Chapter 4: The Woman They Tried to Erase
For forty years, Vincent Moretti had believed he was the only person still searching for Elena Rossi.
He was wrong.
Someone else had been waiting.
Watching.
Keeping track.
And now they knew her daughter was standing in his restaurant.
“Say it again,” Vincent ordered.
The chef looked terrified.
“I don’t know if I should.””
Vincent stepped closer.
“Say it.””
The chef looked at Molly.
“I got a call from someone asking about Elena.””
Molly felt her stomach twist.
“Who?””
The chef’s voice dropped.
“Anthony Bellini.””
Vincent’s face went blank.
That scared Molly more than anger would have.
Because anger meant emotion.
This was something else.
Recognition.
A memory.
A threat.
“I thought he was dead,” the chef whispered.
Vincent stared ahead.
“So did I.””
Molly looked between them.
“Who is Anthony Bellini?””
Neither man answered immediately.
That silence told her enough.
She had spent her whole life around ordinary problems.
Rent.
Bills.
Jobs.
Trying to build a future.
She had never imagined her mother’s past involved men whose names could make powerful people go quiet.
Vincent slowly walked toward the kitchen entrance.
“Everyone leaves.””
The chef blinked.
“Mr. Moretti—”
“Now.””
The chef nodded.
Within moments, the remaining staff disappeared from the area.
Molly stayed.
Vincent noticed.
“You should leave too.””
“No.””
His eyes moved toward her.
“No?””
She shook her head.
“You brought my mother back into my life five minutes ago. I’m not walking away now.””
Vincent studied her.
There was frustration in his face.
But there was also something else.
Respect.
“You don’t understand what you’re stepping into.””
Molly looked at him.
“You don’t understand what I’ve already lived through.””
The answer caught him off guard.
She continued.
“My mother died without ever telling me the truth. I spent years wondering why she kept pieces of herself hidden from me. Why she looked sad whenever someone mentioned the past.””
Her voice softened.
“I deserve to know who she was.””
Vincent looked away.
Because that was the same thing Elena had once told him.
Years ago.
Before everything fell apart.
The same determination.
The same refusal to accept half-truths.
“You really are her daughter.””
Molly crossed her arms.
“I know.””
For the first time that night, Vincent almost smiled.
Almost.
Then the sound of a car pulling up outside changed everything.
Vincent looked toward the window.
His body became completely still.
Molly noticed.
“What is it?””
He did not answer.
He moved toward the restaurant entrance.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The man who had faced enemies, lawsuits, betrayals, and threats without fear now looked like he was preparing to face something far more dangerous.
The past.
A few seconds later, the front doors opened.
A man entered.
Older.
Elegant.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
He looked like someone who had spent his whole life around money and power.
But his eyes were different.
His eyes were searching.
They landed on Vincent.
Then moved to Molly.
And the moment he saw her, something changed.
Recognition.
Shock.
Fear.
“You found her,” the man said.
Molly’s breath caught.
Vincent stepped in front of her.
“Anthony.””
The man smiled faintly.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“For forty years, you thought Elena was gone.””
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
Anthony looked at Molly.
“But she left you something.””
Molly frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Anthony ignored her.
His attention stayed on Vincent.
“She knew one day someone would come looking.””
Vincent’s voice became dangerous.
“Where is Elena?””
Anthony’s expression shifted.
Almost like pity.
“You still don’t understand.””
The restaurant was silent.
Nobody moved.
Then Anthony looked at Molly.
“Your mother wasn’t running away from Vincent Moretti.””
Molly stared.
“Then who was she running from?””
Anthony’s answer came quietly.
“She was running from all of us.””
Vincent’s face darkened.
“What did you do?””
Anthony looked at him.
“What we had to do.””
Molly felt the room closing around her.
Forty years.
A missing mother.
A hidden recipe.
A photograph.
A secret nobody wanted uncovered.
And now a stranger claiming her mother had spent her life hiding from powerful people.
Anthony turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“Vincent.””
Vincent did not respond.
Anthony looked back.
“If you really want the truth, ask yourself one question.””
A pause.
“Why did Elena leave her daughter with no answers instead of telling her who her father was?””
Molly froze.
Vincent froze.
And Anthony walked away.
Leaving behind a question that changed everything.

A question Molly had never thought to ask.
Who was her father?
