The Collar That Exposed Her / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Last Message From Marcus King

The warehouse looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rust-covered doors.

Walls covered in years of dirt and neglect.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

Which made it the perfect place for secrets.

Damon arrived with security nearby, but he insisted we enter together.

I noticed something about him that day.

The old Damon would have walked in alone.

The man who believed he had to carry every burden himself.

But now?

He looked beside him.

He trusted someone.

Me.

The warehouse was empty at first.

Then we heard a voice.

“You look just like your mother.””

I froze.

An older man stepped out from the shadows.

He had gray hair, tired eyes, and a face I didn’t recognize.

Damon immediately moved in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

“My name is Samuel Carter.””

Victor had mentioned that name before.

A former employee of King Enterprises.

Someone who disappeared after Marcus died.

Damon’s expression hardened.

“You were there.””

Samuel nodded.

“I was.””

“Where?””

“The night your father died.””

The air changed.

Because after all these years, we were standing in front of someone who knew.

Someone who had been there.

Damon stepped forward.

“Tell me what happened.””

Samuel looked down.

“Your father discovered Richard Laurent was planning to take control of everything.””

“We know that.””

“No.””

Samuel shook his head.

“You know pieces.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small device.

“Your father found out Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Damon stared at him.

“Who else?””

Samuel hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Samuel’s voice softened.

“Your mother was involved.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

Damon looked at me quickly.

But I already knew.

Not involved the way they wanted me to believe.

There was something else.

Samuel continued.

“Your mother was one of the few people Marcus trusted. She helped him gather information.””

I breathed again.

“She wasn’t helping them.””

Samuel shook his head.

“She was helping him.””

Damon closed his eyes.

The relief was mixed with anger.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Marcus knew Richard would come after anyone who helped him.””

Samuel looked at me.

“Your mother wanted to protect you.””

I looked away.

All those years.

All those unanswered questions.

My mother carried a secret that could have gotten her killed.

And she still came home every night and made dinner.

Still hugged me.

Still told me everything would be okay.

Samuel handed Damon the device.

“Your father recorded a message.””

Damon took it carefully.

“A message?””

Samuel nodded.

“He knew someone might betray him. He knew the evidence might disappear.””

We found an old television monitor in the warehouse.

Samuel connected the device.

The screen flickered.

Then Marcus King appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But still powerful.

Damon stopped breathing.

His father’s face filled the screen.

“Damon.””

Just hearing his name almost broke him.

Marcus continued.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.””

Damon looked down.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something. The person who hurts you most will not always be your enemy.””

A pause.

“Sometimes it will be the person you trusted enough to let close.””

Damon’s eyes hardened.

“Richard Laurent wanted my company. But that was never his biggest goal.””

Marcus leaned closer to the camera.

“He wanted my family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Samuel said the words that changed everything.

“Richard didn’t order the bombing.””

Damon looked up.

“What?””

Samuel took a breath.

“He planned the attack. But someone else made the final decision.””

“Who?””

Samuel looked toward the door.

Fear crossed his face.

And that was when we heard footsteps outside.

Multiple footsteps.

Someone had followed us.

Samuel turned pale.

“They found me.””

The warehouse doors slammed open.

Security rushed forward.

Damon grabbed my hand.

“Stay behind me.””

But I wasn’t the same woman who found Major hiding in that garage.

I had spent my whole life watching people underestimate me.

I knew exactly what happened when people thought someone was powerless.

They missed what that person could see.

While everyone focused on the entrance, I noticed something.

A side door.

Open.

A way out.

“Damon.””

He looked at me.

I pointed.

He understood immediately.

We moved.

Samuel followed.

Behind us, voices echoed through the warehouse.

But we escaped before they reached us.

Outside, the night air hit my face.

Damon turned toward Samuel.

“Who was that?””

Samuel looked back at the warehouse.

“I don’t know.””

But his expression said he did.

And that scared me.

Because secrets had layers.

Marcus had uncovered Richard.

Richard had hidden someone else.

And now someone was willing to chase us to protect the final truth.

Damon looked at the device in his hand.

Then at me.

“My father spent years trying to expose them.””

I nodded.

“And now we finish what he started.””

He looked at me.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

For the first time, that didn’t feel like a burden.

It felt like an honor.

But as we drove away, Samuel received a message.

One name appeared on his phone.

A name none of us expected.

A name that made Damon’s entire world shake.

May you like

Because the person who ordered the final attack was not Richard Laurent.

It was someone from inside the King family.
