Chapter 12: The Mother I Never Knew

I couldn't move.

The woman standing before me had been declared dead, hidden behind false records, and linked to a research program that had stolen our identities.

Now she was telling me she was my mother.

I looked at the DNA report again.

“That's impossible.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I know how it sounds.””

“My mother is Evelyn.””

“I know.””

“Then stop calling yourself my mother.””

The words came out harsher than I'd intended.

Eleanor flinched, but she didn't step away.

“I deserve that.””

“No. You deserve to explain.””

She glanced toward the police cars approaching the storage facility.

“We don't have much time.””

“Then start talking.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel and I were involved before he became seriously ill. We were young, and our family was falling apart. Richard had begun using the hospital to conduct unauthorized genetic research. Daniel discovered what he was doing and threatened to report him.””

I held the DNA report tightly.

“Why were you involved?””

“Because I was pregnant.””

“With me?””

She nodded.

“Daniel was your biological father. I was your biological mother. Richard knew the pregnancy could produce a child with the genetic marker he wanted to study.””

Claire stood beside me, silent and pale.

Eleanor continued.

“When I gave birth, Richard told me you had died. He showed me a document signed by a doctor. I was sedated, exhausted, and terrified. I believed him.””

“Then how did I survive?””

“Daniel found you in the neonatal unit two days later. He realized the death record was false. He took you to another hospital with Robert's help.””

I stared at her.

“Robert helped?””

“Yes. He knew Daniel had been your biological father, and he knew Evelyn was raising you as her own. He agreed to protect your identity because he believed Richard would never stop searching for you.””

“Then why did Richard declare me dead?””

“Because he wanted to erase your medical history. If you officially didn't exist, he could claim any research conducted on your blood samples had come from an unidentified patient.””

I felt sick.

“So my entire life was a cover story.””

“No,” Eleanor whispered.

“Your life was real. Your family was real. The people who loved you were real.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard threatened to kill Daniel if I exposed him. He told me that if I tried to reclaim you, he'd have you taken back into the research program.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him.””

“I had already lost you once. I couldn't risk losing you again.””

I wanted to understand.

I wanted to hate her.

Instead, I felt nothing but exhaustion.

“You could have found me when Richard died.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Six months ago. I contacted Robert's attorney. He told me your father had died without leaving instructions for how to reach you.””

“That isn't true. He left letters. He left recordings.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Richard intercepted them. He still had people working for him.””

A police officer approached us.

“Everyone needs to step away from the building.””

Eleanor nodded and turned back to me.

“I know you don't trust me. You shouldn't. But there's one more thing you need to know.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

She accepted the bitterness in my voice.

“The three babies born that night were not all part of the same experiment.””

I looked at Claire.

“What do you mean?””

“Claire was born to Evelyn and Robert. Victoria was born to me and Daniel. You were born to me and Daniel, too.””

Claire frowned.

“Then why were we all recorded as Evelyn's children?””

“Because Richard changed the records. He wanted to conceal Daniel's paternity and create a false medical history that connected all three girls to the same mother.””

I stared at her.

“But Victoria was born to you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say there were three babies born to Evelyn?””

“Because Richard falsified the records to make it appear that Evelyn had delivered all three. He wanted to track the genetic traits across the children without revealing the actual parentage.””

I felt a headache building behind my eyes.

“So Claire is my sister through Evelyn's family, and Victoria is my sister through Daniel and you.””

Eleanor nodded.

“And you are connected to both sides.””

I looked at Claire.

For thirty years, we'd lived separate lives, unaware of one another. Now we were discovering that the family tree we'd been given was almost entirely fabricated.

“What about Marcus?”” I asked.

Eleanor hesitated.

“Marcus is not biologically related to you.””

I closed my eyes in relief.

Then I remembered the marriage.

“That's supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Eleanor lowered her gaze.

“I know what he did to you. He should never have proposed while he was still married.””

“Why did he marry Victoria?””

“Because she wanted to discover her biological identity. Marcus thought marrying her would give him access to the Reed family records. He convinced himself he could help her while keeping his own secrets.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone in this family thinks manipulation is a form of love.””

Eleanor looked as if she'd been slapped.

“You're right.””

The police officers began escorting Richard from the storage facility. He was handcuffed, but he still carried himself like a man accustomed to giving orders.

As he passed us, he stopped.

“Nia.””

I refused to look at him.

“You think this is over?”” he asked.

“The records you found are incomplete. The DNA report doesn't prove what you think it proves.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Richard, stop.””

He ignored her.

“Ask Samuel what happened to the original samples. Ask him why he signed the reports. Ask him who approved the transfer.””

Dr. Samuel Whitmore, standing near the police cars, went pale.

I turned toward him.

“Did you help Richard?””

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer stunned me.

“You knew what he was doing?””

“I knew he was conducting unauthorized research. I didn't know the full extent of the transfers until years later.””

“But you signed the records.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He lowered his head.

“Because I was afraid of him.””

I stared at the man who had delivered me, altered my identity, and hidden the truth for decades.

“Fear doesn't erase responsibility.””

“No,” he whispered.

“It doesn't.””

The police led Richard away.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

But I didn't feel victorious.

I felt hollow.

Tessa came to stand beside me.

“We should go.””

I nodded.

Eleanor reached toward my hand, then stopped before touching me.

“Can I see you again?””

I looked at her.

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to tell her that thirty years of absence could not be repaired by a DNA report and an apology.

Instead, I said, “I don't know.””

She nodded through her tears.

“That's fair.””

We drove back to the city in silence.

At home, I placed the DNA report on the kitchen table beside the engagement ring Marcus had returned through Tessa.

I stared at the two objects.

One represented the future I'd thought I was building.

The other represented the past I'd never known.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Victoria.

I know what you've discovered. We need to talk.

A second message followed.

Marcus has been lying about more than our marriage.

Then a third.

It contained a photograph of Marcus standing beside Richard Whitmore outside the hospital.

The date was from three weeks ago.

I stared at the image.

Richard had supposedly been dead for three years.

But Marcus had been meeting him in secret.

My phone rang.

Victoria.

I answered.

“Tell me what you know.””

Her voice was trembling.

“Marcus didn't marry me to investigate my family. That was just the excuse he gave you.””

“Then why did he marry you?””

“Because Richard promised him something.””

“What?””

Victoria paused.

Then she whispered, “He promised Marcus that if he helped keep the third child's identity hidden, he'd give him control of the Whitmore medical empire.””

I felt cold all over.

“And did Marcus agree?””

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I found the contract.””

She took a shaky breath.

“And Nia, there's something else.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“Richard didn't choose Marcus because he trusted him.””

A pause.

“He chose him because Marcus was already hiding a secret of his own.””

I closed my eyes.

“What secret?””

Victoria's answer came quietly.

“Marcus has a daughter.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“She was born six months before our wedding. Her mother disappeared shortly afterward. Marcus told me the baby had died.””

My stomach dropped.

“Did she?””

“No.””

Victoria began crying.

“I found the child's birth certificate yesterday.””

She sent me a photograph.

The baby had been given a name.

A date of birth.

And a biological mother's name.

But beneath the mother's name, someone had written a note in red ink.

Identity protected by court order.

I stared at the document.

May you like

Then Victoria whispered the words that would change everything again.

“Nia, the mother of Marcus's daughter is Claire.””
