Chapter 9: The Father Who Owned the Town
The emergency lights flickered on.
A soft red glow filled the hospital room.
My mother gripped my hand so tightly that her fingernails pressed into my skin.
I leaned toward her.
"Mom, we need to leave.""
She shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
Her eyes moved toward the door.
"Robert doesn't come here to negotiate.""
Trevor drew his weapon.
"Stay behind me.""
A slow series of footsteps echoed from the hallway.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a man's voice.
"Elizabeth, darling. I know you're awake.""
My mother began trembling.
Trevor stepped into the doorway.
"Keep walking, Dad.""
The footsteps stopped.
A chuckle followed.
"Trevor. My favorite disappointment.""
Trevor's jaw tightened.
"You're not coming in.""
"Move.""
"No.""
The silence that followed was almost unbearable.
Then Robert spoke again.
"You really think your sister will forgive you?""
I looked at Trevor.
His face was pale.
Robert continued.
"Tell her what happened on the night she was born.""
Trevor didn't answer.
My mother closed her eyes.
"Don't listen to him.""
But Robert wasn't finished.
"Tell her how you held her in your arms, Trevor. Tell her how you gave her to me.""
I stared at my brother.
"What is he talking about?""
Trevor looked at me.
"I was a baby.""
Robert laughed.
"Not that part.""
He stepped into the doorway.
I saw him for the first time.
He was older than the man in the photographs, but he carried himself with the same authority.
A dark suit.
Polished shoes.
A silver watch.
His hair was gray, but his eyes were exactly like mine.
He looked at me as if he were inspecting something he had purchased years ago.
"Kendra.""
I raised my weapon.
"Don't move.""
He glanced at it.
"Your mother taught you to do that?""
"She taught me to defend myself.""
"She always did have a dramatic imagination.""
He looked toward Trevor.
"Put your weapon down, son.""
Trevor didn't move.
Robert sighed.
"Must I remind you what happens when you disappoint me?""
Trevor's hand tightened around the gun.
"No.""
Robert turned toward me.
"Then perhaps I should explain.""
He walked slowly into the room.
I kept my weapon trained on his chest.
"Stay where you are.""
He stopped.
"Your mother was a prosecutor. She believed every person deserved justice. Unfortunately, she made the mistake of applying that belief to people who understood how the world really worked.""
"What did you do to Rebecca Shaw?""
His expression remained calm.
"Rebecca was a problem.""
"Emily?""
"Another problem.""
"Jonah Price?""
He smiled.
"People disappear for many reasons, Kendra.""
I felt sick.
"You're admitting it?""
"I'm admitting that some people are too dangerous to remain in positions where they can damage others.""
Trevor stepped forward.
"You're finished.""
Robert looked at him.
"Are you certain?""
He raised one hand.
Two security officers entered behind him.
Both carried weapons.
Daniel appeared at the far end of the corridor.
"FBI! Drop your weapons!""
The officers turned.
Gunfire erupted.
Trevor pulled me down.
My mother screamed.
Daniel fired twice.
One officer fell behind a medical cart.
The other retreated into the corridor.
Robert disappeared through the doorway.
I scrambled to my feet.
"He's getting away!""
Trevor grabbed my arm.
"Don't chase him!""
"He's right there!""
"That's what he wants!""
I pushed past him.
The hallway was empty.
A service elevator stood open at the end.
I ran toward it.
The doors began closing.
I caught a glimpse of Robert inside.
He looked directly at me.
Then he smiled.
And raised two fingers in a small farewell.
The doors shut.
I slammed my palm against the elevator.
"NO!""
Daniel reached me.
"He's gone.""
I turned toward him.
"How?""
"There's a second exit through the loading dock.""
I looked back at Trevor.
He was standing beside our mother.
His weapon was lowered.
His face was full of shame.
I returned to the room.
"Why did he say you gave me to him?""
Trevor looked at our mother.
She nodded weakly.
"Tell her.""
Trevor swallowed.
"After we were born, Robert took me out of the hospital. He told me I was being transferred to another room because you were sick.""
I stared at him.
"You were a newborn.""
"I know.""
He continued.
"When I was older, he told me I had a sister. He showed me photographs of you. He said your mother had abandoned us both.""
My mother began crying.
"He told me you were dead," she whispered.
Trevor looked at her.
"I believed him.""
I felt a strange emptiness.
Our entire family had been divided by lies.
Then Daniel approached us with a small tablet.
"There's something you need to see.""
He showed me a security recording from the hospital.
It showed Robert entering the building through the loading dock.
He was carrying a briefcase.
Behind him walked Chief Brennan.
I leaned closer.
"Pause that.""
Daniel stopped the footage.
Brennan's face was clear.
But it wasn't him that caught my attention.
A third person stood behind them.
A woman.
She wore a dark coat and carried a clipboard.
I recognized her immediately.
Margaret Grant.
Daniel's mother.
I looked at Daniel.
"Your mother came with them?""
He shook his head.
"That's impossible. She was with us.""
I turned toward the hospital bed.
Margaret was gone.
The room was empty.
Her coat had disappeared from the chair.
A nurse stood in the doorway.
"Excuse me, Agent Hayes?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
The nurse looked frightened.
"An older woman just left through the east entrance.""
"Did she say where she was going?""
The nurse shook her head.
"She gave me this.""
She handed me a folded note.
I opened it.
The handwriting was neat and familiar.
Daniel, forgive me.
I didn't tell you everything because I was afraid you'd hate me.
Robert Rock isn't the only person who knows where Rebecca Shaw is.
Your father is alive too.
Daniel staggered backward.
I read the next line.
And he's the man who has been helping Robert.
Daniel's face crumpled.
"My father?""
The nurse nodded toward the corridor.
"She also said something else.""
I looked up.
"What?""
The nurse swallowed.
"She said the Director was waiting at the courthouse.""
Daniel took the note from my hand.
At the bottom was a final sentence.
If you want the original list of everyone involved in Operation Silent House, come alone.
I looked at the clock.
7:42 a.m.
My mother was still recovering.
Emily was missing from the hospital.
Margaret had vanished.
And Robert Rock was somewhere in Ashborne.
I turned toward Trevor.
"We're going to the courthouse.""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"That's where the evidence is.""
"It's a trap.""
"Then we'll walk into it prepared.""
Trevor looked at me.
"You don't understand. The Director isn't Robert.""
I froze.
"What?""
Trevor glanced toward Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Robert takes orders from someone else.""
The room went silent.
I slowly lowered the note.
"Who?""
Trevor's voice was barely audible.
"The man who taught Robert Rock everything he knows.""
He looked at Daniel.
"Your father.""
Daniel's knees nearly buckled.
Then Trevor added one final sentence.
"His name is Thomas Grant. And he's been dead for eight years.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One photograph.
Margaret Grant sitting in the back of a car.
A man's hand resting on her shoulder.
The message beneath it read:
*THE DIRECTOR REQUESTS THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY. COURTHOUSE. NOON.*
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the photograph.
And then, with a voice barely above a whisper, he said:
May you like
"That's my father.""
The next three chapters can continue with the courthouse confrontation, the discovery of the original Silent House ledger, and the shocking truth behind Thomas Grant's supposed death.
