Chapter 9: The Father Who Never Left
“I’m your father.””
Daniel’s words didn’t echo.
They didn’t need to.
They were already loud enough inside my head.
I stared at him.
The man I had spent my entire life calling my uncle.
The man I remembered as a childhood hero.
The man who disappeared before I was old enough to understand why.
My father.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
A defense.
A refusal.
A desperate attempt to keep my world from collapsing completely.
Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“I know this is impossible to accept.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
My voice grew louder.
“You don’t get to walk back into my life and tell me you’re my father.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
His face broke.
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I looked around the basement.
At everyone.
My entire life was standing in front of me.
And somehow, nobody felt familiar anymore.
Robert.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who came to every school event.
He wasn’t my biological father.
But he was my dad.
And that made everything more confusing.
“Was any of it real?””
The question was directed at everyone.
Nobody answered.
Finally, Robert spoke.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
His voice was weak.
“But not in the way you think.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Nothing is in the way I think anymore.””
Robert gripped the bars.
“I raised you.””
The pain in his voice surprised me.
“I held you when you cried. I stayed awake when you were sick. I taught you everything I knew.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“You are my son.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked away.
Because there was no answer that could fix it.
Alicia stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She stopped.
The silence was enough.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Alicia looked devastated.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Robert.
“Because every person who knew the truth became a target.””
I looked at Calvin.
“And somehow he knew everything.””
Calvin smiled.
“Because I was there.””
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
He walked closer.
“It means your entire family has been fighting over a story that started before you were born.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Calvin looked amused.
“Why?””
“Because you’ve already done enough.””
Calvin laughed.
“You still think you’re the hero.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I know I failed.””
The honesty stopped me.
Daniel continued.
“I should have fought harder. I should have found a way to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“You left.””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because I thought disappearing would keep you alive.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you know what Calvin was capable of.””
Everyone looked toward him.
Calvin’s smile faded.
Daniel continued.
“Calvin wasn’t just stealing money.””
He looked at me.
“He was building leverage.””
“What kind of leverage?””
Daniel looked at Robert.
“The kind that destroys families.””
Robert closed his eyes.
Alicia spoke softly.
“Calvin knew about Marcus before anyone else.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because he was watching us.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Alicia nodded.
“He knew I was pregnant.””
The basement became silent.
“He knew Daniel was the father.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And Robert?””
Alicia looked at him.
“Robert knew later.””
My eyes moved to Robert.
He looked ashamed.
“How?””
He answered quietly.
“Because Alicia came to me.””
I frowned.
“Why would she come to you?””
Robert looked at Alicia.
She looked away.
“She thought I could help.””
The pain in his voice deepened.
“And I failed her.””
Alicia shook her head.
“You tried.””
“No.””
Robert’s voice cracked.
“I protected my reputation instead of protecting you.””
Nobody spoke.
For the first time, Robert wasn’t defending himself.
He was accepting what he had done.
I looked at him.
“Did you love me?””
His face collapsed.
“More than anything.””
That answer hurt.
Because I believed him.
That was the worst part.
I believed everyone.
And everyone had still lied.
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Again.
Another sound.
A door opening.
Calvin looked toward the stairs.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
“Who did you bring?””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Calvin stared at him.
“You heard me.””
Nobody moved.
Then footsteps echoed.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was coming down.
Alicia grabbed my arm.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“We need to leave.””
“Who is that?””
Her face turned pale.
“Someone who knows more than Calvin.””
The footsteps stopped.
A man appeared at the top of the stairs.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Everyone went silent.
Robert whispered:
“No.””
The stranger looked around the basement.
Then smiled.
“Looks like everyone finally decided to tell the truth.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man laughed.
“You really don’t remember me?””
He walked down.
“One of the problems with burying secrets is that sometimes the people buried with them come back.””
He reached the bottom step.
I stared at him.
There was something familiar about his face.
Not from my memories.
From somewhere else.
Then he looked at Alicia.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Alicia’s expression changed.
“You.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“No.””
The stranger smiled.
“You always were protective.””
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it before.
On the phone.
The mysterious caller.
The man Vanessa was afraid of.
The man behind everything.
Calvin looked at him.
“You weren’t supposed to come here.””
The stranger ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
“Marcus.””
Hearing my name from him felt wrong.
“How do you know me?””
He smiled.
“Because I knew your mother before you were born.””
Alicia whispered:
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
The stranger continued.
“My name is Thomas Brooks.””
My heart stopped.
Brooks.
Alicia’s last name.
My mother’s family.
My family.
“I’m your grandfather.””
Nobody spoke.
Not even Calvin.
Thomas looked around.
“You’ve all been fighting over the wrong enemy.””
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“What do you want?””
Thomas smiled.
“What I’ve always wanted.””
He looked at me.
“The truth.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
He placed it on the table.
“This one explains why Alicia disappeared.””
Alicia shook her head.
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You can’t hide it anymore.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What is inside?””
Thomas looked at me.
“The reason your mother left.””
Alicia whispered:
“Marcus, please.””
But I couldn’t stop.
Not anymore.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Written in my mother’s handwriting.
Dated fifteen years ago.
The first line made my entire body go cold.
*“If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect my son.””*
I looked up.
Alicia was crying.
Daniel looked terrified.
Robert looked broken.
And Calvin took one step backward.
Because whatever was written in that letter…
was something even he didn’t want me to know.
I continued reading.
May you like
And the next sentence revealed the final secret.
*“Marcus is not the only child I lost.””*
