Chapter 6: The Mother Who Came Back

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The woman standing in the doorway looked like a memory that had stepped out of a photograph.

The same eyes.

The same small scar above her eyebrow.

The same way she tilted her head when she was nervous.

A part of me recognized her before my mind could accept it.

My mother.

Elena.

Alive.

The wedding hall that had already felt unreal became something impossible.

I looked at Mark.

He was standing completely still.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Just broken.

Like he had known this moment would come someday and still wasn’t ready.

“Elena.””

Her name came out of his mouth like a prayer.

She took a step inside.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words.

After twenty-two years.

That was what she gave me.

Not an explanation.

Not an excuse.

An apology.

I laughed softly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because I didn’t know what else to do.

“You’re sorry?””

Her face crumpled.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know.””

She looked at me.

“I know I should have been there.””

“You weren’t.””

“I know.””

“I waited for you.””

The tears started falling before I could stop them.

“I waited for you at every birthday. Every holiday. Every graduation.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“How?””

The question came out sharper than I intended.

“How do you know?””

She looked down.

“Because I was there.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Mark looked at her.

“Elena…”

She shook her head.

“She deserves the truth.””

I stared at her.

“You were there?””

She nodded slowly.

“I watched you from a distance.””

The pain that moved through me was impossible to describe.

“You watched me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never came to me?””

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Mark.

And I hated that.

Because suddenly it felt like everyone knew the story except me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

Her expression changed.

“Yes.””

I crossed my arms.

“You left me with him.””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“I left you with Mark.””

The sentence hit differently.

I looked at Mark.

“He was the only person I trusted.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Elena stepped closer.

“Because Richard was trying to take you away from me.””

I shook my head.

“But you were my mother.””

“I know.””

“Wouldn’t a court have seen that?””

Her silence answered.

I swallowed.

“What happened?””

Elena sat down slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“Richard had money. Influence. Lawyers.””

She looked at the floor.

“And I had a dead boyfriend, no savings, and a story nobody wanted to hear.””

“Daniel.””

She nodded.

“Richard knew Daniel was your father.””

Mark looked at me.

“He knew from the beginning.””

Elena continued.

“He used it against me.””

“How?””

She took a shaky breath.

“He told me if I ever left, he would tell everyone I had lied about your birth. He said he would make me look unstable.””

I felt sick.

“He threatened to take me away from you.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He threatened to take you away from me.””

The difference hurt.

Because it meant she had spent years living without me too.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because I thought one day I would come back and explain everything.””

“When?””

Her face broke.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“I kept telling myself I needed more time. More proof. More money. More protection.””

She looked at Mark.

“And then years passed.””

I turned to Mark.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

The anger returned.

“You knew.””

Mark nodded.

“I did.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because every time I wanted to, I remembered your mother’s fear.””

I stepped back.

“You both decided what was best for me.””

Neither spoke.

“And nobody thought maybe I deserved the truth?””

Mark lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

The simplicity of his answer made it harder to stay angry.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

Elena reached into her bag.

“I brought something.””

I didn’t move.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Folded.

Worn.

“My letter.””

I stared.

“The one in the box?””

She nodded.

“I wrote another one after that.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew the first one might not be enough.””

She handed it to me.

I didn’t take it immediately.

“You could have given this to me yourself.””

The pain on her face was unbearable.

“I know.””

“Why tonight?””

She looked toward the door.

“Because Richard came back.””

The room became quiet.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked at Mark.

“He wasn’t supposed to find you.””

My heart raced.

“Find me?””

She nodded.

“Richard has spent years looking for ways to control the story.””

“What story?””

“The story of who you are.””

I looked at the photograph.

Daniel.

Mark.

My mother.

Me.

“I’m not Richard’s daughter.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

“But that’s not the only truth.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Mark.

“He knows something about Daniel.””

Mark’s face changed.

“What?””

Elena looked terrified.

“He always knew more than he admitted.””

I felt a chill.

“About Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.””

That scared me.

Because she was my mother.

She was supposed to have answers.

But even she was afraid.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Everyone looked.

This time it wasn’t from an unknown number.

It was from Richard.

*You really want the truth? Ask Mark what happened the night Daniel died.*

My blood turned cold.

I looked at Mark.

He didn’t move.

Elena whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Mark didn’t tell you?””

“Tell me what?””

Mark closed his eyes.

The silence was unbearable.

“What happened the night Daniel died?””

Mark didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known him, I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

“I was there.””

The words landed like a punch.

“What?””

Mark looked down.

“I was there the night Daniel died.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Ava—”

“No.””

My hands started shaking.

“You told me he was gone.””

“He was.””

“You said it was an accident.””

“It was.””

“Then why do you look like you’re guilty?””

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I made a promise.””

“To who?””

He looked at Elena.

Then at me.

“To Daniel.””

The room went completely silent.

“What promise?””

Mark reached for the wooden box.

His hands shook.

Inside was the document I had not seen.

The one hidden beneath all the memories.

He pulled it out.

“Ava…”

I stared at the paper.

“What is that?””

Mark swallowed.

“The reason your mother trusted me.””

I took the document.

The first line made my heart stop.

Because it wasn’t a letter.

It was a legal record.

And at the bottom was a signature.

Daniel’s signature.

May you like

But the date was impossible.

Because it was signed three days after the accident that supposedly killed him.
