Chapter 11: The Price of Silence
I nearly dropped my phone.
Robert grabbed my arm.
"Marcus, what happened?""
"Vanessa has Lily.""
"Where?""
"At Mom's house.""
Robert immediately called the police.
I called Grace.
She answered on the first ring.
"Marcus?""
"Where is Lily?""
A pause.
"She's upstairs with Vanessa. She said she wanted to talk to her.""
"Why did you let her?""
"She told me you had agreed!""
I closed my eyes.
Vanessa had used my name again.
"Grace, listen carefully. Get out of that house.""
"What?""
"Take Mom if you can. Don't confront Vanessa. Let the police handle it.""
"Marcus, what's happening?""
"Just do it.""
I ended the call.
Robert was already speaking to the dispatcher.
He gave them the address, explained that a twelve-year-old child might be in danger, and requested immediate assistance.
I drove back with the evidence secured in the car.
Every red light felt like an hour.
When I reached the property, two police vehicles were already outside.
I ran toward the entrance.
An officer stopped me.
"Sir, are you the father?""
"Yes. Where is my daughter?""
"We're speaking with the people inside.""
"Please. She's twelve.""
The officer nodded.
"We understand.""
I could hear voices from upstairs.
Then Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.
She was holding Lily's hand.
My daughter looked terrified.
"Marcus," Vanessa called.
I stepped forward.
"Let her go.""
Vanessa smiled.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Let her go.""
She looked toward the officers.
"This is a family disagreement. My husband has been behaving irrationally.""
One officer approached.
"Ma'am, we need you to step away from the child.""
Vanessa tightened her grip.
"She's my stepdaughter.""
"Please release her hand.""
Lily suddenly pulled away and ran downstairs.
I caught her in my arms.
She buried her face against my chest.
"Dad!""
I held her tightly.
"It's okay. I've got you.""
Vanessa began shouting.
"She's been manipulated! Marcus has been filling her head with lies!""
One officer stepped between us.
"Ma'am, please remain calm.""
Then Patricia came down the hallway.
She was carrying my mother's medication bag.
"Marcus!""
I turned.
"Where's Mom?""
"She's safe. Grace took her to the hospital.""
I exhaled.
Thank God.
The officers questioned Vanessa separately.
I stayed with Lily.
She was shaking so badly that I wrapped my jacket around her shoulders.
"What happened, sweetheart?""
Vanessa had taken her upstairs and told her that Grandpa's inheritance belonged to the family.
When Lily refused to hand over the blue envelope, Vanessa became angry.
"She said Grandpa had promised the money to Uncle Daniel," Lily whispered.
I shook my head.
"He didn't.""
"She said if I didn't give it to her, you would go to jail.""
I kissed her forehead.
"None of that is true.""
Lily looked up.
"She also said something about Mom.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She said Grandpa never wanted you to marry her.""
My throat tightened.
"Did she explain why?""
Lily shook her head.
Then she whispered:
"She said Grandma knew everything.""
I looked toward Patricia.
"Did my mother tell you anything about Vanessa?""
Patricia hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"Your mother told me that Vanessa visited the house several times before you introduced her to the family.""
I stared at her.
"When?""
"About eleven years ago.""
I remembered meeting Vanessa at a charity dinner.
She had been charming, funny, and attentive.
She knew exactly what to say.
I had believed it was fate.
Patricia continued.
"Your mother said she was carrying documents for Richard.""
"What documents?""
"She didn't know. But she recognized the name on the envelope.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was sitting across the room, refusing to answer the officers' questions.
I walked toward her.
"How long have you known Richard?""
She looked up.
"That's none of your business.""
"Eleven years?""
Her expression changed.
"Who told you that?""
"My mother.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your mother has been confused for months.""
"She was clear enough to recognize you stealing her jewelry.""
Vanessa stood.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
"Did you marry me because of my family?""
She didn't answer.
"Did Richard arrange it?""
Her eyes flashed.
"Richard didn't arrange anything.""
"Then explain the payments.""
She stared at me.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said, "You should be grateful.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Grateful?""
"Your father was going to destroy everything. Richard saved the family.""
"My father was trying to stop a thief.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Your father was a stubborn old man who couldn't accept that his time was over.""
I stepped closer.
"Don't talk about him.""
"Why? Because you worship him?""
Her voice became cruel.
"He left Daniel with nothing. He left your mother with a broken company. And he left you believing you were the good son.""
I looked at her.
"Did you know about the money Dad left for Lily?""
She smirked.
"Of course.""
"Then why did you try to steal it?""
"Because it was being wasted.""
"On a twelve-year-old girl?""
"On a family that needed it!""
I shook my head.
"You're unbelievable.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You think you're innocent? Your father knew what Daniel was doing and protected him for years. He let the company rot because he couldn't admit his son was a failure.""
I looked toward the officers.
One of them was writing something down.
"Did Richard tell you to marry me?""
Vanessa remained silent.
I waited.
Finally, she whispered:
"Richard wanted someone inside the family.""
My stomach dropped.
"Someone who could access the estate.""
She looked away.
I stepped back.
Eleven years.
Eleven years of dinners, birthdays, Christmas mornings, school meetings, and family photographs.
How many of those moments had been real?
Then Vanessa said something that changed everything.
"You're acting as if I was the only one involved. Ask Daniel who introduced us.""
I froze.
"Daniel?""
She nodded.
"Your brother brought me to that charity dinner. He knew exactly who I was.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
It contained a photograph of Daniel standing beside Richard outside a courthouse.
The date was from eleven years earlier.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
*YOUR BROTHER DIDN'T JUST INTRODUCE YOU TO VANESSA. HE WAS PAID TO DO IT.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was watching me.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
Because whoever had sent that message knew something she didn't want anyone to discover.
And then another message arrived.
*ASK DANIEL WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FIRST FIANCÉE.*
I stopped breathing.
My first fiancée.
The woman I had planned to marry before Vanessa.
The woman who disappeared from my life after receiving a mysterious phone call.
May you like
Her name was Emily.
And I hadn't heard from her in eleven years.
