Chapter 1: “Help Me, Daddy!”

“HELP ME, DADDY!””

My six-year-old daughter’s scream shattered the peaceful afternoon just as I stepped through the back door. By the time I reached the patio, my wife was standing beside our swimming pool with an empty wineglass in her hand, and my little girl was clinging to the pool’s edge, crying so hard she could barely breathe.

My name is David Carter. I’m forty years old, a father, and a man who had spent the last two years believing I had chosen the right woman to help me raise my daughter.

That afternoon, I learned how wrong a man could be.

The backyard looked like something from a real estate magazine. Sunlight glittered across the blue water. Cream-colored lounge chairs lined the stone patio.

Flowerpots filled with bright pink and white blooms stood beside the sliding glass doors. A patio table held a smartphone, a folded napkin, and a half-finished bottle of sparkling water.

Everything looked beautiful.

Except my daughter.

Lily wore her pink swimsuit, her small braids plastered against her forehead. Water ran down her cheeks, mixing with tears. Her little fingers curled around the pool ledge, and her shoulders shook with every desperate breath.

Beside her stood Vanessa, my thirty-six-year-old wife, dressed in an elegant cream blouse and fitted trousers.

She held her wineglass by the stem.

A red streak slid down Lily’s forehead and disappeared into the water.

For one terrible second, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Then Lily looked at me.

“Daddy!”” she screamed.

“Please!””

Vanessa set the empty glass on the patio table with a delicate clink.

“You ruined my perfume,” she snapped at Lily.

“Stay there!””

My stomach turned.

“What the hell is going on?”” I shouted.

Vanessa turned toward me, but she didn't look frightened or embarrassed. Instead, she lifted her chin as though I had interrupted an important conversation.

“David, don't start.””

I was already moving.

Lily's hands slipped against the wet stone. She tried to push herself upward, but her small arms trembled. Her mouth opened in another frightened cry.

I kicked off my shoes and dove into the pool.

The cold water closed over my head. I surfaced beside Lily and caught her beneath the arms just as she lost her grip.

“Daddy's here!”” I shouted.

“I've got you, baby!””

She wrapped both arms around my neck with such force that her little fingers dug into my skin.

“Don't let her take me!”” she sobbed.

Those words hit harder than anything else.

“I'm not letting anybody take you,” I told her, holding her tightly against my chest.

I carried her toward the shallow steps, keeping her face above the water. She coughed, gasped, and buried her face against my shoulder. Her body shook uncontrollably.

When my feet touched the pool floor, I lifted her into my arms and climbed out.

Vanessa stood exactly where she had been, her hands now resting on her hips.

“She needed to learn consequences,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Consequences for what?””

“She grabbed something that didn't belong to her.””

“She is six years old!””

“And she needs to understand boundaries, David.””

I wrapped my arms around Lily and reached for the large towel draped over a lounge chair. Her teeth chattered as I covered her shoulders.

“Look at me, sweetheart,” I whispered.

“Can you breathe okay?””

Lily nodded, then shook her head, unable to settle on an answer.

“Daddy, I was trying to get out.””

My eyes snapped toward Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa gave a dismissive laugh.

“She gets dramatic when she's upset. You know how children are.””

“No,” I said.

“I know how my daughter is.””

Lily clutched the front of my navy polo. Her face was pressed against my chest, and I could feel every ragged breath she took.

“She wouldn't let me,” Lily whispered.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Oh, for heaven's sake. I was standing right here.””

I lowered myself onto one knee beside the pool, keeping Lily tucked against me.

“Lily, sweetheart, tell me what happened.””

She glanced at Vanessa.

That tiny movement frightened me more than the screaming had.

My daughter had never been afraid to tell me when she broke a glass or spilled juice. She used to run into my arms with every scraped knee, every playground disagreement, every little injustice that felt enormous in a six-year-old's world.

Now she was checking whether she was allowed to speak.

“It's okay,” I whispered.

“You can tell Daddy.””

Lily swallowed.

“I wanted to get out.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“David, you're making this worse by encouraging her.””

I looked up at my wife.

“Take one more step toward her, and we are going to have a very different conversation.””

For the first time, Vanessa's expression changed.

It wasn't guilt.

It was anger that I had dared to challenge her in front of Lily.

She pointed toward the wet stone beside my knee.

“You have no idea what happened before you came outside.””

“Then tell me.””

“She sprayed my perfume. My expensive perfume. All over herself and the bathroom counter.””

“So you poured wine over her head?””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“I was trying to make her understand that actions have consequences.””

I looked at the red wine spreading across Lily's pink swimsuit.

My hands began to shake.

Not from the cold water.

From the realization that the woman I had trusted to care for my child was standing beside us, defending what she had done as though she had merely taken away a toy.

Lily tugged my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, baby?””

“Can we go inside?””

“Of course.””

I started to stand.

Then I noticed the security camera mounted beneath the patio roof, aimed directly at the swimming pool.

A small black lens.

A steady green indicator light.

I had installed that camera after a package disappeared from our porch. It recorded the backyard continuously and saved the footage to the home security app on my phone.

Vanessa followed my gaze.

For the first time that afternoon, she stopped talking.

I looked at the camera again.

Then at the smartphone lying on the patio table.

And finally, at my wife.

“Vanessa,” I said quietly, “how long was Lily in that water?””

She opened her mouth.

No answer came.

May you like

I reached for my phone.

And when I unlocked the security app, I saw that the recording was still available.
