Chapter 12: The Last Night of My Father's Life
I stared at Eleanor.
The words didn't make sense.
“You gave Dad medication?””
She nodded.
“Three days before he died.””
“What medication?””
“His heart medication.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you poison him?””
“No.””
“Then explain!””
Eleanor covered her face.
“I visited him at the hospital. He was frightened. He told me Martin had discovered the original ledger and was coming after the family.””
Samuel looked furious.
“You said you weren't involved.””
“I wasn't trying to hurt him!””
“What did you give him?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“A small bottle of tablets. His doctor had prescribed them years earlier.””
“Did you tell the hospital?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I wasn't supposed to be there.””
I shook my head.
“You've been lying to us from the beginning.””
She began crying harder.
“Your father asked me to come.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He called me two days before his death. He said he needed to speak to me about the original trust.””
Samuel stepped forward.
“Then why did Martin say you poisoned him?””
Eleanor looked down.
“Because Martin has the hospital medication records.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you give Dad anything on the day he died?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I wanted to believe her.
But every person in this family had a secret.
Every explanation opened another door.
Emily approached me.
“Daniel, we need to find out what actually happened.””
I looked at Samuel.
“Where is Noah?””
“Safe. He's with my friend in a private apartment.””
“Take us there.””
Samuel nodded.
We left Room 614 through the rear staircase.
Before we reached the lobby, Eleanor stopped beside a framed photograph hanging crookedly on the wall.
It showed my father standing outside the hospital.
He was holding a bouquet of flowers.
A handwritten date appeared beneath it.
The day before he died.
I stared.
“Why is this here?””
Eleanor examined the frame.
“Your father left it.””
She removed the photograph.
Behind it was a small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
*DANIEL — OPEN WHEN YOU KNOW THE FOURTH HEIR.*
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Son,
If Samuel has found his way back to the family, then the first part of my plan has worked.
You must now understand why I kept the four of you apart.
The Carter estate is not simply money. It is a legal shield protecting the original ownership of the marina, the shipyard, and the international shipping contracts.
Martin has spent twenty-three years trying to break that shield.
He cannot do it while all four beneficiaries remain protected.
I read the next paragraph.
But there is one condition I never told you.
The trust can only be activated when all four heirs are physically present and one of them presents the original family seal.
I looked at Samuel.
“Where's the seal?””
He shook his head.
“I've never seen it.””
Eleanor whispered:
“Margaret had it.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“Before she disappeared, she gave it to someone.””
“Who?””
Eleanor's face tightened.
“Thomas Bennett.””
I remembered Thomas's injuries.
His warning.
His claim that my mother had been murdered.
And the statement he had hidden.
“Then we need to find him.””
Emily checked her phone.
“I've got an update from the hospital.””
“What?””
“Thomas survived surgery. He's conscious.””
I called the hospital.
After several attempts, a nurse finally transferred me to his room.
“Daniel?””
His voice was weak.
“Thomas, I need the family seal.””
A long silence.
“Where did you hear about that?””
“My father left instructions.””
Thomas exhaled.
“Then he finally trusted you with the truth.””
“Where is it?””
“In my safe deposit box.””
“Which bank?””
He gave me the name.
Then he added:
“Daniel, there's something else.””
“What?””
“Martin knows about the trust activation.””
I looked at Emily.
“How?””
“Because he has the other half of the family seal.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What other half?””
“Your mother split it into two pieces. One was given to me. The other was given to Martin.””
I stared at Eleanor.
She nodded slowly.
“Margaret believed that if the seal remained divided, nobody could activate the trust without all four heirs.””
Thomas continued.
“But Martin found a way to forge the missing half.””
“Then why hasn't he activated it?””
“Because he needs the original beneficiaries' signatures.””
I looked at the four names in the document.
Daniel.
Emily.
Grace.
Samuel.
“And what happens when we sign?””
Thomas's voice dropped.
“The Carter family becomes the legal controlling owner of every asset in the trust. Martin loses his claim permanently.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then that's what we'll do.””
Thomas was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Not until you know what happened to your father.””
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me.””
“The hospital contacted me the morning after Richard died. They had discovered an irregularity in his medication records.””
“What irregularity?””
“His prescribed dosage had been changed.””
“By whom?””
“Someone using the hospital's emergency authorization system.””
“Whose name was on it?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Margaret Carter.””
I looked toward Eleanor.
She was shaking her head.
“No.””
Thomas continued.
“Daniel, your father had been receiving a medication that could interact dangerously with his heart condition. The dosage was increased without medical approval.””
“Who administered it?””
“The nurse's report names Eleanor Reed.””
Eleanor stepped back.
Samuel stared at her.
“You killed him?””
“No!”” she screamed.
I held up my hand.
“Thomas, is there proof?””
“There's a video.””
“Where?””
“Hospital archive. But the recording was removed.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course it was.””
Thomas whispered:
“There's one copy left.””
“Where?””
“In a private storage account. Richard arranged it before his death.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Give me the access information.””
Thomas hesitated.
Then he said:
“It's in the original family seal.””
The call ended.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Did you administer the medication?””
She shook her head.
“I gave him the bottle. He took the tablets himself.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
“He asked me to bring them.””
Samuel stepped closer.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to end the pain.””
I froze.
“What?””
Eleanor wiped her face.
“Your father knew his condition was worsening. He believed he had weeks left. He asked me to bring the medication because he didn't trust the hospital pharmacy.””
I stared.
“Are you saying he wanted to die?””
“No. He wanted to control his final days.””
I felt sick.
My father had been planning his death.
He had left us the card, the yacht, the letters, the recordings.
He had prepared everything.
Except telling us the truth.
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
*YOU HAVE THE WRONG WOMAN.*
Another message appeared.
*ELEANOR DID NOT KILL RICHARD.*
Then a photograph.
A hospital corridor.
My father was sitting in a wheelchair.
Beside him stood a nurse.
The image was grainy, but I recognized the nurse immediately.
She had been at his bedside during his final week.
Her name was Rachel Morgan.
The message beneath the photograph read:
*SHE CHANGED THE DOSAGE. SHE WAS PAID BY MARTIN.*
I showed the others.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Samuel looked furious.
Emily stepped closer.
“Who sent it?””
I checked the number.
Blocked.
Then another message arrived.
*I HAVE THE ORIGINAL VIDEO. MEET ME AT THE MARINA AT 10 A.M. TOMORROW. COME ALONE.*
I stared at the screen.
A final message followed.
*AND BRING ALL FOUR CARTER HEIRS.*
I looked at Emily.
“Grace.””
She nodded.
“It's the only person who could know about the original video.””
I turned toward Samuel.
“Can you contact her?””
He shook his head.
“I don't have her number.””
Eleanor quietly reached into her handbag.
“I do.””
She removed an old photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside my father.
Grace.
On the back was a telephone number and a handwritten sentence.
*THE GIRL WHO KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.*
I took the photograph.
Then I looked at the three people standing around me.
My sister.
My brother.
My biological mother.
For the first time, I could see the shape of the family my father had tried to protect.
But I still didn't know whether he had protected us from Martin Langford or from the truth itself.
I dialed Grace's number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then a woman answered.
“Hello?””
I swallowed.
“Grace?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
Silence.
Then her voice became very quiet.
“I've been waiting thirty-seven years for you to call.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because I'm not just your sister, Daniel.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Her next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“I'm the person who signed your father's death certificate.””
I stared at the phone.
“You're a forensic accountant.””
“I was.””
“What are you now?””
A long silence followed.
Then Grace whispered:
“I'm the hospital administrator who helped cover up what happened to Richard Carter.””
And before I could ask another question, she added:
“But I didn't do it to protect Martin.””
May you like
She paused.
“I did it because your father begged me to protect the person who killed him.””
