Chapter 7: The Truth Nobody Wanted
The word hung in the air.
Yes.
One small word.
One answer.
But it carried years of betrayal.
Marcus stepped back.
I saw the hurt cross his face.
Not because Emma wasn’t his.
Because Vanessa had known something important about his daughter and chose silence.
“How long?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“How long did you know?””
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Since before you married Nia.””
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
Before we married.
Before Emma grew up.
Before all those family dinners.
Vanessa had carried this secret for years.
Marcus stared at her.
“You watched me raise her.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me love her.””
Tears formed in Vanessa’s eyes.
“Yes.””
“And you still said nothing?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t protect someone by stealing the truth from them.””
Arthur looked away.
Because he knew.
He had done the same.
Claire quietly picked up the photograph.
“There is something else.””
Nobody wanted to hear those words.
But everyone knew we had to.
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Claire handed him the photo.
“Your mother left this because she wanted Emma to know where she came from.””
Marcus looked at the back.
His eyes moved.
Then stopped.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Marcus turned the photograph around.
Written beneath the old message was a name.
A name that made Arthur’s face lose all color.
A name that made Vanessa whisper:
“No.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“Who is Daniel?””
Arthur didn’t move.
The silence answered before he did.
“Your brother.””
Marcus stared.
“I don’t have a brother.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“You did.””
The room froze.
I held Emma tighter.
Marcus’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Did?””
Arthur nodded.
“Daniel was born before you.””
Marcus looked confused.
“My parents had another child?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Arthur’s expression broke.
“Because he disappeared.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“And that’s the part nobody wants to talk about.””
Arthur looked at her.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No more hiding.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What happened to him?””
She looked at the envelope.
“He found out.””
“Found out what?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“That your family had been hiding something.””
Claire interrupted.
“Not just hiding.””
She looked at Arthur.
“Covering.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Arthur sat down slowly.
The strong, commanding man from earlier suddenly looked exhausted.
“I made mistakes.””
Marcus stared.
“What mistakes?””
Arthur looked at Emma.
“The kind that hurt people you love.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma quietly asked:
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
“Yes?””
“Why is everyone sad?””
My heart broke.
Because she was the only innocent person in the room.
I lifted her into my arms.
“Because grown-ups sometimes make mistakes.””
She thought about that.
Then whispered:
“Are we still family?””
The question destroyed every adult in the room.
Marcus immediately walked over.
He placed his hand on her back.
“Yes.””
His voice was firm.
“We are.””
He looked at everyone.
“No matter what.””
Vanessa looked away.
Because even she knew that was the truth.
Arthur opened the envelope again.
“There is one more page.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Arthur unfolded it.
His eyes scanned the words.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“This letter wasn’t only about Emma.””
A pause.
“It was about the person who caused all of this.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Marcus noticed.
“Who?””
Arthur slowly raised his eyes.
May you like
And looked directly at Vanessa.
“She named you.””
