Chapter 3: The Files That Could Destroy an Empire

The morning after Blake’s wedding fell apart, I woke up expecting to feel regret.

Instead, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Peace.

Not because my life was suddenly fixed.

Not because the people who hurt me had apologized.

But because, for the first time in decades, I stopped carrying the weight of a secret that had been crushing my shoulders.

I sat at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee growing cold in front of me and stared at the sunlight coming through the window.

This was the same kitchen where Angela and I used to sit every Sunday morning.

The same table where we planned our future.

The same place where she once told me, “Tommy, one day you’re going to have to stop fighting battles alone.””

I smiled sadly.

She knew me better than anyone.

Even after she was gone, she was still right.

A knock came at the door.

I already knew who it was.

Blake.

My son walked in carrying two coffees.

He didn’t say hello right away.

He just sat across from me.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at me and shook his head.

“I still can’t believe it.””

I knew exactly what he meant.

Not the canceled wedding.

Not the embarrassment.

The betrayal.

“The woman I was about to marry knew,” he said quietly.

I looked down.

“We don’t know everything yet.””

“But she knew enough.””

His voice cracked.

“She knew my grandmother’s company was built on your work. She knew what her family did. Maybe not every detail, but enough.””

I wanted to defend Fiona.

Not because she deserved it.

Because I had spent my whole life trying to see the good in people.

But I couldn’t lie to my son.

“She made a choice,” I said.

Blake nodded.

“That’s what hurts.””

He leaned back.

“I could have forgiven her for not knowing. I could have forgiven her for being scared. But she stood there while they laughed at you.””

I looked at my son.

There was pain in his eyes.

The same pain I felt when I lost Angela.

The pain of realizing the person you trusted wasn’t who you thought they were.

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Marcus Hill.

I picked up.

“Thomas, we need to meet.””

“Today?””

“Yes.””

The seriousness in his voice told me this wasn’t just about old paperwork anymore.

“What happened?””

“We found more.””

Two hours later, Blake and I sat inside Marcus’s office.

The walls were covered with legal awards and framed newspaper articles.

I had never cared about recognition.

But seeing those articles reminded me how easily history could be rewritten.

Marcus placed a large file on the table.

“Your former partner wasn’t just stealing your shares.””

He opened the folder.

“He was draining the company.””

Blake frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus turned the documents toward us.

“Over the last eight years, millions of dollars disappeared through shell companies.””

I studied the pages.

Fake vendors.

False construction contracts.

Payments approved by executives who never existed.

My stomach tightened.

George wasn’t just a thief.

He was destroying everything we built.

“What about Leonard?”” I asked.

Marcus sighed.

“He was the architect.””

The attorney who helped steal my company had been hiding behind paperwork for years.

Marcus continued.

“He created the fake ownership transfers. He created the fake signatures. He also helped move the money.””

Blake looked shocked.

“Why would they do this?””

I knew the answer.

Greed.

But Marcus had something else.

“They were preparing for a collapse.””

He slid another document across the table.

“Three months ago, they started transferring assets overseas.””

I stared at him.

“They were planning to run.””

Marcus nodded.

“They knew someone might eventually challenge them.””

My voting share.

The one piece of power they couldn’t take.

Blake looked at me.

“So the wedding…”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me everything.

“The wedding was not random,” he finally said.

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“What are you saying?””

“We believe Beverly planned the public humiliation.””

Blake stood up.

“What?””

Marcus held up his hand.

“Let me finish.””

He pointed to the documents.

“They knew you would be angry. They knew you had pride. They wanted you to react publicly.””

I stared at him.

“They wanted me to lose control.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“They needed witnesses who would say you became aggressive or unstable. They wanted to damage your credibility before you challenged ownership.””

My hands tightened around the coffee cup.

All those people watching.

All those cameras.

All those whispers.

It wasn’t just cruelty.

It was a trap.

Beverly didn’t insult me because she looked down on me.

She insulted me because she needed me to look like someone who didn’t deserve to be believed.

Blake looked sick.

“My wedding was a setup.””

I reached over and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Son.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“They used my wedding.””

He looked away.

“They used me.””

I knew that pain.

The pain of realizing people you love were only seeing you as a tool.

Marcus closed the folder.

“We need to move carefully.””

“What happens now?”” Blake asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“Now, we gather everything.””

For the first time in many years, I felt something I thought I had buried.

Fight.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Justice.

Because this wasn’t about getting rich again.

It wasn’t about proving I was smarter than George.

It was about making sure nobody else who built that company with their hands got erased the way I was.

But before we left, Marcus stopped me.

“One more thing.””

I turned.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Fiona contacted me.””

Blake froze.

“What did she say?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“She wants to talk.””

The old version of me would have said no.

The old version of me would have shut the door forever.

But life had taught me something.

Sometimes the truth comes from unexpected places.

“Tell her,” I said.

Marcus waited.

“What?””

I looked toward my son.

“Tell her we’ll meet.””

Blake looked surprised.

“Dad?””

I nodded.

“Because if she knows something, we need to hear it.””

May you like

And deep down, I wondered whether Fiona was coming to apologize.

Or whether she was coming because her family had finally started falling apart.
