Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Under Noah’s Name
“Your wife’s doctor.””
Daniel’s words stayed in the room long after he stopped speaking.
I stared at him.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
Neither of them moved.
That was the moment I realized something terrifying.
They weren’t surprised.
They were waiting for me to understand.
“What doctor?”” I asked.
Daniel looked down.
“The one who handled Noah’s birth.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
The word came out before I even thought about it.
Because some part of me refused to accept what my mind was already putting together.
I grabbed the edge of Noah’s desk to steady myself.
“You’re telling me the doctor who delivered my son is involved in this?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Not just involved.””
He looked toward the hallway.
“He’s the reason your wife started investigating everything.””
I turned to Vanessa.
“Is this true?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
Not sadness.
Frustration.
“I was trying to stop this from happening.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She looked away.
“I knew there were questions.””
“Questions?””
I pointed toward Noah’s empty room.
“My son is missing.””
Her face tightened.
“And you think I don’t know that?””
“Then why did you hide everything from me?””
The silence that followed was almost unbearable.
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
“Because the last person who searched for the truth disappeared.””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“Don’t make yourself sound like a victim.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You weren’t there.””
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“But I know what happened.””
I looked between them.
“Someone needs to start talking.””
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.””
He walked toward the desk and picked up the note Noah left behind.
“He found the old records.””
“How?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She hesitated.
Then said:
“He found the drawer.””
My stomach tightened.
“The drawer in the kitchen?””
She nodded.
“Three weeks ago.””
I remembered.
Three weeks ago.
Noah had started acting differently.
He stopped asking questions.
He stopped leaving his toys around the house.
He started watching people instead of playing with them.
I thought it was a phase.
I thought he was just growing up.
I was wrong.
“What did he see?”” I asked.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“Everything.””
I looked at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small folded paper.
“I found this in his room.””
I took it from her.
It was a child’s handwriting.
Simple.
Uneven.
A list.
*Things I found:*
*1. My name was changed.*
*2. Dad doesn’t know.*
*3. Mom was scared.*
*4. Vanessa lied.*
I stopped reading.
The room became silent.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“My name was changed?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what your wife discovered.””
I turned.
“My wife?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before she died.””
The words hit me.
My wife.
The woman I had loved.
The woman I buried.
The woman I believed I understood.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Almost a year before her death.””
I felt anger rising.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Because the answer was painful.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked at Noah’s empty bed.
“Of losing you.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you know the full story.””
I turned away.
“I don’t want another half-truth.””
“You won’t get one.””
Daniel walked to the window.
“Your wife discovered irregularities in Noah’s medical records.””
I listened.
“The hospital records showed one blood type. The private documents showed another.””
My chest tightened.
“Blood type?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“And it didn’t match the father listed on the original records.””
I swallowed.
“You’re saying…”
Daniel nodded.
“Your wife thought Noah might not be biologically yours.””
The words hurt.
Even though I had heard them before.
Because this time they sounded real.
I looked around Noah’s room.
The posters on his wall.
The books stacked beside his bed.
The small basketball he always carried.
Nothing had changed.
Everything had changed.
“He’s my son.””
Nobody answered.
I turned sharply.
“He is my son.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
His voice softened.
“Marcus, being a father isn’t only about DNA.””
I looked away.
Because I knew that.
I knew it better than anyone.
But knowing something and feeling something were different.
I had spent nine years believing I knew the entire story of my child’s life.
Now I was finding out the foundation had cracks.
A sound came from downstairs.
A phone ringing.
All of us froze.
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“That’s mine.””
She ran downstairs.
Daniel and I followed.
Her phone sat on the kitchen counter.
The screen showed one word.
*UNKNOWN.*
She stared at it.
“Answer it,” I said.
She didn’t move.
“Vanessa.””
Slowly, she picked up.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
I couldn’t hear the words.
But I saw Vanessa’s expression change.
Her face lost all color.
“Where is he?””
A pause.
Then:
“No.””
Her hand began shaking.
“Don’t touch him.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Who is it?””
Vanessa ignored him.
“I told you he was just a child.””
Another pause.
Then her voice broke.
“You promised.””
I stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
She looked at me.
For a second, I thought she would.
Then she pulled it away.
The person on the other end said something.
Whatever it was made Vanessa close her eyes.
“Fine.””
She whispered.
“I’ll bring it.””
The call ended.
I stared at her.
“What did you just agree to?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“They have Noah.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“The people who know what Noah really is.””
My jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel grabbed Vanessa’s arm.
“Where?””
She pulled away.
“Let go of me.””
“Where are they taking him?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, I saw something real.
Not control.
Not manipulation.
Fear.
“They want the original file.””
“What file?””
She looked at the drawer.
“The one your wife hid before she died.””
My mind raced.
“The file that proves Noah’s identity?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“And you know where it is.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You know where my son is.””
“I know where they took him.””
“Then take me there.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“If you go, they’ll know you found out.””
I stared at her.
“My son is missing.””
“I know.””
“And you’re worried about them knowing?””
She looked at me.
“Marcus, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Her voice cracked.
“The people who took Noah aren’t trying to hurt him.””
I froze.
“What?””
“They’re trying to find out if he knows where the file is.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t know that.””
“I know exactly who they are.””
“You think you do.””
The two of them stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t just about Noah’s birth records.
This wasn’t just about my wife’s secrets.
There was a war happening.
And my son had been caught in the middle.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
Noah.
Sitting in a room.
Alive.
Scared.
But unharmed.
My breath left my body.
Then another message appeared.
*BRING THE FILE TO THE OLD HOSPITAL BEFORE MIDNIGHT.*
A second photo loaded.
This one wasn’t Noah.
It was a document.
The top line was visible.
*PATERNITY CONFIRMATION REPORT.*
And beneath it was a name.
The name of Noah’s biological father.
I stared at the screen.
Because I knew that name.
Everyone in our town knew that name.
And it was impossible.
The message continued.
*OR TELL YOUR SON WHY HIS REAL FATHER NEVER CAME BACK FOR HIM.*
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa was watching my face.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Neither answered.
I turned the phone around.
And when they saw the name on the document…
Vanessa whispered:
“No…”
Daniel stepped back.
May you like
Because the name on the report was the one person we all thought had been gone forever.
My own brother.
