The Clock Tower Inheritance / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Clock

“The person your father was trying to protect you from…”

Silas stopped speaking.

The silence that followed was louder than any answer.

I stared at him, waiting for the name.

Waiting for the truth.

But the old man only looked toward Hale Manor, toward the clock tower rising above the mansion like a silent guardian watching everything beneath it.

“Who?”” I asked again.

Silas tightened his jaw.

“Not here.””

My grip closed around the brass key.

“You just told me my father knew someone would stop me. Someone sent me a warning message. And now you’re telling me we can’t talk here?””

Silas glanced around the cemetery.

The empty paths.

The rows of graves.

The shadows between the trees.

Even though the afternoon sun was still bright, he looked like a man standing in the middle of a battlefield.

“Your father spent his whole life believing information was a weapon,” Silas said.

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the wrong person knowing the wrong thing can destroy everything.””

I looked down at the envelope in my hand.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father had written those words.

He had planned for this moment.

The thought should have comforted me.

Instead, it made my stomach twist.

“Silas,” I said, lowering my voice, “did my father know Celeste was going to take the estate?””

The old man didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“He knew.””

Silas looked away.

“Your father knew many things.””

“Then why didn’t he stop her?””

A painful expression crossed his face.

“Because stopping someone is easy when you know their plan.””

He paused.

“Stopping someone when you don’t know who they’re working with is different.””

The words hung between us.

“Working with?”” I repeated.

Silas looked at me.

“You need to go to the tower.””

I almost laughed.

After everything that happened, after being thrown out of my own family home, after discovering my father left behind some hidden message, this old man wanted me to walk back into the place where I had just been humiliated.

“You’re telling me to break into the house where I was just kicked out?””

Silas shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“You’re not breaking in.””

He looked at the brass key.

“Your father built a way for you to enter.””

Twenty minutes later, I stood at the edge of Hale Manor’s property.

The iron gates were closed.

The mansion looked different from the outside now.

As a child, it had seemed enormous but welcoming.

Tonight, it looked like it was hiding something.

Silas walked beside me along an old stone path covered by trees.

“You know every inch of this place?”” I asked.

“I helped build some of it.””

I looked at him.

“You were a gravedigger.””

A faint smile appeared.

“I was many things.””

He stopped near a side entrance hidden behind ivy.

The wooden door was old, almost forgotten.

I had walked past it hundreds of times.

I had never noticed it.

Silas pointed.

“Your father wanted this entrance untouched.””

I reached for the handle.

It opened immediately.

No alarm.

No resistance.

Inside was darkness and the smell of old wood.

I stepped forward.

The sound of my shoes echoed through the empty hallway.

“This feels wrong,” I whispered.

Silas followed.

“Most truths do at first.””

We moved through the mansion quietly.

The main halls were exactly as I remembered.

The paintings.

The antique furniture.

The massive staircase.

But something felt different.

The house was too quiet.

My father’s presence had always filled this place.

Now it felt like everyone was holding their breath.

As we approached the east wing, I saw the clock tower entrance.

A tall wooden door.

Locked.

I pulled out the brass key.

My hands paused.

For a moment, I was six years old again.

Standing beside my father.

Looking up at the massive clock mechanism.

“Dad,” I whispered.

Silas watched me.

“He loved you.””

I looked at him sharply.

“Then why did he push me away?””

The old man’s expression softened.

“Because sometimes people think distance is the same thing as protection.””

I inserted the key.

The lock turned.

A heavy click echoed through the hallway.

The door opened.

The clock tower was colder than the rest of the mansion.

The air smelled like metal and dust.

Above us, enormous gears moved slowly behind glass panels.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Each sound felt like a countdown.

I climbed the narrow staircase, following the path I had taken as a child.

At the top was the clock mechanism.

Massive bronze wheels.

Ancient gears.

A machine built to outlast generations.

I looked around.

“Where is it?””

Silas pointed.

“Your father said you would know.””

I stared at the clock.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A small marking on the metal frame.

The Hale family crest.

The same symbol as the key.

I pressed my hand against it.

Nothing happened.

I pushed harder.

A section of the wooden panel moved.

My breath caught.

A hidden compartment.

I turned to Silas.

“He built this?””

The old man nodded.

“Years ago.””

Inside was a small metal box.

I pulled it out carefully.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside were several documents.

Property deeds.

Bank records.

Financial statements.

A small digital recorder.

And another envelope.

This one was thicker.

The first page of the documents immediately caught my attention.

My name.

Adrian Hale.

Beneath it:

*Primary Beneficiary Declaration.*

I froze.

“No.””

Silas watched silently.

I grabbed the next page.

Then another.

The documents weren’t transferring the estate to Celeste.

They were showing something else.

A legal structure.

A hidden trust.

Assets moved years earlier.

Accounts.

Properties.

Companies.

Everything connected to Hale Industries.

My father hadn’t left me nothing.

He had hidden everything.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Silas stepped closer.

“Because your father believed the estate would be taken before you were ready.””

My eyes moved across the papers.

“Taken by who?””

Before Silas could answer, the recorder caught my attention.

A red light blinked.

It was already activated.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Adrian…”

I stopped breathing.

For years, I had imagined hearing his voice again.

I never imagined it would come from a machine.

“If you’re hearing this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.””

I looked at Silas.

The old man lowered his eyes.

My father continued.

“I need you to understand something. The documents you found are not an inheritance.””

A pause.

“They are evidence.””

My heartbeat accelerated.

The clock above us continued ticking.

“Someone inside this family has been manipulating my decisions for years.””

My fingers tightened around the recorder.

“Adrian, I wanted to tell you everything. I wanted to explain why I pushed you away. But I couldn’t risk you becoming a target before I knew the truth.””

The recording crackled.

Then my father said the words that changed everything.

“Celeste Hale is not who she claims to be.””

A sudden noise interrupted the message.

A sound from below.

The tower door.

Someone entering.

Silas immediately turned off the recorder.

“What happened?”” I whispered.

His face had changed.

The fear was back.

“Someone followed us.””

We stood frozen.

Footsteps echoed from the staircase.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming closer.

I grabbed the documents.

Silas looked around the room.

“There’s another exit.””

“Where?””

He pointed toward the clock mechanism.

“There.””

The footsteps grew louder.

One floor below.

A woman’s voice floated upward.

“Adrian?””

My blood turned cold.

Celeste.

She knew I was here.

Silas grabbed my arm.

“Listen to me. Whatever happens, do not let her see those papers.””

The footsteps stopped.

Then Celeste called again.

“Adrian, I know you’re up there.””

I stared at the hidden documents in my hands.

At my father’s final warning.

At the woman who had taken everything from me standing below.

The clock struck midnight.

May you like

And Celeste spoke four words that made my entire body go still.

“I know you found it.””
