Chapter 8: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
By eight the following morning, Christmas had become the last thing on my mind.
Lily sat beside me on the living room sofa, wrapped in a soft blanket while she ate pancakes from a plate on her lap. I had made them myself. She had asked for chocolate chips, and I had added so many that she smiled for the first time since the previous evening.
That smile nearly broke me.
Vanessa had spent the night in the guest room. Denise had stayed because neither Lily nor I wanted to be alone with unanswered questions.
The wooden box sat on the coffee table, its contents arranged in neat piles.
I had photographed every page and backed up the images. I wasn't a lawyer, and I wasn't an investigator, but I knew enough not to let another important document disappear.
At nine fifteen, my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.
I answered.
“Marcus Reed?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Brooks. Vanessa is my sister.””
I stood.
“I'm listening.””
There was a long pause.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“Vanessa told me you found the box.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“She told you that?””
“She called me early this morning.””
“What did she say?””
“That you were asking questions about Rachel.””
I glanced toward the guest room.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, watching me.
“Then perhaps you can answer them,” I said.
Daniel exhaled.
“Marcus, I think we should speak in person.””
“Why?””
“Because there are things my sister doesn't understand.””
“Things you understand?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
I looked at the clock.
“Come to the house.””
“Not there.””
“Why not?””
“Because Vanessa is there.””
I looked directly at my wife.
She shook her head urgently, silently telling me not to agree.
That alone made my decision.
“Ten o'clock,” I said.
“You come here, and you tell me everything.””
Daniel hesitated.
“All right.””
The call ended.
Vanessa rushed toward me.
“You cannot trust him.””
I slipped my phone into my pocket.
“Why?””
“Because he's trying to save himself.””
“From what?””
She looked toward Lily, then lowered her voice.
“Daniel helped me with the paperwork. But he doesn't know the whole story.””
I stared at her.
“You've spent three years telling me nothing. Now you're suddenly concerned about which parts of the truth I hear?””
“Marcus, please.””
“No more, Vanessa.””
She looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, can you go upstairs for a little while?””
Lily immediately shook her head and grabbed my hand.
I crouched beside her.
“You can stay here, baby.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You're making this impossible.””
I rose slowly.
“No. I'm finally making it honest.””
At ten minutes past ten, the doorbell rang.
Daniel stood on the porch wearing a gray wool coat and carrying a slim leather folder. He looked to be in his early forties, with Vanessa's dark eyes and the same tightly controlled expression.
He stepped inside and looked at his sister.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel said, “You should have told him years ago.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You have no idea what I went through.””
“I know exactly what you went through. I helped you create the problem.””
The admission made my pulse quicken.
I gestured toward the living room.
“Sit down. Both of you.””
Daniel placed the folder on the coffee table.
He looked at Lily.
“Hi, Lily.””
She moved closer to me.
“Do you know my mommy?””
Daniel's expression softened.
“I met her a few times.””
“Was she nice?””
He looked down.
“Yes. She was.””
Lily studied him.
“Then why did everybody keep secrets from Daddy?””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“That's a fair question.””
He sat opposite me and opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of financial records, several dated letters, and a document bearing Rachel's name.
“I helped Vanessa prepare the paperwork,” he began.
“At the time, she told me Rachel had authorized everything.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“I told you she was going to sign it.””
“You said she had already agreed.””
“I thought she would!””
Daniel looked at me.
“That's the truth. Vanessa believed Rachel would eventually approve the transfer. But the paperwork was submitted before Rachel signed anything.””
My jaw tightened.
“Was Rachel's signature forged?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I was going to correct it.””
Daniel didn't look at her.
“I told you not to submit it. I told you we should wait until Rachel signed the proper documents.””
“You said you could handle it!””
“I said I could help you fix the situation, not hide it.””
I leaned forward.
“What was the transfer for?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Vanessa was in serious financial trouble. She had debts she hadn't told anyone about. She believed money in Rachel's account could cover them temporarily.””
I stared at my wife.
“How much?””
Vanessa whispered a number.
It was enough to make my stomach drop.
“That was Rachel's savings,” I said.
“Money she had set aside for Lily.””
“I intended to repay it!””
“With what?””
She couldn't answer.
Daniel removed another page.
“Rachel discovered the transfer before the funds were fully moved. She confronted Vanessa and demanded that the transaction be canceled. Most of the money was eventually returned, but the forged document remained in the records.””
“Why?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Because I was afraid that admitting my involvement would destroy my career. I worked in financial compliance at the time. A fraud investigation could have cost me everything.””
“So you both kept quiet.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you married me without telling me.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I loved you.””
“Did you?””
“Yes!””
“Or did you love the life you thought you could have with me?””
She recoiled as if I had struck her.
Daniel stared at the floor.
I continued.
“Did Rachel threaten to report you?””
“Yes,” Vanessa whispered.
“But she gave me a chance to make things right.””
“What happened at the coffee shop?””
Vanessa answered this time.
“She told me she had copies of everything. She said she would bring them to you if I didn't confess.””
“And you refused.””
“I was terrified.””
“So you let her leave, knowing she might expose you.””
“I didn't hurt her!””
Her voice broke.
I watched her carefully.
I wanted to believe that the accident had been exactly what the official report said it was. I wanted to believe that Vanessa's cruelty toward Lily and her lies about Rachel were separate from the tragedy that had taken my first wife.
But wanting something to be true didn't make it true.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What are the second records Rachel mentioned?””
He opened the folder to its final section.
“Rachel kept copies of the original transaction and a written statement explaining what happened. She gave one set to Denise. She told me she had placed the other set somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
Daniel shook his head.
“She never told me.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“That's enough. You've said enough.””
Daniel looked up at her.
“No, Vanessa. I haven't.””
He removed one final sheet from the folder.
It was a copy of a message sent between Vanessa and Daniel on the night of Rachel's accident.
The timestamp read 8:56 p.m.
Daniel's message was brief.
Did you get the second set?
Vanessa's reply was even shorter.
No. Rachel still has it.
I looked up.
The accident had occurred less than an hour later.
“Why did you ask her that night?”” I demanded.
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Rachel had told us she intended to deliver the records the next morning.””
“Then why were you discussing them at nearly nine o'clock?””
“Because Vanessa called me after their meeting.””
I turned toward my wife.
“What did you tell him?””
Vanessa was trembling.
“I told him Rachel had left the coffee shop.””
“And?””
She stared at the message.
“I told him she was taking the main road.””
Daniel suddenly looked up.
“You told me she was going home.””
The room fell silent.
I looked between them.
“Why does that matter?””
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“Because I never knew she had changed her route.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“Daniel—”
He stood abruptly.
“You told me you had no idea where she was going!””
“I didn't!””
“You sent me that message!””
I felt cold all over.
The message had been sent at 8:56 p.m.
Rachel had told Denise she was taking the main road at 8:42.
Someone knew where she was going.
Someone had been discussing her movements while she was still alive.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you follow Rachel that night?””
He shook his head immediately.
“No.””
“Did you ask anyone else to follow her?””
“No, Marcus.””
“Then explain why you were discussing her route.””
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“I thought she was trying to find out whether Rachel had reached home.””
Vanessa shook her head, crying.
“I was worried about her.””
“Then why didn't you call the police when you learned about the accident?””
She had no answer.
I took the printed messages from Daniel.
For the first time, the documents didn't merely suggest a hidden financial crime.
They suggested that two people had known more about Rachel's final hours than they had admitted.
I picked up my phone.
“I'm contacting the authorities. These records need to be examined by someone qualified to determine what happened.””
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Marcus, please. You don't know what you're doing.””
I gently removed her hand.
“No. I didn't know what I was doing when I married you. I didn't know what was happening in my own house. I didn't know my daughter was afraid to ask for food.””
Her face crumpled.
“But I'm not going to make that mistake again.””
I dialed.
As the call connected, Daniel reached into his coat pocket and removed a small envelope.
“There is something else,” he said.
I covered the phone briefly.
“What?””
He placed the envelope on the table.
“Rachel gave this to me before the accident. I never opened it.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because she told me to give it to you if she couldn't.””
My breath caught.
On the front, in Rachel's familiar handwriting, were six words.
For Marcus, if I never come home.
I ended the call only long enough to take the envelope.
Then I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Rachel standing beside a car, holding a document folder against her chest.
On the back was a date and a handwritten sentence.
The person who has the second set is closer to Lily than you think.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Vanessa was staring at the photograph.
But she wasn't looking at Rachel.
She was looking at the car.

And when I asked her why, she whispered a name that made Daniel sink back into his chair.
“My father.””
