Chapter 1: The Woman in the Fuchsia Dress
The woman who slapped me in front of my newborn daughter had no idea whose hotel lobby she was standing in.
And neither did the manager who rushed to defend her.
I was still holding Grace against my chest when the woman reached for her handbag and said something that made my blood run cold.
“Get this woman out of here before I make one phone call.””
I looked at her.
Then I looked at the manager.
Neither of them knew that I had already made mine.
My father's voice was still ringing in my ears.
Stay exactly where you are, sweetheart. Don't let anyone touch you or Grace. I'm coming.
I slipped my phone into my handbag and adjusted the blanket around my daughter.
The woman in the fuchsia dress laughed.
“Are you waiting for a parade?””
I didn't answer.
My cheek still burned from the slap. Grace had begun stirring, making those tiny noises newborns make when they are uncomfortable. I gently rocked her, trying to keep her asleep.
The manager, Marcus Reed, checked his watch.
“Miss, I have given you a reasonable opportunity to leave.””
I stared at him.
“You watched her hit me.””
“Ma'am, I did not witness the beginning of the altercation.””
“You witnessed the slap.””
He glanced at the woman.
She immediately placed a hand against her chest.
“Are you suggesting I assaulted her without provocation?””
Marcus cleared his throat.
“I'm simply trying to resolve this professionally.””
The woman smiled.
“Good. Because I won't tolerate being treated like some ordinary guest.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small gold business card.
“I'm Victoria Whitmore. My husband sits on the board of Whitmore Development Group. We have spent more money at this hotel than most people earn in a lifetime.””
Marcus's expression changed instantly.
“Mrs. Whitmore. Of course.””
I noticed the difference.
He had barely looked at my face when I told him I had been slapped.
But now he was practically bowing.
Victoria noticed me watching.
“See? That's how civilized people conduct themselves.””
I swallowed my anger.
“My name is Danielle Bennett. And I would like you to call the police.””
Marcus frowned.
“There's no need to escalate this.””
“Then perhaps you should have handled it when it happened.””
Victoria laughed.
“Police? Over a little misunderstanding?””
“You slapped me.””
“You walked into me.””
“I was standing still.””
“Perhaps you shouldn't stand where people are walking.””
Marcus stepped between us.
“Mrs. Whitmore, please allow me to handle this.””
Then he turned to me.
“Miss Bennett, security will escort you outside if you refuse to cooperate.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Grace was beginning to cry.
I could feel her tiny fingers moving against my blouse. She was hungry, and the last thing she needed was a room full of angry strangers.
“Can I at least sit down and feed my baby?”” I asked.
Marcus hesitated.
Victoria rolled her eyes.
“This is ridiculous. There are families here.””
I looked around.
A middle-aged man near the reception desk had stopped typing on his laptop. A young couple stood near the elevators. An elderly woman was watching from a velvet chair.
Everyone had heard.
Everyone knew something was wrong.
Yet nobody had spoken.
Then the young man with the laptop stood up.
“Actually, I saw everything.””
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Marcus turned.
“Sir, this is a private matter.””
“No, it isn't. She was standing there. Your guest walked straight toward her, slapped her, and then started shouting.””
Victoria snapped her head toward him.
“Excuse me?””
The young man closed his laptop.
“You heard me.””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Sir, I appreciate your concern, but—”
“I'm a guest here too. And I just watched your manager threaten the victim instead of helping her.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Do you know who my husband is?””
The young man shook his head.
“Honestly? I don't care.””
For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely unsettled.
I wanted to thank him, but Grace began crying harder.
I lowered my voice and whispered, “It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here.””
Then the hotel entrance opened.
A security guard hurried inside.
Behind him came a tall man in a charcoal suit, carrying a leather folder.
Marcus immediately straightened.
“Mr. Collins. Thank goodness. We have a situation.””
The man didn't respond.
His eyes moved across the lobby until they settled on me.
Then he stopped walking.
His expression changed completely.
“Ms. Bennett?””
I recognized him.
His name was Daniel Collins.
He was the hotel's general manager.
And he was one of the few people who knew exactly who my father was.
Victoria looked between us.
“Do you know this woman?””
Daniel ignored her.
He approached me carefully, his eyes briefly resting on the red mark across my cheek.
“Are you hurt?””
I shook my head.
“I'm fine. Grace is fine.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Would you explain why this guest has been standing here with a newborn while you threaten to have her removed?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Victoria interrupted.
“I'm glad you're here. This woman has been causing trouble.””
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I believe you should stop speaking.””
Her mouth fell open.
May you like
And then Daniel said something that made Marcus turn pale.
“Because I think you have made a very serious mistake.””
