Chapter 4: The Family That Wanted My Name
By the next day, the story had spread.
Not the truth.
Not yet.
Just rumors.
People always wanted the dramatic version first.
A broken engagement.
A powerful businessman.
A wealthy family scandal.
My phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
Investors.
Friends.
Reporters.
People who had never called me before suddenly wanted to “check in.””
That was how I learned something my father understood better than anyone.
When things are good, everyone wants to stand beside you.
When things fall apart, you find out who was only standing near you for the view.
I ignored most of the calls.
The only person I needed to speak with was my younger sister, Maya.
Maya arrived at the estate that afternoon.
She walked through the front door wearing jeans, a university sweatshirt, and the same determined expression she had worn since she was a child.
She hugged me immediately.
Then she stepped back.
“Tell me everything.””
I smiled slightly.
“You don’t even want coffee first?””
“No.””
She looked toward the garage.
“I heard about Major.””
That hurt.
The whole world knew before we had even processed it ourselves.
I led her inside.
When she saw Major lying on his blanket, her eyes filled with tears.
“Oh my God.””
She knelt beside him.
“Baby boy.””
Major lifted his head.
Maya had been eleven years old when my father brought him home.
She used to put little bandanas around his neck and pretend he was a celebrity.
Seeing her with him reminded me that this wasn’t just about me.
This was about all of us.
After we sat down, I showed her the evidence.
She read through the documents silently.
Then she looked up.
“Camille knew?””
“Yes.””
Maya shook her head.
“I never trusted her.””
I looked at her.
“You never told me that.””
“I did.””
“When?””
She gave me a look.
“Damon, I told you three different times.””
I frowned.
“You said she was too perfect.””
“Exactly.””
“That’s not a crime.””
“No.””
Maya leaned forward.
“But people who are pretending to be perfect usually have something they don’t want you to see.””
Her words stayed with me.
Because she was right.
I just didn’t want to hear it.
Later that evening, Rebecca called with an update.
“We found something.””
I answered immediately.
“What?””
“Security footage.””
“From where?””
“The estate.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Your father installed hidden cameras after some equipment disappeared from his office.””
I sat up.
“What did they show?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Camille entering the garage several times.””
I closed my eyes.
“When?””
“Before Major was locked inside.””
The room felt colder.
“She was there?””
“Yes.””
“Alone?””
Rebecca paused.
“No.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who was with her?””
There was a long silence.
Then she answered.
“Victor Laurent.””
Everything went quiet.
My father’s enemy wasn’t just outside my family.
He had been standing in my home.
Walking through my halls.
Eating at my table.
Pretending to care about my future.
I ended the call and walked outside.
The night air was cold against my face.
Behind me, the garage light was still on.
The same place where Major almost died.
The same place where my father’s final message waited.
Jasmine stepped outside.
“You okay?””
I looked back at the house.
“No.””
She nodded.
“Good.””
I looked at her.
She smiled sadly.
“Sometimes admitting you’re not okay is the first honest thing you’ve done in a long time.””
That hit harder than she knew.
Because I had spent years being strong for everyone.
For my employees.
For my family.
For the King name.
But I had ignored the one person who needed protection.
Myself.
The next morning, Rebecca filed the first legal actions against Victor Laurent’s companies.
We weren’t going public yet.
Not until we had everything.
My father taught me patience.
Revenge was emotional.
Justice was strategic.
And I wanted justice.
Before the day ended, I made one more decision.
I stood in the old garage and looked around.
The place where someone tried to hide a truth.
The place where someone tried to erase a life.
It would not remain that way.
I called Jasmine.
“I need you to manage something for me.””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“This garage.””
She laughed softly.
“You want me to manage a garage?””
“Not a garage.””
I looked at Major.
“A shelter.””
Her smile disappeared.
“A shelter?””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
“My father spent his life helping people who had nowhere else to go.””
I knelt beside Major.
“Animals deserve the same.””
Jasmine touched her heart.
“You’re serious.””
“I am.””
The old garage had been a place of cruelty.
I wanted it to become a place of healing.
A place where abandoned animals could find what Major almost lost.
A chance.
Jasmine nodded slowly.
“I’ll do it.””
And for the first time since the engagement party, I felt something besides anger.
Purpose.
But I also knew something else.
Victor Laurent wasn’t finished.
Neither was Camille.
They had spent years planning their way into my family.
May you like
They weren’t going to walk away quietly.
And now that I knew the truth, they would do anything to bury it.
