Chapter 10: The Name on the Diploma

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*If you want to meet your brother, come alone.*

Then the second line appeared.

*Bring the woman you call Mom.*

My mother read it over my shoulder.

Her face went completely still.

“No,” Sarah whispered.

I looked at her.

“You know who sent it.””

She didn't answer.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“Ethan, there are things I should have told you.””

“Then tell me now.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“We're not letting you go alone.””

I shook my head.

“They specifically said alone.””

“That's a trap,” Marcus said.

“Maybe.””

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

“Or maybe someone wants Sarah.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He turned the screen toward Vanessa.

She stared at the message.

Then she whispered, “The same number sent Denise's final message.””

My stomach tightened.

“What final message?””

Vanessa reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found it in my mother's safe.””

She handed it to me.

The handwriting was shaky.

*If Ethan ever learns the truth, take Sarah to the old Carter house.*

Underneath was a second sentence.

*The boy who survived will be waiting.*

I looked up.

“The Carter house?””

Daniel nodded.

“My father’s old estate.””

“Is anyone there?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“There hasn't been anyone there for years.””

My mother suddenly whispered, “There is.””

Everyone turned.

Sarah's eyes were fixed on the paper.

“Someone has been living there.””

“Who?”” I asked.

She didn't answer.

I felt anger rise again.

“Mom, no more secrets.””

She looked at me.

Then finally said:

“Your brother.””

We left the school through a side entrance.

The graduation ceremony continued without me.

My diploma sat somewhere backstage.

My valedictorian speech remained unread.

None of it mattered anymore.

Sarah sat beside me in the car.

She held her hands together tightly in her lap.

I drove.

For the first ten minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then I said, “Tell me everything.””

She stared through the windshield.

“After the hospital fire, I was told you were the only baby who survived.””

“But Elias survived.””

“Yes.””

“How did you find out?””

“Years later, Denise contacted me.””

“Your mother?””

She nodded.

“She said the hospital had falsified the records. She said one baby had been moved before the fire.””

“Why?””

“Because Charles believed one of the twins wasn't biologically connected to the Carter family.””

I glanced at her.

“Why would he care?””

“Money.””

I waited.

She continued.

“Your father's family owned several businesses. There was a trust.””

“What kind of trust?””

“One that could only pass to a biological Carter descendant.””

I understood.

“And the twins complicated that.””

“Yes.””

“So Charles wanted to know which one was his biological heir.””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“But he didn't know either of you was his blood.””

I frowned.

“Then whose children were we?””

She looked at me.

“Marcus and Angela.””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“So Marcus really is my father.””

“For one of you.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Sarah turned toward me.

“Ethan, you and Elias are twins.””

She swallowed.

“But only one of you is Marcus's biological son.””

I pulled the car to the side of the road.

“What?””

“The DNA test was meant to determine which baby belonged to Marcus.””

“And?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I never saw the result.””

Vanessa had told us the test belonged to Elias.

But that didn't explain which twin was Marcus's son.

I looked at my mother.

“Then why did you take me?””

She began crying.

“Because Charles came to the hospital.””

“And?””

“He told me he would kill whichever baby wasn't useful to him.””

My blood turned cold.

“So you took me.””

“I took one baby.””

“Why me?””

“You were the baby closest to the door.””

I stared at her.

“You didn't know which one you were taking?””

“No.””

“Then how did you know you had me?””

She reached into her purse.

Her fingers trembled as she pulled out an old hospital bracelet.

I took it.

The faded letters were barely visible.

*ETHAN REED.*

I looked at her.

“You changed my name.””

“Yes.””

“Why Carter?””

“Because I needed Charles to believe you belonged to him.””

“And Elias?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Angela took him.””

I froze.

“Angela was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't know.””

A horn sounded behind us.

I started the car.

We drove the rest of the way in silence.

The old Carter house stood at the end of a long private road.

The gates were rusted.

The mansion itself was dark.

Except for one upstairs window.

A light was on.

My mother stared at it.

“He's here.””

I parked.

Marcus had followed us despite my instructions.

Daniel and Vanessa stayed in the second car.

I stepped out.

Sarah caught my wrist.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

She looked terrified.

“If he asks you who you are, don't answer.””

“Why?””

“Because he already knows.””

We walked toward the front door.

It opened before we touched it.

A young Black man stood inside.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same scar.

My breath caught.

He stared at me.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then he smiled.

Not the crooked smile from Marcus's photograph.

A different one.

One I somehow recognized.

He looked at Sarah.

“You brought her.””

She nodded.

He looked back at me.

“Ethan?””

My voice failed.

He stepped forward.

“I'm Elias.””

I stared at him.

He looked exactly like me.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“You've got our father's eyes.””

Marcus stepped into the doorway behind me.

Elias looked past my shoulder.

His expression changed.

“Dad?””

Marcus stopped.

Tears filled his eyes.

“No…”

Elias whispered, “It really is you.””

Marcus reached for him.

Elias didn't move.

Then Sarah began sobbing.

Elias looked at her.

“You.””

She froze.

“You're the woman who took my brother.””

I turned toward Sarah.

“What?””

Elias pulled an old photograph from his pocket.

It showed two babies.

One had the same hospital bracelet I had just seen.

The other wore a different bracelet.

*ELIAS REED.*

Elias pointed at the photograph.

“Denise told me everything before she died.””

Sarah's face crumpled.

“What did she tell you?””

“That she switched the babies.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Elias.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Sarah didn't take you.””

My mother stopped breathing.

“Then who did?””

Elias turned toward the staircase.

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark suit.

My heart stopped.

I knew that face.

The photograph from our hallway.

Charles Carter.

But Charles Carter had been dead for eighteen years.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Sarah.

And smiled.

“You were always the clever one,” he said.

Sarah screamed.

Marcus moved forward.

Daniel shouted from behind us.

“Ethan, get out!””

Charles raised one hand.

“Don't worry.””

He looked at me.

“I didn't bring you here to hurt you.””

“Then why?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because today you finally turned eighteen.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a sealed envelope.

“The trust is now yours.””

I stared at him.

“What trust?””

Charles looked at Elias.

Then at Marcus.

Then finally at Sarah.

“The Carter family fortune.””

He held the envelope toward me.

“And the DNA result that proves which one of you is my grandson.””

My fingers closed around the envelope.

For eighteen years, everyone had lied about my name.

About my father.

About my brother.

About the night I was born.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

At the top:

*PATERNITY TEST — ETHAN REED*

My eyes moved down the page.

*Probability of paternity: 99.99%*

Underneath was the father's name.

*Marcus Reed.*

I looked at Marcus.

Then at Elias.

He was crying.

Charles's smile vanished.

Because he had expected a different result.

And suddenly I understood the final truth.

The DNA test had never been meant to identify my father.

It had been meant to identify *which twin Charles could legally control.*

I looked at Elias.

“You're my brother.””

He nodded.

I looked at Sarah.

“You're my mother.””

She covered her face.

Then I looked at Marcus.

“My father.””

He broke down in tears.

And finally I turned toward Charles.

“You lost.””

His expression hardened.

“No.””

I held up the result.

“You spent eighteen years trying to find the wrong heir.””

Elias stepped beside me.

For the first time in our lives, the two of us stood together.

Charles stared at us.

Then I tore the DNA result in half.

“You wanted one of us.””

I looked at my brother.

“You got both.””

Behind us, sirens began approaching.

Daniel had already called the police.

Vanessa stood beside Sarah.

Marcus put one hand on my shoulder.

And somewhere across town, the graduation ceremony was ending.

I never gave my valedictorian speech.

I never walked across that stage.

But as Elias and I stood side by side beneath the old Carter chandelier, I realized something.

A diploma could tell me what I'd accomplished.

A DNA test could tell me where I'd come from.

But neither could decide who I was.

I was Ethan Reed.

Elias's brother.

Marcus's son.

May you like

Sarah's child.

And for the first time in eighteen years, nobody else got to write my name.
