Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO STARTED ITI thought the secrets were over.

They weren't.

Margaret showed me everything.

Michael's mother had not been an innocent woman.

She had inherited the network from her father.

When Michael discovered it, he tried to expose it.

She opposed him.

Daniel became her ally.

Richard became their intermediary.

Thomas handled security.

And everyone else followed.

But Michael eventually turned against them.

He copied the records.

He created the false ledger.

He staged his death.

And he hid the real evidence.

The final piece was my husband's mother.

She had left behind a confession.

I read it in silence.

She admitted everything.

But there was one detail that stunned me.

She claimed Michael had not been her greatest enemy.

Someone else had been working against her.

Someone inside the family.

Margaret looked at me.

“Your sister-in-law.”

I frowned.

“Michael's sister?”

“Yes.”

“She died before him.”

“No.”

I stared.

Margaret shook her head.

“She disappeared.”

Another secret.

Another fake death.

Another person who might still be alive.

But this time I wasn't afraid.

I was tired.

Tired of people using death as a weapon.

Tired of secrets controlling our lives.

So I decided to end it.

We found Michael's sister.

She was living quietly in Oregon.

When I met her, she cried.

“I never wanted any of this.”

“Then why disappear?”

“Because I knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

She told us the final secret.

The network had never belonged to the Moretti family.

It had belonged to a group of wealthy investors who had manipulated several families for generations.

The Morettis were only one branch.

The Hale family was another.

And Michael had spent his life trying to break free.

I finally understood.

The fortune.

The ledger.

The threats.

The forged documents.

The attacks.

They were all pieces of a much larger system.

But the system was collapsing.

Because the evidence was finally public.

That night, Michael sat beside me.

“I am sorry you had to learn all this.”

I looked at him.

“I would rather know the truth than live another twenty years believing a lie.”

He smiled.

“You've always been stronger than me.”

“No.”

I touched his hand.

“I just survived.”

May you like

He kissed my forehead.

“So did I.”
