Chapter 4: The Wife They Underestimated
Marcus showed up at Nia’s apartment three days later.
I knew he was coming because Nia looked out the window and immediately said:
“He looks like a man who just realized he lost control.””
I didn’t respond.
I just stood there.
Because part of me still wanted to see the man I married.
Not the man from the recording.
Not the man who discussed destroying me with his mother.
The old Marcus.
The one who used to dance with me in the kitchen.
The one who held my hand when my father passed away.
The one who promised me we were a team.
But when he knocked on the door, I knew that man wasn’t the one standing outside.
Nia opened the door halfway.
“What do you want?””
Marcus looked past her.
“Aaliyah.””
I stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
His face softened.
Too late.
“I just want to talk.””
“No.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“No?””
“No.””
He looked confused.
Like he couldn’t understand why I wasn’t immediately accepting his apology.
That was when I realized something.
Marcus wasn’t used to me having boundaries.
He was used to me having patience.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
“You mean moving my money?””
His face changed.
Just for a second.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“What are you talking about?””
I almost admired the confidence.
Almost.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.””
He looked at Nia.
Then back at me.
“Aaliyah, your sister is filling your head with things.””
There it was.
The blame.
The same pattern.
Everyone was responsible except him.
“I have records.””
His jaw tightened.
“What records?””
I didn’t answer.
Because Daniel had been very clear.
Don’t reveal everything.
Let them talk.
Let them expose themselves.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You’re angry right now.””
I almost smiled.
“You still don’t hear yourself.””
“What?””
“You think I’m angry because I found out.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“I’m hurt because you did it.””
For a moment, he looked like he might actually understand.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at it.
Denise.
He rejected the call.
That small movement told me everything.
They were scared.
Good.
“You need to come home,” Marcus said.
I shook my head.
“That house is not my home anymore.””
“Yes, it is.””
“No.””
His expression hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
There was the threat hiding underneath the concern.
I had heard it before.
I just finally recognized it.
“I’m filing for divorce.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
Marcus stared at me.
Like I had spoken another language.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“You’re throwing away seven years?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You did that when you decided I was someone you could use.””
He looked away.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Fear of consequences.
That night, Denise called me.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I wanted to hear what she would say.
“Aaliyah.””
Her voice was cold.
“You need to stop before you embarrass yourself.””
I leaned back.
“Embarrass myself?””
“Yes. You’re making accusations you can’t prove.””
I looked at the recording device sitting on my desk.
The same thing they used to trap me.
The thing that saved me.
“I think you’d be surprised what people can prove.””
There was silence.
A long silence.
Then Denise’s voice changed.
“You think you’re smarter than us?””
“No.””
I looked around Nia’s apartment.
At my temporary life.
At the uncertainty.
At the fear.
Then I said:
“I think I finally started listening to myself.””
She hung up.
The next morning, Daniel filed the paperwork.
Before Marcus and Denise could make their move.
Before they could use their fake documents.
Before they could paint me as the problem.
I walked into that courthouse with my head high.
Not because I wasn’t scared.
I was.
But courage isn’t the absence of fear.
It’s deciding someone else doesn’t get to control your future.
Later that afternoon, Marcus called again.
This time, his voice wasn’t angry.
It was desperate.
“Aaliyah, we need to talk about Mom.””
I frowned.
“What about her?””
A pause.
Then:
“She didn’t tell me everything.””
I sat up.
“What does that mean?””
His breathing changed.
Like he was standing at the edge of something.
“Aaliyah…”
“Yes?””
“I think she changed more documents than I knew.””
I closed my eyes.
Because I understood what was happening.
The person Marcus trusted most had become the person who could destroy him.
And now he had a choice.
Protect his mother.
May you like
Or tell the truth.
Either way, the family that built a trap for me was starting to fall into it themselves.
