Chapter 4: The Price of Silence

The first time Andre tried to buy our silence, he came alone.

The second time, he brought a lawyer.

The third time, he brought a threat.

That was when I understood something about him.

Andre Walker didn’t want Nia.

Not really.

He wanted control.

Control over Simone.

Control over the story.

Control over anyone who made him feel powerless.

His attorney contacted us with a settlement offer.

The number was insulting.

Not because it was small.

Because it proved exactly what Andre thought.

That everything had a price.

“He wants five million dollars?”” Simone asked.

We were sitting in my office reviewing the proposal.

Lena nodded.

“He will give up his custody claim if you pay him.””

Simone laughed.

A painful laugh.

“He abandoned his daughter.””

“Yes.””

“He left us with debt.””

“Yes.””

“And now he wants money to disappear?””

“That’s what he’s asking.””

Simone looked at the papers.

Then she slowly tore them in half.

“I’m not paying him.””

I looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

She nodded.

For the first time since I met her, I saw no fear.

Only anger.

Not the kind that destroys.

The kind that finally wakes someone up.

“He took years from me,” she said.

“He doesn’t get to take my future too.””

That was the moment I realized something.

Simone wasn’t becoming stronger because of me.

She was remembering that she always had strength.

I just happened to be there when she found it again.

Over the next few weeks, we built our case.

And the more we uncovered, the worse Andre looked.

He had used Simone’s information to open accounts.

He had hidden income during their marriage.

He had threatened former employees who questioned him.

But the biggest discovery came from an old phone recording.

A former business partner had saved a conversation with Andre after a failed investment.

Andre’s voice was clear.

“I’ll use Simone’s name. She won’t fight back.””

I replayed that sentence three times.

Simone sat beside me.

Her eyes closed.

“He really thought I was nothing.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She opened her eyes.

“He thought you were someone he could control.””

That difference mattered.

Because people who control others are terrified when control disappears.

The court hearing arrived.

Andre entered wearing an expensive suit and a confident smile.

He looked like a man who had already won.

Until he saw Simone.

She wasn’t hiding.

She wasn’t crying.

She was sitting straight.

Ready.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Andre’s lawyer argued that he deserved a relationship with his daughter.

And that part was complicated.

Because despite everything, Nia loved her father.

Children often love people who hurt them.

Not because they’re foolish.

Because children believe love can fix things.

But adults know better.

When Andre took the stand, he performed perfectly.

He apologized.

He talked about mistakes.

He talked about wanting to be a father.

Then the recordings were played.

The room changed.

His carefully built image cracked.

The judge listened.

Everyone listened.

Then Lena presented financial records.

Bank transfers.

Fraudulent accounts.

Messages.

Proof.

Andre’s face slowly changed from confidence to panic.

After hours of testimony, the judge made the decision.

Andre would not receive custody.

His visitation rights would be heavily restricted pending further investigation.

The room was silent.

Then Nia ran to Simone.

“Mama.””

Simone hugged her.

And for a moment, everything felt over.

But I knew better.

People like Andre didn’t accept losing.

Outside the courthouse, he stopped me.

“You think you won?””

I turned.

He stepped closer.

“You bought her loyalty.””

I stared at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That nobody here belongs to me.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Everybody has a price.””

“No.””

I looked back at Simone and Nia.

“Some people are priceless.””

Andre walked away.

But before he reached his car, he looked back.

And I saw something dangerous.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

A decision.

That night, Simone called me.

“Darius?””

“Yes?””

“I’m scared.””

I sat up immediately.

“What happened?””

“I don’t know.””

Her voice shook.

“But I feel like this isn’t over.””

She was right.

Because while we were celebrating a victory, Andre was making another move.

And this time, he wasn’t just coming after Simone.

May you like

He was coming after the one person who could destroy him completely.

Nia.
