Chapter 6: The Escape Nobody Expected
Evelyn Carter had spent thirty years making people underestimate her.
That was her greatest talent.
She didn’t need people to love her.
She needed them to doubt themselves.
She needed them to think:
Maybe I misunderstood.
Maybe she didn’t mean it that way.
Maybe she’s still my mother.
That was how she survived.
That was how she controlled everyone around her.
But now, the world was finally seeing her clearly.
And that made her dangerous.
Three days after the hospital incident, detectives found Marcus Bell’s abandoned vehicle near an old property outside town.
The property belonged to my mother.
A place I had never heard about.
A place she had never mentioned.
Of course she had another secret.
People like Evelyn always did.
Officer Daniels asked me not to come.
I went anyway.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed to see the truth with my own eyes.
The property sat behind a long dirt road surrounded by trees. An old farmhouse stood in the distance.
Rebecca looked out the window.
“She brought us here once.””
I turned.
“What?””
“When I was little.””
My heart stopped.
“She knew you existed?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She always knew.””
The words hurt.
Because they meant my entire life had been a choice.
She didn’t forget Rebecca.
She erased her.
Police searched the farmhouse.
Inside, they found files.
Pictures.
Documents.
A hidden room.
And something that made everyone stop.
A nursery.
Not an old nursery.
A new one.
Painted.
Decorated.
Waiting.
My knees felt weak.
“She was planning this,” I whispered.
Daniels nodded.
“She wanted the baby.””
Not Maya.
Not my family.
The baby.
Because in Evelyn’s mind, my daughter wasn’t a person.
She was something she could possess.
Something she could control.
A legacy.
A replacement.
A way to continue the family name exactly how she wanted.
Then one officer shouted from outside.
“We found someone!””
Everyone ran.
Behind the farmhouse was an old shed.
Smaller than the one where Maya had been trapped.
Inside was Marcus.
Alive.
Barely conscious.
He had been tied up.
The person we thought was Evelyn’s partner had become her victim too.
When Marcus woke up, he told police everything.
Evelyn had manipulated him for years.
She convinced him my father had ruined his life.
She convinced him Caleb needed to be protected from “bad influences.””
She convinced him he was helping save a family.
Until she no longer needed him.
“She said she was going to take the baby and leave,” Marcus whispered.
My blood ran cold.
“Where?””
He looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
The detectives searched the property again.
This time, they found something hidden beneath the floorboards.
A phone.
Evelyn’s phone.
There were messages.
Plans.
Addresses.
And one recent location.
Maya’s hospital.
My heart stopped.
“She’s going back.””
Officer Daniels looked at me.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“She’s not going back.””
He showed me the screen.
“She’s already there.””
The world went silent.
For a second, I couldn’t move.
Then everything happened at once.
Police vehicles started moving.
Radios filled the air.
People shouted instructions.
And all I could think about was Maya.
My wife.
My daughter.
The two people Evelyn Carter had decided belonged to her.
I called Maya.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
The third time, someone picked up.
But it wasn’t Maya.
A quiet voice whispered:
“Caleb?””
My blood froze.
It was my mother.
And then she said the words I would never forget.
May you like
“You should have listened when I told you to choose me.””
The line went dead.
