Chapter 7: The Basement
The message remained on Andre’s screen.
*YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHO OPENED THE CAR DOOR.*
Kiara read it twice.
Then she looked at Rochelle.
“Who opened the car door?””
Rochelle’s face had gone completely still.
“I don’t know.””
Kiara shook her head.
“You do.””
“No.””
“You said you heard Marcus arguing with someone.””
“I never saw them.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Rochelle looked away.
Darnell stepped between them.
“Enough. We're going to the house.””
Kiara grabbed his arm.
“No. We're going together.””
Darnell looked at her.
“Kiara—”
“If there's a safe down there, I want to see it.””
Andre nodded.
“I’m coming too.””
Rochelle's voice cracked.
“Please don't.””
Kiara turned.
“Why?””
Rochelle didn't answer.
“Mom, if you know something, this is your last chance to tell me.””
Rochelle stared at her daughter.
Then she whispered, “I was at the house that night.””
Darnell froze.
“What?””
“I went there.””
“When?””
“Before Marcus left.””
Darnell stepped closer.
“You told me you were home.””
“I lied.””
Kiara's eyes widened.
“What happened?””
Rochelle shook her head.
“I can't explain it here.””
“Then explain it somewhere else.””
Rochelle looked toward the road.
“Take me with you.””
They left the celebration together.
No one spoke as they walked.
The bright decorations disappeared behind them, but the sound of balloons snapping softly in the wind followed for several seconds.
Darnell led them toward an older section of town.
They stopped in front of an empty lot surrounded by weeds and a rusted chain-link fence.
Kiara looked around.
“There's nothing here.””
Darnell pointed toward a concrete structure half-hidden beneath overgrown vines.
“The basement.””
They climbed down a narrow set of cracked steps.
Darnell pulled the brass key from his pocket.
The basement door was rusted.
He inserted the key.
It turned.
The lock clicked.
Kiara's breath caught.
Darnell pushed the door open.
Dust rolled through the narrow beam of sunlight behind them.
Inside were old wooden shelves, broken furniture, and cardboard boxes covered in grime.
Andre switched on his phone flashlight.
“Where?””
Darnell pointed toward the back wall.
“There.””
A steel safe was built into the concrete.
Kiara stepped closer.
On the front was a faded name.
*M. REED.*
Her hand rose toward it.
Rochelle grabbed her wrist.
“Don't.””
Kiara pulled free.
“You've been afraid of this for twenty-three years.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rochelle stared at the safe.
“Because Marcus told me what was inside.””
Darnell turned sharply.
“You knew about the safe?””
Rochelle nodded.
“What did he put in it?””
“A letter.””
Kiara's heart hammered.
“My letter?””
“I don't know.””
Darnell inserted the key.
It fit.
But before he turned it, Rochelle whispered, “There was something else.””
Darnell stopped.
“What?””
“A second key.””
Kiara looked at her.
“Where?””
Rochelle swallowed.
“Marcus gave it to someone else.””
Andre's eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Rochelle looked at Darnell.
Then at Kiara.
“I don't know.””
Darnell turned the key.
The safe clicked.
The door opened two inches.
A smell of old paper and metal escaped.
Kiara stepped forward.
Inside was a small black box.
Beside it sat a sealed envelope.
Kiara reached for the envelope.
Her name was written across it.
*KIARA.*
Her fingers trembled.
Darnell whispered, “Open it.””
Kiara tore it open.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
She read the first line.
Then her face changed.
“What does it say?”” Andre asked.
Kiara couldn't speak.
She handed him the paper.
Andre read it.
His expression collapsed.
Darnell took it next.
His hands began shaking.
Rochelle backed toward the wall.
“What does it say?”” she whispered.
Darnell looked at her.
“It says Marcus knew I wasn't Kiara's father.””
Rochelle closed her eyes.
Kiara stared at her.
“Then why did he leave this for me?””
Rochelle shook her head.
“He didn't.””
Kiara frowned.
“What?””
Rochelle looked at the handwriting.
“That isn't Marcus's handwriting.””
Everyone froze.
Andre looked down at the letter.
“Then whose is it?””
May you like
Rochelle whispered a name.
“Darnell's.””
