Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Disappearance

Danielle’s first instinct was to run.

Not because Daniel was a stranger.

That would have been easier.

Strangers were simple.

You saw danger.

You reacted.

But Daniel was the man who used to kiss Isaiah’s forehead every morning before work.

The man who painted the nursery walls before their son was born.

The man who cried harder than she did when they first heard Isaiah’s heartbeat.

The man whose betrayal would hurt more than any stranger’s attack ever could.

“Stay away from him.””

Danielle stepped backward, keeping Isaiah behind her.

Daniel lifted both hands slowly.

“Danielle, I’m not here to hurt you.””

“Then why are you here?””

His eyes moved toward Isaiah.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Pain.

Fear.

Regret.

But something else was there too.

Something Danielle couldn’t name.

“Because I knew this day would come.””

Isaiah grabbed Danielle’s hand tighter.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

He was shaking.

That was enough.

Danielle turned back to Daniel.

“You don’t get to walk into this house after ten years and act like you’re protecting us.””

“I’m not acting.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The answer came so quickly that it shocked her.

Daniel looked down.

“I did.””

The admission hung in the darkness.

For years, Danielle had imagined him denying everything.

She imagined screaming matches.

Excuses.

Blame.

But she had never imagined him simply admitting it.

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I was afraid.””

Danielle laughed bitterly.

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“You weren’t the one who lost a child.””

His eyes closed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I do.””

The pain in his voice made her pause.

But only for a second.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

The fact that he kept agreeing almost made her angrier.

“Stop saying you know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I know because I lost him too.””

Silence.

The words hit the room like a stone.

Isaiah stared at him.

“You lost me?””

Daniel’s expression broke.

For the first time, Danielle saw something she recognized.

Not guilt.

Grief.

“I never stopped looking for you.””

Isaiah’s face hardened.

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

Daniel had no answer.

And that was the worst answer of all.

Danielle stepped forward.

“Tell us everything.””

Daniel looked toward the windows.

“No.””

Her anger flashed.

“No?””

“Not here.””

“You already told me they’re watching.””

“They are.””

“Then start talking.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

Danielle moved closer.

“My son disappeared for ten years.””

Her voice lowered.

“I have spent every single day trying to understand what happened.””

She pointed toward Isaiah.

“He spent ten years without me.””

Her eyes burned.

“So you are going to explain.””

Daniel looked at Isaiah.

Then slowly nodded.

“Okay.””

He sat down on the edge of the chair.

For a moment, he looked older than Danielle had ever seen him.

“I need you to understand one thing.””

“What?””

“Isaiah wasn’t taken because someone wanted money.””

Danielle frowned.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at the boy.

“Because of who he was.””

Danielle felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Before Isaiah was born, I worked for a company called Northbridge Research.””

Danielle froze.

She remembered the name.

Not because it was important.

Because it was the reason Daniel was always gone.

Long hours.

Secret meetings.

Late nights.

She had asked him what he did there.

He always gave the same answer.

“Nothing dangerous.””

Now she wondered how many times he had lied.

“What kind of company was it?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“They handled private medical research.””

“Medical research?””

“Yes.””

“And Isaiah was involved?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

Then slower:

“Not at first.””

Danielle’s stomach twisted.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Isaiah.

“After he was born, we discovered something.””

“What?””

“Isaiah had a rare genetic marker.””

Danielle stared.

“What are you talking about?””

“Something in his DNA.””

She shook her head.

“This makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“Are you saying someone took our son because of his DNA?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Danielle felt the room spinning.

“No.””

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you didn’t.””

Daniel looked down.

“No.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

Danielle’s voice became cold.

“You thought you could handle our child’s kidnapping?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought I could fix it before you ever knew.””

The anger inside her burned.

“You thought you could fix it?””

“Yes.””

“You kept me away from my son because you wanted to play hero?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought if I told you, they would take you too.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“People with power.””

Danielle shook her head.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

“No, Daniel. It’s a story.””

She pointed at the door.

“Leave.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Danielle—”

“Leave.””

Isaiah suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Both adults looked at him.

The boy stared at Daniel.

“You knew where I was.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know the exact location.””

“You just said you looked for me.””

“I did.””

“Then where?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I found clues.””

Isaiah’s voice became sharper.

“Ten years of clues?””

Daniel flinched.

The boy looked down.

“I used to think my parents forgot me.””

Danielle’s heart broke.

Daniel looked devastated.

“I never forgot you.””

“But you weren’t there.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed him.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“You’re right.””

A strange sound came from outside.

A car engine.

All three of them turned.

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

“They found us.””

Danielle moved toward the window.

“How?””

Daniel stood.

“Because I followed the signal.””

“What signal?””

But before he could answer, a bright light swept across the living room.

Headlights.

A vehicle had stopped outside.

Daniel grabbed Danielle’s arm.

“Where’s the back exit?””

She pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

“Danielle, we don’t have time.””

“You don’t get to give orders.””

A loud knock echoed through the house.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Isaiah’s face went white.

“No.””

Danielle looked at him.

“What?””

“That’s how they knocked.””

Her blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Isaiah whispered:

“The people who took me.””

Another knock.

Then a voice from outside.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Danielle.””

She stepped closer to the door.

The voice continued.

“I know you’re in there.””

Daniel moved in front of her.

“No.””

Danielle stared at him.

“You know her?””

His face turned pale.

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The woman outside spoke again.

“Open the door, Danielle.””

A pause.

Then:

“I think it’s time you met the woman who raised your son.””

Isaiah grabbed Danielle’s hand.

And Danielle looked at Daniel.

Because his reaction told her everything.

May you like

He wasn’t scared of the woman outside.

He was terrified of what she was about to reveal.
