Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back
The name Daniel Ashford changed everything.
For days, we had been looking at Vanessa like she was the beginning and the end of the problem.
But Daniel’s name opened a door we didn’t even know existed.
A door leading back to old wounds.
Old anger.
Old family battles.
Adrian stood in the living room staring at a photograph on the wall.
A younger version of himself stood beside another man.
Two brothers.
Same last name.
Completely different paths.
“That’s him,” Adrian said.
I looked at the picture.
Daniel had the same sharp features as Adrian.
The same confident smile.
But there was something different in his eyes.
Something colder.
“What happened between you two?”” I asked.
Adrian stayed quiet for a moment.
Then he sat down.
“My father built everything from nothing.””
I listened.
“He didn’t inherit wealth. He created it. Every company.
Every property. Every investment.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Daniel hated that.””
“Hated his father?””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“He hated that my father respected discipline more than talent.””
The words came slowly.
“Daniel was smarter than me in some ways. He was charming. He could walk into a room and make everyone believe he was their best friend.””
I thought of Vanessa.
Adrian noticed my expression.
“You see the similarity.””
I nodded.
“He and Vanessa are alike.””
“Yes.””
He looked away.
“They both know how to make people feel special before they use them.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it explained so much.
Vanessa didn’t just manipulate people.
She studied them.
She learned what they wanted to hear.
“What did Daniel do?”” I asked.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“When my father became sick, Daniel tried to take control of the company.””
“Without permission?””
“He believed he deserved it.””
Adrian explained that Daniel had created false reports, manipulated employees, and attempted to force their father into giving him control.
But their father discovered everything.
And that was when the will changed.
“He removed Daniel from everything.””
I looked at him.
“And you?””
“I became the heir.””
The silence afterward felt heavy.
Because suddenly, the reason behind Daniel’s anger became clear.
“Vanessa knew him.””
Adrian looked at me.
“What?””
“She knew Daniel.””
He frowned.
“How?””
I thought about the notebook.
The planning.
The timing.
The camera access.
“Because she couldn’t have done all this alone.””
Adrian grabbed his phone.
“Call the security team.””
Minutes later, they confirmed something that made everyone uncomfortable.
Daniel’s name appeared in the visitor records.
Not recently.
But before.
Before Vanessa’s accusations.
Before the nursery incident.
Before the camera problems.
“He came here three times,” the security officer said.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“When?””
The officer read the dates.
I felt my stomach tighten.
The first visit was two days before Vanessa started documenting her complaints about me.
The second was one week before the iron incident.
The third was the night Vanessa left the house.
They weren’t random visits.
They were meetings.
Adrian turned toward me.
“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””
“No.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“She was following someone’s plan.””
Then the front door opened.
Everyone froze.
The security officer reached for his radio.
But Adrian stepped forward.
Because he knew.
A man walked into the room.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Same eyes as Adrian.
Daniel.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel smiled.
“Still dramatic, little brother.””
Adrian’s face became stone.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked around the house.
“Actually, I think I’m exactly where I belong.””
My hands tightened.
There was something unsettling about him.
Not because he was loud.
Because he wasn’t.
Dangerous people weren’t always the ones who raised their voices.
Sometimes they were the ones who stayed calm while destroying everything.
“What do you want?”” Adrian asked.
Daniel laughed softly.
“You always were impatient.””
He looked at Noah’s room.
“I came to see my nephew.””
“No.””
One word.
Adrian didn’t hesitate.
Daniel’s smile faded.
“You really think you’re better than me?””
“I think I know what you are.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And what’s that?””
“A man who destroys things when he can’t own them.””
For the first time, Daniel’s expression changed.
Anger.
Just for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You have no idea what Vanessa told me.””
I felt my body tense.
So did Adrian.
“What did she tell you?””
Daniel smiled.
“That you were failing.””
The room went silent.
“She told me you were distracted. Weak. That you were more focused on pretending to be a family man than protecting your business.””
Adrian stared.
“And you believed her?””
Daniel shrugged.
“I believed what helped me.””
There it was.
The truth.
Daniel didn’t care about Vanessa.
He didn’t care about Noah.
He cared about winning.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“And you must be Clara.””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
He smiled.
“Vanessa talks.””
A chill moved through me.
“She talks about everyone.””
Adrian stepped between us.
“You’re leaving.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting everyone but yourself.””
He turned toward the door.
But before leaving, he stopped.
“You should ask Vanessa why she really chose Clara.””
Then he walked out.
Nobody moved.
Because once again, there was a question waiting.
Why me?
May you like
Why did Vanessa choose me?
And this time, I needed the answer.
