Chapter 8: The Secret My Father Took To His Grave

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

The words coming through the phone didn’t make sense.

My father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed awake all night when I had the flu as a child.

The man who cried when I became a father.

He had chosen Vanessa.

He had brought her into my life.

Not to help me.

To watch me.

To collect evidence against me.

“Daniel?””

Rachel’s voice sounded far away.

“Say something.””

I looked around the room.

The laundry basket.

The folder.

The documents.

Everything that had once belonged to my ordinary life.

Now every object felt like evidence in a case against me.

“Why?””

My voice came out quietly.

“Why would he do that?””

Rachel sighed.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

A pause.

“Your father was worried after your divorce.””

I closed my eyes.

“My divorce was years ago.””

“I know.””

“He knew I became a single father.””

“Yes.””

“He knew how hard it was.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would he think I couldn’t handle it?””

Rachel was silent.

That silence hurt.

Because it meant she had an answer.

“Rachel.””

She finally spoke.

“Because he thought you were repeating his mistakes.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He saw himself in you.””

I leaned against the wall.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What mistakes?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your father was afraid you would become like him.””

I felt a strange emptiness.

All my life, I thought my father was the strongest person I knew.

Now I was hearing that he was afraid.

Afraid of me.

Afraid of himself.

“Rachel, what did he tell you?””

“He told me he was worried about your anger.””

I almost laughed.

“Again with the anger.””

“He said you carried pain differently than other people.””

“That doesn’t mean I’m dangerous.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know that now.””

I looked down.

“What changed?””

“Seeing what Vanessa did.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“She showed me the same things she showed everyone else.””

“Videos?””

“Yes.””

“Edited videos?””

Silence.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Another person manipulated.

Another person fooled.

But this time, it wasn’t enough to make me angry.

Because Rachel had been wrong.

And my children had paid the price.

“Where is my father now?””

The question came out before I thought about it.

Rachel didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

“Daniel…”

“Where is he?””

Her voice softened.

“He’s still in the hospital.””

I looked toward the front window.

The night outside felt endless.

“I need to talk to him.””

“I don’t know if he can.””

“I need to.””

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“He may not remember everything.””

My heart sank.

“Because of his condition?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the folder again.

The plan.

The signatures.

The lies.

“Or because he knows exactly what he did.””

Rachel didn’t respond.

That was the answer.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I stood there.

Then I walked upstairs.

Lily was awake.

Sitting on her bed.

Waiting.

“You heard?””

She nodded.

I sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because adults made mistakes.””

She looked at me carefully.

“Are you leaving?””

The question broke me.

“No.””

“Promise?””

I looked into my daughter’s eyes.

The same eyes that had looked at me while she was afraid to tell the truth.

“I promise I’m going to fight for you.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Was Grandpa mad at you?””

I froze.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because Vanessa said Grandpa knew.””

My chest tightened.

“What else did she say?””

Lily looked down.

“She said Grandpa was disappointed in you.””

I felt the pain before the anger.

Because that was exactly the weapon Vanessa would use.

My father’s approval.

The one thing I had spent my entire life trying to earn.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Grandpa loved me.””

“Yes.””

“He loved you too.””

Her eyes filled.

“Then why would he do this?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Not one that a child should hear.

So I just held her.

The next morning, I went to the hospital.

I didn’t tell anyone.

Not Vanessa.

Not Rachel.

Not Marcus.

I needed one conversation without someone controlling what I knew.

The hospital smelled like disinfectant and coffee.

Machines beeped softly.

People walked through the halls carrying their own stories.

I found my father’s room.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

That was the first thing that hurt.

My father had always seemed impossible to break.

But lying there, connected to machines, he looked human.

Fragile.

I stood at the doorway.

Then he opened his eyes.

“Daniel?””

His voice was weak.

I walked inside.

“Hey, Dad.””

A small smile appeared.

“You came.””

I pulled up a chair.

“Of course I came.””

He looked at me.

Then at my face.

Something changed.

“You know.””

I froze.

“What?””

His eyes moved away.

“You found out.””

My heart started pounding.

“You knew I would?””

He closed his eyes.

“I hoped you wouldn’t have to.””

I felt anger rise.

“You hoped I wouldn’t have to?””

He looked back at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stood.

“You brought Vanessa into my life.””

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Regret.

That hurt more.

“Dad.””

He looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By spying on me?””

“By saving you.””

“Saving me from what?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Yourself.””

The room felt cold.

I stepped back.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My father looked at me.

“Because everyone is afraid.””

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

His voice became emotional.

“Afraid you will carry the same pain I carried.””

I stared at him.

“What pain?””

He looked toward the window.

“When I was your age, I lost control.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“I scared your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother never told me that.””

“She protected me.””

The words were quiet.

“I was angry. I was stressed. I thought providing money was enough.””

He looked at me.

“But I wasn’t there emotionally.””

I swallowed.

“Dad.””

“I saw you making the same mistakes.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“You love your children. I know that.””

“Then why?””

“Because love doesn’t erase damage.””

The words hurt because they sounded like something a father would say.

But they didn’t explain Vanessa.

They didn’t explain the lies.

“You asked her to destroy my family.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Then what did you ask her to do?””

He looked away.

“I asked her to watch.””

“Watch?””

“To see if you were okay.””

I stared at him.

“And then?””

His silence answered.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

The anger in me weakened for one second.

Because he sounded broken.

Not guilty.

Broken.

Then he whispered:

“But Vanessa changed the plan.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

“She went further than I asked.””

“Meaning?””

“She was supposed to document your behavior.””

My stomach tightened.

“She was not supposed to hurt your children.””

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

“So you knew?””

His eyes opened.

“I found out too late.””

“When?””

“After Lily’s letter.””

I froze.

“You knew about the letter?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I tried.””

“Try harder.””

My voice shook.

“My daughter was scared.””

“I know.””

“My son was giving away food because he thought he had to protect his sister.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“And you sat there?””

“No.””

He reached for my hand.

“I confronted Vanessa.””

I pulled away.

“What did she say?””

My father looked terrified.

“She said it was already too late.””

A chill moved through me.

“Too late?””

He nodded.

“She said she had already found the person who could finish the plan.””

“Who?””

My father’s breathing became heavier.

I stood.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Who?””

His lips trembled.

Then he whispered:

“The person who has been controlling Vanessa from the beginning.””

I leaned closer.

“Who?””

My father closed his eyes.

And with the last bit of strength in his voice, he said:

“Someone in this hospital.””

I froze.

“What?””

His eyes opened again.

“Daniel…”

The heart monitor beeped faster.

“Someone who knows everything.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Who?””

He looked toward the door.

Fear crossed his face.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother.””

I turned.

The door behind me slowly opened.

And standing there was Evelyn Carter.

My mother.

Holding a folder.

May you like

And she said:

“Your father wasn’t supposed to tell you that.””
