sad

Chapter 8: The Baby No One Knew About

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

They entered my mind as sounds, but they refused to become meaning.

*“Lily wasn’t the only baby in that hospital room.””*

I looked at Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

Then back at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel’s face had gone pale.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret so heavy that finally putting it down hurt more than holding it.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, don’t say my name like that.””

My voice cracked.

“I need you to answer the question.””

Rachel looked toward Lily.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“Years ago.””

I laughed quietly.

A bitter, empty sound.

“Everyone wanted to tell me something.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone had a reason to keep secrets.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt like an accusation.

I turned to Rachel.

“What happened in that hospital room?””

Rachel took a breath.

“Lily was born at 2:14 in the morning.””

I nodded.

I remembered.

Of course I remembered.

The day my daughter entered the world was the happiest day of my life.

Even now, years later, I could remember the smell of the hospital.

The sound of machines.

The way I held her tiny hand.

“I remember.””

Rachel nodded.

“But you don’t remember what happened before you arrived.””

I froze.

“What?””

Her eyes dropped.

“You were called because there was an emergency.””

My forehead tightened.

“Yes.””

“You were told Lily needed immediate care.””

“Yes.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“But that wasn’t the whole truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered:

“Tell him.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“There was another mother.””

The room became still.

“Another mother?””

Rachel nodded.

“She gave birth the same night.””

I stared.

“Okay.””

I didn’t understand.

“She had a baby girl.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“And that baby disappeared.””

My heart started pounding.

“What?””

Lily looked confused.

I immediately glanced at her.

“Sweetheart, go sit on the couch.””

She hesitated.

“I want to stay.””

I knelt beside her.

“I know.””

I touched her shoulder.

“But some things are adult things.””

She nodded reluctantly and moved away.

I turned back.

“Explain.””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“The other mother’s baby was sick.””

“How sick?””

“Very.””

“And what does this have to do with Lily?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed at her.

“You don’t get to say my name and avoid the answer.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The babies were switched.””

The words hit the room.

I stared.

“What?””

Rachel shook her head.

“Not at birth.””

“Then when?””

“Later.””

My mind raced.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

“Why?””

Rachel whispered:

“Because Marcus.””

The name alone changed the air.

“He was involved?””

Rachel nodded.

“He had connections at the hospital.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you?””

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

“I found out afterward.””

“After what?””

She swallowed.

“After the switch.””

My hands went cold.

“Are you saying Lily…”

“No.””

Rachel immediately shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Lily is your daughter.””

I exhaled.

But the relief lasted only a second.

“Then what switch?””

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

“Marcus wanted to use the other baby to create a legal claim.””

I stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“He wanted to make it look like there was a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

“A mistake that would put the hospital, the doctors, and everyone involved under investigation.””

I frowned.

“And how does that help him?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because he wanted money.””

The room went quiet.

“He wanted a settlement.””

My jaw tightened.

“So this was all about money?””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Rachel’s face broke.

“Lily became evidence.””

The word made me sick.

A child.

My child.

Evidence.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was afraid.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Fear explains one mistake.””

I pointed around the room.

“This is nine years of choices.””

Vanessa looked like she wanted to argue.

But she didn’t.

Because she knew.

She had no defense.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

“When Marcus realized Vanessa wasn’t helping him anymore…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He threatened her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said if I told anyone, he would expose everything.””

“Everything?””

“The fake documents.””

“The messages.””

“The custody papers.””

I looked at her.

“And you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“So you kept Lily.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

For once.

“I told myself I was protecting her.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

She didn’t fight.

She didn’t defend.

She simply accepted it.

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was holding the stuffed rabbit tightly.

“Am I the reason everyone is sad?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I immediately walked to her.

“Never.””

“But everyone keeps talking about me.””

I sat beside her.

“Because adults made mistakes.””

“Did I do something wrong?””

“No.””

I held her hands.

“You did nothing wrong.””

She looked at me.

“Promise?””

I nodded.

“Promise.””

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The secrets.

The lies.

The anger.

There was only my daughter.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The name on the screen appeared.

Marcus.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through.

“Daniel.””

My body went tense.

“You know who I am.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“You think this is about location?””

I said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“This is about truth.””

“You used my daughter.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“Your daughter was already part of something bigger.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

“I want what I was promised.””

“Money?””

“Justice.””

I almost laughed.

“Don’t use that word.””

A pause.

Then:

“You still believe Vanessa is the villain.””

I looked at her.

She looked away.

Marcus continued.

“She made mistakes.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“But she wasn’t the one who started it.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

Then:

“Ask Rachel.””

I looked at Rachel.

Her face changed.

“Why?””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Because she never told you why she was really at that hospital.””

Rachel whispered:

“Marcus, stop.””

My eyes widened.

He heard her.

“You’re there?””

No one answered.

His voice became colder.

“Daniel, ask her one question.””

I waited.

“Ask Rachel why she gave birth under a different name.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Rachel.

She closed her eyes.

“No.””

“Rachel?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why did he say that?””

Her silence was enough.

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at me.

And tears began falling.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“Of losing Lily before she was even born.””

The room went silent.

“What name?””

Rachel looked down.

“The name on my hospital records.””

I waited.

Then she said:

“The name Marcus knew.””

My stomach dropped.

“What name?””

Rachel looked at me.

And finally said:

“The name that connects Lily to the family Marcus was trying to hide.””

Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

A photograph.

I opened it.

It was an old hospital record.

The mother’s name was visible.

Not Rachel.

Not the name I knew.

A different name.

And underneath it was a note written by hand.

*“Subject: Baby transferred under false identity.””*

I looked up.

Rachel was crying.

Vanessa was frozen.

And upstairs, Lily’s bedroom door slowly opened by itself.

Someone was standing in the hallway.

Someone who had been listening.

A small voice whispered:

“Daddy…”

I turned.

Lily was holding another piece of paper.

Her face was terrified.

“I found this in my room.””

I walked toward her.

“What is it?””

She handed it to me.

On the front was one sentence.

May you like

Written in handwriting I didn’t recognize.

*“The truth about Lily begins with the child who was taken.””*
