Chapter 9: The Guardian Who Became the Enemy
The video ended.
But nobody moved.
The final words stayed trapped in the room.
*“I’ll bring you Caleb.””*
I stared at Daniel.
The man who had walked into my life claiming to be the person protecting me.
The man my father trusted.
The man who knew my name before I ever told him.
My mind refused to accept it.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me that isn’t real.””
His face had changed.
The sadness was gone.
The tired protector was gone.
Now he just looked like a man who had finally been caught carrying a secret too heavy to hide.
“Caleb…”
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“You don’t get to say my name like you know me.””
The room was silent.
Reaper stood between us.
Not because he was protecting Daniel.
Because he was protecting me.
“Daniel,” Reaper said.
His voice was different.
Cold.
“You have five seconds.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I can explain.””
“Four.””
“Reaper, listen—”
“Three.””
Daniel looked around the room.
At the bikers.
At the photograph.
At me.
Then he slowly raised his hands.
“I never wanted this.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Never wanted what?””
Daniel looked down.
“The role I was forced to play.””
My heart pounded.
“Forced?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You watched me my whole life.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
Everyone froze.
Reaper stared.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“Michael knew the truth would destroy you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“It is.””
“No, it isn’t.””
My voice cracked.
“My entire life people have been deciding what I can handle.””
I pointed at the screen.
“You.””
“My mother.””
“Reaper.””
Everyone went quiet.
“I’m the person this is happening to, and I’m the last person anyone tells.””
My mother started crying.
But I didn’t stop.
“I deserved the truth.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You did.””
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
He closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer surprised me.
“Afraid of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I stared.
“You weren’t even in my life.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I was.””
The room became quiet.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I was there.””
My anger paused.
“What do you mean?””
“Your first day of school.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“I was across the street.””
I stared at him.
“Your first baseball game.””
He looked down.
“I was in the parking lot.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You watched me?””
“Yes.””
“That’s not protecting someone.””
His face fell.
“That’s what it felt like.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s what hiding feels like.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
Daniel looked broken.
But I didn’t know if I cared anymore.
Then Reaper stepped forward.
“Explain the video.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I can.””
“Start.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The video was real.””
Everyone reacted.
My stomach dropped.
“But it doesn’t show what happened.””
Marcus frowned.
“It shows you meeting Kane.””
“Yes.””
“And saying you would bring Caleb.””
“Yes.””
Reaper’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I was trying to get close enough to destroy him.””
Nobody moved.
The explanation sounded impossible.
“You expect us to believe that?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the screen.
“Because Michael knew nobody would.””
He walked toward the computer.
“Play the video again.””
Nobody moved.
Then Reaper nodded.
One biker restarted it.
The footage played.
Daniel meeting Victor.
The words.
The promise.
But this time, Daniel watched carefully.
“Pause.””
The biker stopped.
Daniel pointed.
“Look.””
Reaper stepped closer.
“What?””
“The reflection.””
Everyone stared.
In the dark glass behind Victor, there was a reflection.
A second person.
A shadow.
Daniel pointed.
“That’s why I was there.””
Marcus looked closer.
“Who is that?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Thomas.””
The room froze.
“What?””
Reaper stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s what Kane wanted everyone to believe.””
I looked at the screen.
The reflection was blurry.
But there was a figure.
Someone standing behind Victor.
“Thomas was alive?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
My head spun.
“But you said he disappeared.””
“He did.””
“Then how?””
Daniel looked at Reaper.
“Because he was working undercover.””
Nobody spoke.
Reaper’s expression changed.
“Michael knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was the only one who did.””
The pieces began shifting.
Everything we believed was wrong.
Again.
“Then why did my father say Thomas was the traitor?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Because Michael was trying to protect him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He knew someone would find the evidence.””
Daniel pointed at the flash drive.
“So he left clues that would make people chase the wrong person.””
Reaper looked confused.
“Michael sacrificed Thomas’s reputation?””
Daniel nodded.
“To save his life.””
The room became silent.
My father’s entire story was turning upside down.
The enemy wasn’t Thomas.
The enemy wasn’t Daniel.
Then who?
“Where is Thomas now?””
Daniel looked away.
That answer was immediate.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“Prison.””
Everyone reacted.
“What?””
“He has been there for seventeen years.””
I stared.
“Seventeen years?””
Daniel nodded.
“Kane made sure everyone believed Thomas was guilty.””
Reaper looked devastated.
“He let us hate him.””
“He had no choice.””
“Where is he?””
Daniel looked at the computer.
“Before I answer that…”
The screen flickered.
Everyone turned.
Another file appeared.
This time, the name was different.
*MICHAEL’S FINAL MESSAGE.*
Daniel stepped back.
“That wasn’t supposed to open yet.””
Reaper looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel stared.
“Because Michael set it to open only after all four people were together.””
I looked around.
“All four?””
Daniel nodded.
“Me.””
“Reaper.””
“Angela.””
“And you.””
My heart raced.
“My father knew we would all be here?””
“Yes.””
Reaper opened the file.
The video loaded.
My father appeared again.
But this time, he looked different.
Not scared.
Determined.
“If you are seeing this, then you found each other.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“Good.””
My chest tightened.
“Because it means Kane failed.””
Reaper leaned closer.
Michael continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“Victor Kane was never the biggest threat.””
The room froze.
“He was only the person everyone could see.””
My father looked down.
“The real danger was someone who spent years making sure nobody would look deeper.””
The video glitched.
Then he said:
“The person who destroyed my life was not my enemy.””
A pause.
“He was my brother.””
The room went silent.
Reaper whispered:
“Brother?””
Michael continued.
“Not by blood.””
The video showed a picture.
A younger Michael.
Reaper.
Daniel.
Thomas.
And another man.
A fifth person.
Someone I had never seen.
My father’s voice continued.
“The man who betrayed me was the one who taught me how to survive.””
I stared at the photograph.
The unknown man.
The missing piece.
Then Michael said the name.
And Reaper immediately went pale.
“James.””
Nobody spoke.
Because Reaper knew that name.
The video continued.
“James created Kane’s empire from the inside.””
My father looked serious.
“He was the first Dust Reaper.””
My heart stopped.
The first.
Not Thomas.
Not Reaper.
Someone before all of them.
“He taught us loyalty.””
My father’s expression changed.
“And then he taught Victor Kane how to break it.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then the clubhouse door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A cane in one hand.
And a smile I recognized immediately.
Not because I had met him.
Because I had seen that smile before.
On Victor Kane.
The man looked around the room.
Then his eyes stopped on me.
“Caleb Johnson.””
My blood went cold.
Reaper stepped forward.
“No.””
The old man smiled.
“Hello, Reaper.””
The bikers raised their weapons.
The man didn’t care.
He simply looked at me.
“I’ve waited eleven years to meet you.””
I couldn’t move.
“Who are you?””
The old man smiled.
“My name is James.””
He took one step inside.
“And your father left me something.””
A pause.
“Something he never wanted you to find.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
May you like
And James whispered:
“The truth about why Michael really disappeared.””
