Chapter 14: The Person Behind the Disappearance

Margaret asked Michael to lock the doors.

He checked the windows and pulled the curtains shut.

Arthur sat beside her, holding her hand as if he were afraid she might vanish again.

I remained standing.

"Mom, I need answers.""

She nodded.

"You deserve them.""

"Who ordered you to disappear?""

She looked at the envelope Michael had placed on the table.

"Thomas Whitaker.""

Richard's photograph came back to me.

The scratched-out face.

The man everyone believed had died in a plane crash.

"He's alive?""

Margaret nodded.

"He never died. The plane crash was arranged to give him a new identity.""

Michael opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements, photographs, and a collection of handwritten notes.

Margaret pointed to the documents.

"Thomas, Daniel, and Detective Reed were working together. They used the Carter Group to move money stolen from a federal infrastructure project.""

Richard had once told us the land contained evidence of a much bigger crime.

Now I understood why.

"The property?"" I asked.

"Was used as a storage site," Margaret said.

"The original records were hidden beneath an abandoned water facility on the eastern section of the land.""

Arthur leaned forward.

"That's why they wanted us to sell.""

"Yes. They needed the property transferred before anyone discovered what was buried there.""

Michael placed another document on the table.

"The money was moved through companies registered under false identities. One of those companies used my birth records.""

I examined the paperwork.

There were transfers dating back more than twenty years.

Millions of dollars had passed through accounts connected to the Carter Group.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"" I asked.

Margaret looked at me sadly.

"I did.""

She explained that she had taken the original evidence to Detective Reed. He had promised to protect her.

Instead, he warned Thomas.

The following evening, Margaret received a call from a man claiming to know where Marcus was.

She was told that if she didn't cooperate, I would be killed.

"That's when you disappeared?"" I asked.

She nodded.

"I believed the only way to keep you alive was to make them think I was dead.""

I looked at Arthur.

"And you knew?""

"Not at first," he said.

"I thought she had died. Six months later, I received a message proving she was alive.""

"Why didn't you bring her home?""

"Because the threat was real. They had photographs of you at school. They knew your routine. They knew where you slept.""

Margaret reached for my hand.

"I wanted to come back every day.""

I swallowed.

"You missed everything.""

"I know.""

"Graduation. My first job. My wedding.""

Her eyes filled.

"I know, sweetheart.""

I looked away.

I wanted to forgive her.

But forgiveness wasn't something I could simply produce because the person in front of me was dying.

Michael interrupted gently.

"We still haven't found Thomas.""

Margaret nodded.

"He's been watching the property. He knows the original evidence is still there.""

I examined the documents.

One page contained a list of names.

At the bottom was an unfamiliar signature.

*Evelyn Carter.*

I looked up.

"Why is Nia's mother on this list?""

Margaret's expression tightened.

"Because Evelyn was the person who gave Thomas the original property access codes.""

Michael shook his head.

"She was threatened.""

"She was also paid," Margaret replied.

I felt my stomach turn.

"Are you saying Evelyn helped them?""

"She made a mistake," Margaret said.

"But she tried to correct it. That's why she came to the wedding.""

I remembered Evelyn's terrified expression.

Her warning.

Her disappearance.

"Where is she now?""

Margaret looked at Michael.

He reached into his jacket and removed a small phone.

"She contacted me this morning.""

He played a voice message.

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

"Michael, if you receive this, tell Marcus that I'm sorry. I have the original access key. Thomas is coming for it. I won't let him destroy what Margaret protected.""

The message ended with a sharp noise.

Then silence.

Nia wasn't there to hear it.

I called her immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

"Marcus?""

"Where are you?""

"At the hotel. The police are here.""

"Your mother left a message. She has the original access key.""

Nia went quiet.

"Where is she?""

"We don't know.""

"Then I'm coming.""

I told her not to leave the hotel.

She refused.

Twenty minutes later, headlights appeared outside the farmhouse.

Michael went to the window.

"Someone's here.""

Arthur stood.

"Is it the police?""

Michael shook his head.

A black sedan stopped near the gate.

The driver's door opened.

Richard stepped out.

I stared.

"How did he find us?""

Michael's expression hardened.

"Because someone told him.""

Richard knocked.

Arthur moved toward the door, but Margaret grabbed his wrist.

"Don't open it.""

Richard knocked again.

"Marcus! It's Richard. We need to talk.""

I approached the window.

He held up both hands.

"I know where Evelyn is.""

Michael looked at me.

"Don't trust him.""

Richard raised his voice.

"Thomas has her. He's taking her to the Bennett property tonight.""

I turned toward Margaret.

She was suddenly struggling to breathe.

"Mom?""

She gripped my hand.

"He's going to destroy the evidence.""

Richard knocked again.

"Marcus, listen to me. I can get you inside.""

I opened the door but kept the chain fastened.

"How do we know this isn't another lie?""

Richard looked exhausted.

"Because I have the original recording.""

He held up a small device.

"The one Margaret made before the accident. The recording that proves who ordered it.""

Margaret slowly stood.

"Richard?""

He nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

She stared at him.

"You were supposed to protect the evidence.""

"I did.""

"Then why did you let them take Evelyn?""

Richard looked down.

"Because I thought I could use her to get Thomas.""

Michael stepped forward.

"You used her as bait?""

Richard didn't answer.

I slammed the door.

"Get away from here.""

Then Margaret spoke from behind me.

"Let him in.""

I turned.

"Mom, no.""

She looked at Richard.

"Play the recording.""

He entered.

We gathered around the table.

Richard pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice emerged.

Daniel Carter.

"If Margaret won't cooperate, make the accident happen. Arthur will take the blame, and the boy will never know.""

A second voice answered.

Detective Reed.

"What about the other child?""

Daniel replied.

"Keep him hidden. The boy is insurance.""

Then a third voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

Richard's.

"Understood.""

I stared at him.

He looked down.

The recording continued.

Daniel spoke again.

"And when the time comes, the person who has been closest to Marcus will bring us the property.""

My stomach tightened.

Nia.

Richard stopped the recording.

"That's why I approached you at the wedding," he said.

"I knew Thomas was waiting for the trust to be challenged. I needed you to open the investigation.""

I shook my head.

"You knew all along.""

"I knew pieces.""

"And you let us believe you were helping.""

"I was trying to.""

Margaret reached for the recorder.

"There's another part.""

Richard hesitated.

Then he played the final section.

Daniel's voice returned.

"Thomas, make sure Arthur never discovers who signed the original transfer.""

A pause.

Then Thomas Whitaker spoke.

"Don't worry. Arthur signed it himself.""

My father went pale.

"That's impossible.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Arthur, remember the night I asked you to sign the hospital consent form?""

He nodded slowly.

"That wasn't a hospital form," she whispered.

"It was a power of attorney. They switched the papers while you were frightened and exhausted.""

My father sank into his chair.

Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then he looked at me.

"Thomas has taken Evelyn to the water facility.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"Then we're going there.""

Margaret stood.

"No.""

"Mom—"

She caught my arm.

"Marcus, listen to me. Thomas isn't going to negotiate. He knows the evidence can put him away for the rest of his life.""

She looked at Arthur.

Then at Michael.

"There's something else buried beneath that facility.""

"What?"" I asked.

Margaret's voice dropped.

"The original death certificate.""

I stared at her.

"Whose?""

She looked at me.

"Daniel Carter's.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Nia.

*I'm at the property. Thomas says he'll trade my mother for the original trust. Come alone.*

May you like

A second message arrived.

*Marcus, please hurry. He's armed.*
