her a chance.""
Richard looked at the letter.
"Maybe he was trying to save someone who didn't want to be saved.""
A sound came from the stairwell.
Footsteps.
The officers turned.
Daniel Cross appeared at the end of the corridor.
He was older than in the photographs, with a lined face and silver hair. His hands were raised, and his expression was strangely calm.
"I'm not armed," he said.
The officers approached him.
Richard stepped forward.
"Where's Vanessa?""
Cross looked at him.
"She left.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
Richard grabbed the edge of the conference table.
"You're lying.""
Cross's face tightened.
"I've spent thirty years lying for people who believed they could buy their way out of consequences. I'm done.""
He looked at Catherine.
"I'm sorry.""
She stared at him.
"You stole my life.""
"I know.""
"You helped Michael take me from my father.""
"Yes.""
"And now you expect me to forgive you?""
"No," Cross replied.
"I expect you to hate me. I deserve that.""
The officers placed him under arrest.
As they led him away, Cross turned toward Richard.
"There's something you need to know about Vanessa.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Tell me.""
Cross swallowed.
"She wasn't only trying to steal the trust. She believed Thomas had left another document that could destroy Michael.""
"What document?""
Cross looked toward the open conference room.
"The original hospital report. The one that explains why Thomas lost consciousness that night.""
Richard went completely still.
Cross continued.
"Michael told me he had destroyed it. But I saw Vanessa take a copy from the hospital records office two weeks ago.""
Richard's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Where is it?""
Cross shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Then he looked directly at Richard.
"But if she still has that report, she has the one thing Michael is terrified of.""
Before Richard could ask another question, an officer escorted Cross down the stairs.
Richard stood in the empty corridor, holding his father's letter.
Then his phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
He answered.
Her voice sounded different now. Frightened. Breathless.
"Richard, listen to me. You need to get Sophie away from your mother.""
His stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn has been lying to you about the money.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Stop it, Vanessa.""
"No. You have to listen. I found the original hospital report. I know what happened to your father.""
He gripped the phone.
"Then tell me.""
There was a long silence.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, "Your father wasn't supposed to die that night.""
Richard couldn't speak.
May you like
Vanessa continued, her voice breaking.
"And your mother was the last person who saw him alive.""
