Chapter 9: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
For a moment, Marcus thought he had heard wrong.
The street.
The cars.
The voices from nearby houses.
Everything disappeared.
Only one sentence remained.
“It was Coach Daniels.””
Marcus stared at Noah.
His son looked terrified.
Not because he had said the name.
Because he knew what that name meant to his father.
Coach Daniels wasn’t just a coach.
He wasn’t just the man who trained Noah.
He was the person Marcus had trusted with the most important thing in his life.
His son.
“Noah,” Marcus said slowly, “what exactly did he say to you?””
Noah looked down.
“He came to the gym after practice.””
Daniel immediately looked at Marcus.
“When?””
Noah answered.
“Two weeks ago.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
Two weeks.
The same time everything started changing.
The same time Noah became quieter.
The same time Daniel returned.
“Tell me everything.””
Noah glanced at Daniel.
Then Richard.
Then his father.
“I was leaving practice.””
His voice was quiet.
“Coach Daniels asked me to stay.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to talk.””
Noah twisted his fingers together.
“He asked if I knew anything about Uncle Daniel.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What did you say?””
“I said I didn’t know who he was.””
Noah paused.
“Then Coach showed me an old picture.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What picture?””
“A picture of Dad and Uncle Daniel.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“He had access to old files.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“That means he was involved earlier than we thought.””
Marcus looked back at Noah.
“What did Coach say?””
Noah swallowed.
“He said Uncle Daniel wasn’t a good person.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“What else?””
“He said some people come back because they want something.””
A pause.
“Then he said I should be careful.””
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“Careful of Daniel?””
Noah nodded.
“But then he said something else.””
Everyone waited.
Noah looked uncomfortable.
“He said…”
The boy stopped.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“What?””
“He said, ‘Your dad thinks he knows the truth, but he doesn’t even know who was really there for him.’”
Silence.
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard’s face had gone pale.
Because that sentence wasn’t random.
It was a clue.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
Richard looked away.
“Nothing.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“No more of that.””
Richard looked at him.
Marcus pointed toward the street.
“My entire life has been built on people telling me half the truth.””
His eyes moved between them.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
He took a breath.
“I’m done.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
Then he looked at Daniel.
“It’s time.””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“Time for what?””
Richard looked at Marcus.
“To tell him everything.””
They moved inside Marcus’s house.
For the first time in years, the place felt unfamiliar.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same photographs.
But Marcus felt like he was seeing his own life from the outside.
Noah sat on the couch.
Daniel sat across from him.
Richard placed the folder on the table.
Marcus remained standing.
He didn’t want comfort.
He wanted answers.
Richard opened the folder.
“Coach Daniels wasn’t always Coach Daniels.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Before he worked with children, he worked in business security.””
Marcus looked confused.
“And?””
“And he was hired by your company.””
The room became still.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“I knew his name.””
“Not that he was involved?””
“No.””
Richard continued.
“He was hired to investigate financial leaks.””
Marcus stared.
“By who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“By me.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“You hired him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought someone inside the company was stealing.””
Marcus shook his head.
“And then?””
Daniel looked down.
“Then he disappeared with the evidence.””
Marcus felt cold.
“Wait.””
He looked between them.
“Coach Daniels had the evidence?””
Richard nodded.
“The original documents.””
Marcus understood.
The forged contract.
The missing files.
The reason Daniel couldn’t prove anything.
Coach Daniels had taken the proof.
“But why?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Because he wasn’t investigating the theft.””
A pause.
“He was part of it.””
Marcus looked at Noah.
Then back at Daniel.
“How does he know Noah?””
Richard answered.
“Because he has been watching you.””
Marcus felt anger explode.
“Watching my son?””
Daniel stood.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“No one watches my son.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I know.””
For the first time, Marcus saw something in Daniel’s face.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not for himself.
For Noah.
“He didn’t come back because of you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“He came back because Noah found the box.””
Marcus froze.
The drawer.
The documents.
The moment everything started.
Noah had accidentally uncovered the past.
And someone had noticed.
“He knew Noah had seen the files,” Daniel continued.
Marcus looked sick.
“So he approached my son.””
“Yes.””
“To control the story.””
“Yes.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
All this time, he thought Noah had been caught between adults fighting over the past.
But Noah had been targeted because he discovered it.
A child.
His child.
Richard opened another document.
“This is the final piece.””
Marcus looked down.
It was a transfer record.
A payment.
A name.
Marcus read it.
Then stopped.
Because the name wasn’t Coach Daniels.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Richard.
It was someone else.
Someone connected to the beginning.
Someone Marcus had spent years mourning.
His father.
Marcus looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Your father knew.””
“Knew what?””
“The person behind everything.””
Marcus stared.
“My father knew who betrayed us?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Marcus already knew.
The person had power.
Money.
Connections.
And a reason to erase the truth.
Marcus looked at the document again.
The payment was made the day before his father died.
His hands started shaking.
“No.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“My father wasn’t involved.””
Richard looked down.
“We never said he was.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why is his name here?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence scared him more than anything.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Noah’s phone.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Don’t answer.””
But Noah had already looked at the message preview.
One sentence appeared.
A sentence that made his face lose color.
*I know your father is with you.*
Marcus took the phone.
Another message arrived.
*You have until midnight to give me the folder.*
Daniel looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Impossible.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the message.
“That number.””
“What about it?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“That number belonged to the person who was supposed to be dead.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at him.
And for the first time in eleven years, Marcus saw genuine fear in his brother’s eyes.
“Your father.””
The phone buzzed again.
A final message appeared.
*Ask Daniel what really happened the night Marcus’s father died.*
Marcus stared at the words.
Because suddenly the mystery wasn’t about who betrayed him.
It was about whether the person who raised him had been telling the truth at all.
And midnight was coming.
