Chapter 8: A Family Reborn in War
We left the church like we were running from a fire.
Because in some ways, we were.
The flames were different now.
No smoke.
No burning walls.
Just secrets, betrayal, and people willing to destroy everything to get what they wanted.
The SUV raced through the city.
Malik sat in the front, speaking into his phone.
His voice stayed calm.
Too calm.
I had learned something about him in the last twenty-four hours.
The quieter Malik became, the more dangerous the situation was.
“Where is Zion?”” I asked.
He looked back at me.
“He’s safe.””
I exhaled.
But only slightly.
“Safe where?””
“With people I trust.””
I almost laughed.
“Do you still know who you can trust?””
The question hurt him.
I saw it.
And immediately regretted saying it.
Because I wasn’t trying to attack him.
I was scared.
My entire world had changed.
The man I spent years imagining as a disappointment was suddenly risking everything for me.
And the man my father once called a brother was trying to destroy us.
Nothing made sense.
Malik looked back at me.
“You’re right.””
I didn’t expect that.
“I don’t know.””
He paused.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“I know I should have found you sooner.””
I looked away.
Because that was the one sentence I wanted to hear.
And the one sentence I wasn’t ready for.
We arrived at the house.
Zion was there.
Alive.
Safe.
The moment Malik saw him, the mask fell.
The powerful businessman disappeared.
The feared man disappeared.
All that remained was a father.
He picked up his son and held him close.
I watched quietly.
And something inside me shifted.
Because I saw myself in that moment.
I saw the father I never had.
Not because he wasn’t there.
Because he had been kept away.
Later that night, Renee and I sat together in one of the guest rooms.
For the first time in my life, I had questions she couldn’t avoid.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Malik?””
Her eyes lifted.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“Then who?””
She took a deep breath.
“Of what would happen if you knew you were his daughter.””
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
“Your father’s name carries power.””
“I know.””
“No, baby.””
She touched my hand.
“You know the money. The cars. The buildings.””
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t know the enemies.””
I stayed quiet.
“People think power means safety.””
She shook her head.
“Sometimes power paints a target on your back.””
I looked at her.
“You thought hiding me would protect me.””
“Yes.””
“Did it?””
That question hurt both of us.
She looked away.
“No.””
The honesty made my chest ache.
For twenty-seven years, she had done what she thought was right.
But sometimes protection and control look exactly the same.
A knock came at the door.
Malik stood there.
“I need to talk to both of you.””
We followed him downstairs.
On the table were photographs, documents, and files.
Evidence.
“The person who attacked our security team tonight wasn’t working alone.””
Renee stiffened.
“What did you find?””
Malik looked at her.
“Derrick had help.””
My heart sank.
“From who?””
He placed a photograph on the table.
A man standing beside Derrick.
A man I recognized.
I looked closer.
Then froze.
Because I had seen him before.
Not in a photograph.
In real life.
At the restaurant.
A waiter.
Someone who had served Malik’s table.
Someone who had watched me touch Zion’s hand.
“No,” I whispered.
Malik looked at me.
“You know him?””
I nodded slowly.
“He was there.””
“Where?””
“The night I met you.””
His face changed.
The realization hit all of us.
Someone had been watching from the beginning.
Not after.
Before.
Renee covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Malik stared at the photograph.
“Derrick knew about Nia before we found the files.””
The room became silent.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was becoming clear.
Someone had been feeding him information.
Someone had been waiting.
Watching.
Planning.
And then Malik’s phone buzzed.
A message.
He opened it.
His face went cold.
“What?””
He handed me the phone.
The message contained one picture.
Zion.
Sleeping peacefully.
Taken from inside the house.
My blood froze.
Under the picture were six words.
*You found your daughter. I found your son.*
Malik grabbed the phone from my hand.
The father replaced the businessman again.
But this time, I wasn’t afraid of him.
Because I finally understood.
Malik Drayton wasn’t dangerous because he had power.
He was dangerous because someone had threatened the people he loved.
May you like
And now that I was one of those people…
the war had become mine too.
