Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Locked Door

The first thing I did was look toward Lily’s bedroom.

The second thing I did was reach for the nearest object I could use as a weapon.

A broken picture frame.

A ridiculous choice.

A piece of wood and glass against someone who had spent eighteen years hiding secrets.

But fear doesn’t make you logical.

Fear makes you human.

“Claire?””

Michael’s voice came through the phone.

I couldn’t answer.

Because there was a sound coming from the hallway.

A small sound.

A floorboard moving.

My apartment was old.

I knew every sound it made.

The pipes.

The elevator.

The neighbors walking above us.

That sound was different.

Someone was inside.

Eleanor stood slowly.

Her face had lost all color.

“Where is Lily?””

I whispered.

“My room.””

“Go to her.””

I looked at Eleanor.

“What?””

“Go.””

For the first time in eighteen years, I heard fear in her voice.

Not anger.

Not control.

Fear.

I moved toward the hallway.

The lights flickered.

Then the apartment went dark.

Lily screamed from her bedroom.

“Mom?””

“I’m here!””

I ran.

I reached her door and pulled it open.

She was sitting on her bed, holding her phone.

Her eyes were wide.

“Mom, what’s happening?””

I grabbed her hand.

“We’re leaving.””

“What?””

“Now.””

A shadow moved behind me.

I turned.

Eleanor stood in the doorway.

But she wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking past me.

At the hallway.

And then she whispered:

“Robert.””

My blood froze.

A man stepped out of the darkness.

Older.

Thin.

Carrying the weight of years on his face.

But I knew him.

Not personally.

From photographs.

From memorials.

From the stories people told about heroes.

Captain Robert Whitmore.

Eleanor’s dead husband.

Daniel’s father.

Impossible.

But standing in my home.

Alive.

Lily moved closer to me.

“Mom…”

I wrapped my arm around her.

Robert looked at her.

Then at me.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

My grip tightened.

“You’re dead.””

He gave a sad smile.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You lied to me.””

Robert looked at his wife.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“I protected you.””

“You destroyed everything.””

“I saved what I could.””

“Daniel died because of you.””

The room became silent.

Robert looked down.

And for a second, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Eleanor said.

Her voice was stronger now.

“I understand perfectly.””

Robert looked at Lily again.

And that terrified me more than anything.

“Stay away from her.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

He looked at me.

“Claire.””

The way he said my name made my stomach twist.

Like he had known me longer than I knew him.

“You have no idea what Daniel sacrificed.””

“Don’t talk about my husband.””

“He was my son.””

“He was my family.””

Robert’s expression changed.

Pain.

“You think I don’t know that?””

“Then why?””

The question exploded out of me.

“Why did you let him die?””

Silence.

Robert looked away.

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

“You know.””

Robert looked at Eleanor.

Then back at me.

“The truth is worse than you think.””

“Try me.””

He stepped closer.

I moved Lily behind me.

“Your husband discovered the evacuation wasn’t a failure.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“You know pieces.””

He looked at the recorder on the table.

“You know what Daniel wanted people to know.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel didn’t discover the truth.””

Robert paused.

“He discovered the lie.””

I frowned.

“What’s the difference?””

“The lie was the evacuation.””

My heart raced.

“The truth was?””

Robert looked at Lily.

“The ship was never supposed to survive.””

Nobody spoke.

“What?””

“The entire operation was designed to erase evidence.””

My mind went back to the burned box.

The missing names.

The survivors.

“Who ordered it?””

Robert looked at the ceiling.

Like he was searching for the courage to say the words.

Then:

“People above my rank.””

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“Still protecting them.””

“I’m protecting Lily.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You’re protecting yourself.””

Robert looked wounded.

But he didn’t argue.

That told me everything.

“You knew about me,” I said.

Robert looked at me.

“Yes.””

“You knew I survived.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Daniel saved me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone tell me nothing?””

Robert’s eyes moved to Lily.

“Because you were safer not knowing.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“I already did.””

Anger surged through me.

“You took my memories.””

Robert froze.

“I didn’t.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

I looked at Eleanor.

She looked away.

Then I understood.

“You all knew.””

Eleanor whispered:

“Claire…”

“You all knew.””

My voice became quieter.

“Daniel. Eleanor. Hayes. You.””

I looked at Robert.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Mom…”

I turned toward her.

And suddenly I knew.

She was the only person in that room who had never lied to me.

I couldn’t let the past steal her too.

“We’re leaving.””

Robert moved.

“Wait.””

“No.””

“You need to hear this.””

“I’ve heard enough.””

“No, Claire.””

His voice changed.

Urgent.

“If you leave now, they will find you.””

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer.

A loud sound came from outside.

Not a knock.

Not footsteps.

A crash.

Someone had broken the front entrance downstairs.

Robert looked toward the door.

“They’re here.””

Eleanor immediately moved toward the window.

“How many?””

Robert checked his watch.

“Enough.””

My heart pounded.

“Who are they?””

Robert looked at me.

“The people who have been cleaning this up for eighteen years.””

I looked at Lily.

Then at the door.

“What do they want?””

Robert’s answer was quiet.

“Her.””

My body went cold.

“Why?””

Robert looked at the old recorder.

Then at Lily.

“Because Daniel hid the final piece of evidence with the one person nobody would suspect.””

I stared.

“What evidence?””

Robert looked at Lily.

And whispered:

“The truth was never in the box.””

A crash came from the hallway outside the apartment.

Someone was forcing the door.

Lily held onto me.

“Mom, what’s happening?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because Robert said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel didn’t hide the evidence.””

He looked at Lily.

“He hid the key.””

The door shook.

Again.

Again.

Robert stepped back.

And then he said:

“Your daughter has been carrying the proof of what happened on that ship since the day she was born.””

May you like

The lights came back on.

And the first thing I saw was the apartment door beginning to crack open.
